2. Define the term fuel. What are the requirements of a good fuel?
3. Define calorific value of a fuel. What are HCV and LCV?
4. Draw neat and labeled diagram of Boys Gas calorimeter.
5. Write a short note on cracking and also give its significance.
6. Draw a neat and clean diagram of Otto Hoffmann oven and how it is useful in the recovery of by-products of
carbonization?
7. Differentiate between HTC and LTC.
8. A good petrol engine fuel is a bad diesel engine fuel. Comment.
9. What is meant by knocking?
10. How the calorific value of the fuel can be determined by using Bomb Calorimeter?
11. Sulfur is a poison to fuel. Justify the statement.
12. Explain Octane and Cetane no of the fuel. Discuss their significance.
13. Explain the significance of the following constituents of coal.
a. Moisture b) Carbon c) Ash d) Sulfur
14. What is unleaded petrol? How is its octane number improved?
15. Why GCV is less than NCV?
PART B
1. A sample containing 92% C, 5% H,3% ash and gives the following data on combustion:
Wt of coal burnt – .95 gm
Wt of water taken – 700 gm
Water equivalents – 2000gm
Rise in temperature – 2.48 gm
Cooling correction – .020C
Fuse wire correction – 10 cal
Acid correction – 60 cal Calculate GCV and NCV of coal. (Ans : 7031.6cal/g, 6770.6cal/g)
2. Calculate GCV and NCV of a coal sample containing 84% C, 1.5% S, .6% N, 5.5% H and 8.4% O.
(Ans: 8356 Kcal/Kg, 8066 Kcal/Kg)
3. Calculate the minimum wt of air required for complete combustion of 1 Kg of fuel containing; 90% C,
3.5% H, 3% O, .5% S, 1% H2O, .5% N and rest ash. ( Ans: 11.543 Kg)
4. The percentage composition of a sample of coal by weight was found to be: 76% C, 5.2% H, 12.8% O,
2.7% N, and 1.2% S. Calculate the minimum wt and volume of air required for complete combustion of
1 Kg of coal. Also calculate the quantity of air required when 505 excess air is supplied. (Ans: 10.116 Kg)
5. A gas has the following composition by volume: H2 = 10%, CH4 = 14%, O2 = 14%, N2 = 40%. If 25% excess
air is used, find the weight of air actually supplied per meter3 of this gas. (Ans: 922.8 g)
