STANDARD TEST METHOD FOR SPECIFIC GRAVITY

OF SOLID – ASTM D 854

These test methods cover the determination of the specific gravity of soil solids that pass the 4.75-
mm (No. 4) sieve, by means of a water pycnometer. Soil solids for these test methods do not
include solids which can be altered by these methods, contaminated with a substance that prohibits
the use of these methods, or are highly organic soil solids, such as fibrous matter which floats in
water. The apparatus in this test are comprised of drying oven, weighing scale, 500-ml etched flask,
funnel, distilled water, squeeze bottle, and thermometer. Specific gravity of the soil solids can be
calculated by the mass of the density of the mineral solid in soil and the mass density of water.

APPARATUS

1. Drying Oven - thermostatically controlled system, provide uniform temperatures

throughout.
2. Aluminum Cans - used to contain the soil samples.
3. Weighing Scale - device used to calculate mass and measure weight.
4. Flask - made of glass, narrow neck and rounded body, container.
5. Squeeze Bottle - plastic bottle water inside is forced out by squeezing.
6. Thermometer - instrument used to measure temperature.
7. Funnel - cone shaped device, used to catch and direct a downward flow.

SUMMARY OF TEST METHOD

The stockpile of soil was spread on the polyethylene sheet. A soil sample of 60g was taken
from the stockpile by quartering method. The obtained 60g soil sample is sieved using the sieve no.
4. Then, the sieved soil sample was oven-dried for 3 hours. After 3 hours of waiting, the oven-dried
sample was taken from the oven and prepared to pour it in the pycnometer. But before that, the
pycnometer was filled with distilled water not touching the marked line and then its mass was taken
and recorded. The oven-dried soil sample was carefully poured into the pycnometer and it was
added with water up to the marked line. The water must be free from air bubbles before taking its
mass hence the pycnometer was rolled until the air bubbles disappeared then its mass was taken and
recorded right after. The temperature of the water was also determined by submerging the
thermometer in the pycnometer. All the necessary data were recorded and the specific gravity will
be solved.
60 grams of soil was obtained by
quartering method from the soil stockpile.

The obtained soil sample was sieved

using the no. 4 sieve.

The sieved soil sample is oven-dried for 3

hours.

The mass of the pycnometer filled with

distilled water not reaching the marked
line is obtained and recorded as Ma .

The soil sample is removed from the

oven and poured into the pycnometer
with distilled water.

The pycnometer is added with distilled

water up to the marked line.

The air bubbles is removed by rolling the

pycnometer and its mass is recorded
as Mb .

The thermometer is submerged into the

pycnometer and recorded its temperature
as T.

The recorded data is used to compute

specific gravity of the soil sample.
