1 Introduction
Use
The DiaSys program is required to communicate with various MTU controllers, RCS-5 remote
control systems and MCS-5 monitoring systems.
The main functions of the DiaSys program are:
• data interchange with the central database
• adjusting the controller parameters
• data recorder function
Note: For the most part, this manual contains information concerning the use of DiaSys together
with governors. The functions described presuppose a hardware key level 1B (service/distributor).
Menu screen functions are not described in this manual.
Neither the requirements of DiaSys software on the hardware (PC) nor the installation of
this software is described in this document.
Online mode The serial or the CAN interface of the PC is connected to the controller and the
data connection to the controller is established.
Refer to the figure below (online mode)
Offline mode 1. The controller is not connected to the serial or CAN interface of the PC. The
data connection to the controller has been disconnected (office mode).
Refer to the figure below (offline mode)
2. The controller is connected to the serial or CAN interface of the PC. The data
connection to the controller has been disconnected (programming mode).
Engine parameter set (MPS) These are operating parameters of the governor.
Local database Files or databases that are stored locally on the PC for an engine number. The
data can be determined for the controller or for the central database.
Central database For each engine number, the data (FSW and MPS) is stored centrally in a
database in Friedrichshafen, Germany. Other identical designation: controller
database.

Hardware key
The hardware key
• contains a range of owner-specific information (refer to chapter “Hardware Key Info”).
• has a period of validity. Three months before expiration of the validity, a message is issued
to the user every time the DiaSys program is started.
Here, the adapter must be marked and the “Default HW” button clicked.
If DiaSys does not detect the adapter then the process must be repeated.
Key combinations

2 First steps
2.1 Preparations
Type of activity
Selection of the type of activity (activity group). Depending on the level of the hardware
plugged-in, the number of selectable user groups can be increased or decreased. The functions
offered by DiaSys depend on the user group selected
The following describes those functions available when selecting the “product support” user group. Only
a limited number of functions are available in the “customer” user group.
Using the small buttons“ ”, a graphical representation of the appropriate device or the system
can be called up in each case in order to facilitate identification.
The screen once more vanishes when the mouse pointer is moved away from the figure or
if you press the “ESC” button on the keyboard.
Note:
• depending on the device type, various functions may be available in DiaSys.
TIM ID: 0000022788 – 001
The selection shown for the functions in the “Device description” window can vary
depending on the controller connected.
Options X X X X X X X X X
X = function available
— = function not available
After clicking on the “New” button, the following window appears (see fig.) for inputting an engine number.
Note:
• Every order number must be linked to at least one engine number.
The “Available functions” window can only be accessed via this function and the “Open device
description” function (see chapter “DiaSys used with governors”).
After clicking on the “Delete” button, the following confirmation prompt will appear:
Note:
• In this way an entire order (i.e. the entire plant) including all of the data transferred
from the controller to the PC will be deleted.
To remove individual engine numbers, proceed as follows. Engine parameter records in
the local database will not be removed.
After clicking on the “Edit” button, the following window appears:
TIM ID: 0000022822 – 001
In this window you can either create or delete a new engine number within an order.
After clicking on the “OK” button the window will close.
• As soon as a connection is made to the central database and “ECU-7” is selected, the most current
version of “ECU7info” file will be automatically transferred to the PC if necessary.
Attention: Every time a connection is made to the central database, “Load controller” and “Delete and reload
controller” actions made with the ECU-7 controller will be reported back to the central database. Only the
actions are reported, the transfer of data - as usual - must be made by the user.
There are two different types of data records in the local database:
For controller These are the data that originate from the central database and are for the
(Data for controller) controller.
Actual data Here is where the current controller data are stored. Every changed to the
(Data from controller) controller is recorded. When transferring back the data record to the central
database, it is the “ActuaI data” that are transferred and then deleted from the
local database.
TIM ID: 0000022822 – 001
There can be two data records per engine number in the central database:
Last actual data from The “Actual data from last transfer” are the data that have been read out of the
controller (actual data from controller. They will only match the current actual data record of the controller if
last transfer) they have been consistently transferred back into the central database.
TIM ID: 0000022822 – 001
Several engine data records can be transferred back to the central database. Mark the corresponding
box in the “Transfer” field for the engine numbers.
The “Next” button takes you directly to the “Retrieve parameter record from central database” window.
Only the actual data from the controller can be transferred to the central database. Clicking
on the “Transfer” button starts the data transfer.
Notes:
• When using a modem the user must connect to the central database via the MTU IT Service
Directory. DiaSys will then be started and the data exchange can be prepared with the
“Establish connection to central database” function.
• If an engine data record is transferred via modem or LAN to the central database, it will be
automatically deleted in the local database after the transfer in finished.
• The “Transfer data using files” function does not delete the engine data record in the local
database when “Export data” is used. After successful transfer of data, the user must delete the
data with the “Edit engine data in the local database” function.
Also see:
• Chapter “Establish connection to central database”
• Chapter “Retrieve parameter record from central database”
TIM ID: 0000022822 – 001
When retrieving a parameter record from the central database the engine number must be entered. Furthermore, it
must be stated whether “Modernized data” or “Last actual data from controller” should be retrieved.
The “Next” button takes you to the next window (see next figure).
TIM ID: 0000022822 – 001
This contains more information on the parameter record for the engine number entered.
After clicking on the “Retrieve data” button, data transfer is started from the central database
to the local database on the computer.
If the selected data record is not available, the “Retrieve data” button is blocked.
Note: The FSW is also transferred if required.

