CMBYN Review
Love, unfortunately, does not always come when you need it. Sometimes it appears out of
nowhere, and then you will be miserably longing for it as you torment yourself thinking about
the unhappy scenario that may happen. In that case, Call Me By Your Name (CMBYN), directed
by Luca Guadagnino, is the movie that could give you the encouragement to put aside all the
risks and just love.
CMBYN was based on the novel of the same name written by Andre Aciman in 2007. Set in
1983, Northern Italy, this independent movie tells the story of an exotic love between Elio
(Timothee Chalamet) and Oliver (Armie Hammer). Elio Perlman, a 17 year old boy, is
everyone’s beloved by dint of his artistry, his love for books, and his breathtaking beauty. He
meets Oliver, a newly graduated American student, during a peaceful summer when his father,
an archaeologist, invited Oliver to stay at their house. Notwithstanding being irritated by Oliver’s
carefree attitude initially, Elio cannot help but falling in love with his father’s student as the days
go by. In the end, knowing that his love is reciprocated, Elio immediately starts savoring their
love because by the end of the summer, they will have to say goodbye.
CMBYN is indubitably one of the best adapted romantic movies ever. Released in November,
2017, the film was extremely well-received. Under Luca’s direction, it will guide you to the
tranquil Italian countryside, where Elio and Oliver’s love will anchor your heart to a bittersweet
and nostalgic feeling for hours and hours. The characters are so in love that they rush to cherish
and appreciate their forbidden relationship despite understanding that it will not last, and that the
valediction will crush them completely. By watching it, you can feel Elio and Oliver’s melody
making love to your insatiable soul, feel the summer heat evaporating all your insecurities, and
feel the urge to love someone running wildly through you veins, encouraging you to follow your
heart instantly.
Besides the wonderful plot, the cast is absolutely brilliant, especially Timothee. By successfully
portraying an introverted yet at the same time incredibly expressive Elio, he was nominated for
many prestigious awards such as the Academy Award. Furthermore, the scores of the film are
beautifully captivating. It won an Oscar for the Best Original Song in the same year.
With all of that being said, I strongly advise you to see CMBYN as soon as possible.