Delete and retransmit to controller
Note: Only available for controllers ECU-4, ECU-7 and ECU-183.
ECU-4: The load profile data of the controller is deleted by this measure and no longer automatically transmitted
to the controller. The maintenance indicator may only be stored once the engine has stopped.
Careful: All data (operating hours, load profile, etc.) in the controller is deleted. The engine parameter
record and the functional software is then subsequently retransmitted.
The requirement for this is that the engine number exists from the device description in the local database.
The connection to the controller must not be established in this case (offline mode) to ensure that this function
can be addressed (refer to chapter “Establishing a connection to the controller”).
TIM ID: 0000022829 – 001
This dialog box must be confirmed with “OK” as shown above in order to establish an offline connection.
The previously shaded out button “Delete and retransmit to controller” is then once more available.
The connecting cable between the computer and the controller must be connected as data is to be
exchanged (programming mode, refer to chapter “Terms and definitions”).
click the “OK” button to transmit FSW and MPS data to the controller.
As shown in the order of the window above, the following steps must be run one after the other:
• Switch off the controller.
• Confirm with OK.
• Switch the controller back on within 30 seconds.
Transmission starts once all requirements have been fulfilled (can be recognized by the following animation):
TIM ID: 0000022829 – 001
Note: Please be patient. The duration of the transmission is not known in advance and can take up to 10 minutes.
Note:
• To now completely accept all of the retransmitted data into the controller, it must be subjected
to a “power-on reset”. The controller must therefore be switched off and then back on (not for
ECU-7). This must be confirmed with OK as shown in the figure above.
The controller data that has just been transmitted is now read in and then the controller is in readiness.

Calibrate actuator
Note: Only available for CDS/C controllers.
Due to the tolerances of injection mechanics, the performance of produced or overhauled (standard)
production engines is rather spread. To compensate for the performance tolerances, all engines are
subjected to performance calibration after production. The user is provided with numerous useful
hints for performing this task via the “Calibrate actuator” button.
Test actuator
Note: Only available for CDS/C controllers.
The “Test actuator” button is intended for maintenance and customer service mechanics. With its help,
it is possible to move the fuel rack from zero to full throttle position when the engine is at standstill.
Blocking and stiffness of the fuel rack can be identified in this way.
Delete functions
Note: Only available for CDS/C controllers.
There are the following delete functions:
• Load profile and operating hours
• Cyclical switch
Data provision
Note: Only available for CDS/CR controllers.
Select language
Note: Only available for ECU-7 controllers.
The language of the device description (parameter and measuring point texts) can be selected
via this function. DiaSys does not have to be restarted.
Furthermore, the language of the DiaSys interface can also be switched-over. To do this,
you must close DiaSys and then restart it.

Injector functions
Note: Only available for controllers ECU-4, ECU-7 and CDS/CR (which support this function).
An injector test function is normally integrated into the controller to detect defective injectors.
This function is activated by the interactive software and run by the controller. The cylinders are
thereby switched off one after the other and the change of speed and the volume is logged. This
allows you to make conclusions regarding a possibly defective injector.
There are two alternative test procedures available (full engine or half engine, i.e. cylinder cutout)
in order to simulate the various border conditions of the system.
The test is started by the “Start test” button. After conclusion of the test by the controller,
the test result can be shown via the “Evaluation” button:

Load profile
Displays the load profile of the connected device.
The load profile curve can be rotated around all axles using the mouse. In case of a mouse with two
buttons, keep both buttons pressed and rotate the curve by the mouse movement. In case of a mouse
with three buttons, this is done by keeping the middle button pressed.
Note: To use the data for an evaluation, they must be stored on a diskette using the “Save data for
evaluation” function as described in the “Save data for evaluation” chapter.
A context menu pops up when you press the right mouse button, in the gray area, between
the data window and the view window.
The next and the previous levels can be displayed with the “Alt >” and “Alt <” buttons.
Endurance matrix
Note: Only available for ECS-Uni.
Shows the endurance (Ti matrix) of the engine. The expected lifetime of the engine can be viewed
here . The endurance matrix of the engine is constant and set by the MTU.
The endurance curve can be rotated around all axles using the mouse. In case of a mouse with two
buttons, keep both buttons pressed and rotate the curve by the mouse movement. In case of a mouse
with three buttons, this is done by keeping the middle button pressed.
A context menu pops up when you press the right mouse button, in the gray area, between
the data window and the view window.

TBO-Parameter
Note: Only available for ECS-Uni.
This window is used for displaying and entering the TBO parameters. The values to the left can
be edited. The values to the right are planned or current values.
If data is changed then you can accept the new data with the “Close” button or discard them with “Cancel” .
Designation Description
Offset Time by which maintenance services have been carried out too early.
This time is subtracted from the calculated lifetime of the engine.
Designation Description
Modify K constant
Note: Only available for ECS-Uni.
This window is used to change the K constant.
The K constant is a value set by the MTU.
Note: This function must be carried out when the engine is at standstill. The load profile must be
saved previous to this (refer to chapter “Save all for restoration”).
New Ti matrix
Note: Only available for ECS-Uni.
A new endurance matrix (TI matrix) can be read in by a data medium here.
A file selection window opens on clicking “Search” and you can now select the appropriate file. The file
must have a “mit” extension. The TI matrix is directly transmitted into the device
Note: This function must be carried out when the engine is at standstill. The load profile must be
saved previous to this (refer to chapter “Save all (for restoration)”).
Restore...
Restores a previous backup of the maintenance forecast from diskette. The diskette used for this
must have been created using the “Save all (for restoration)” function.
This is required, e.g. after replacing the hardware.
Careful: Restoration of the maintenance forecast may only be run once the engine has stopped.

Connector assignment of the cable (MTU code number 535 530 75 34)
Connector assignment is as follows:
BDM Display
7 81 61 CAN-H
2 82 62 CAN-L
TIM ID: 0000022845 – 001
3 83 63 CAN-GND
Note:
• 60 Ω must be measured between pins 81 and 82 (bus termination resistance).
Note:
• If the transmission rate (Option 3 in the figure above, marked by an *) is not set to 125 kbaud then the
BDM download function (data transmission from the BDM to the plant) no longer functions.
Programming is carried out as follows:
“Product support” must be selected in the selection of the activity group (type of activity).
Start preparation by clicking the “Prepare BDM programming” button. In the following window, you must indicate
whether the directory structure is to be created from configuration data (PU) or basic software.
In the next step, you enter the order number and the index number for the order:
TIM ID: 0000022845 – 001
On clicking the “Select” button, a window appears in which the corresponding file can be found.
TIM ID: 0000022845 – 001
Once all required information has been entered, preparation for BDM programming is
completed by clicking the “Execute” button.
As soon as the requirements for a safe system state are ensured (BDM is connected to the dialog PC, the
power supplies are connected and stable), then you should click the “OK” button.
In the “Type of data” panel, you should make your selection for “’PU’ data” or “Basic software”
in the windows in accordance to the two following figures.
TIM ID: 0000023437 – 001
The path (directory levels) must accord to the examples provided above, otherwise
the “Program” button is not released.
In the “PCMCIA-channel” panel, select the CAN interface used at the PC end.
In the “Baudrate” panel, you can also select a transmission rate of 400 kbaud. However, this presupposes
that the transmission speed in the BDM has also been set to 400 kbaud using the E2_PROGR.OUT
program. In this case, the BDM download function no longer works.
This high transmission speed is suitable for programming the MEM module.
The transmission speed must therefore always be reset to 125 kbaud after concluding the download.
After clicking the “Program” button, the programming procedure is started.
The previously described notice (according to the figure “Signalize readiness”) must again be confirmed. The
dialog system establishes an online connection to the BDM (green panel, bottom right).
Once everything has been correctly set, you can see a progress check of the programming
in accordance to the following figure.
Note:
• From the 32 blocks to be programmed, only the assigned blocks are transmitted to the BDM. In the
example provided by the following figure, these are only a total of 8 blocks.
TIM ID: 0000023437 – 001
After completion of programming, a control screen appears logging the programming procedure.
5 Templates
5.1 Templates
Templates are used for storing collected selection lists within a device description in order
to run the selection faster in the future.
Storing template is - with one exception - only possible on the menu screen. You can also
access stored templates in the button screen.
Attention: Deleting a device description also deletes all templates for this device description.
Templates can be exported and imported (not for device type “MCS-5/RCS-5”), so that they
• can also be used in other device descriptions
• are not lost when deleting the device description.
Create and store templates
Templates can be created from:
• the selection of single parameters
• the selection of measuring points for data recording (also in the button screen)
• arranging the y(t) display
• measurement data lists
• bar graphics
Storage of a template is in the menu screen, each in a newly displayed menu between the
“Parameter” menu and the “Extras” menu.
Exception: The selection of measuring points for data recording is already made in the selection window
and can therefore be made both in the menu screen and the button screen.
Save: Selection of single parameters
