PRESENTS

If you don’t fight for what you want, then who will?
– Kevin Nguyen

“Identity. Belonging. Away with place it goes.

Away with time it goes.
Away with home it goes.”
– Lucy Luo
MISCELLANEOUS Productions is proud to present their 2018 / 2019 new work,
AWAY with HOME, September 27 and 28 at the Scotiabank Dance Centre.
What do home, identity, and belonging mean to you? With those three questions
in mind, director Elaine Carol began rehearsals of AWAY with HOME, working with
youth from the community who drew from their own personal experiences. Together,
they have created an entirely new work that explores issues of immigration, racism,
mental health, bullying, maturation, family, victimization, identity, and belonging.
AWAY with HOME is a transdisciplinary performance work that features five youth
from the community ranging in age from 14 to 22. AWAY with HOME combines
contemporary and hip hop dance, neo-soul pop and hip hop music, Taiko drumming,
image theatre, performance art, and poetry to examine the thematic questions.

About MISCELLANEOUS Productions: MISCELLANEOUS Productions is a hip

hop theatre boot camp for youth from the community. We present to the public an
original theatrical work every two years, and tour internationally, give free peer-run
workshops for at-risk youth, and make films about our performances. We integrate
artistic disciplines with community development models and popular culture and
educate the public and professional artists about the prevention of, and responses
to, the challenges facing youth who deal with multiple barriers.

Dedication of AWAY with HOME: Natasha D’Angostino had been working with
the cast members as a singing/vocal coach for our current production early in our
process. She was in to work with us on January 5, 2019 in the late afternoon and it
was an incredible session. She brought in two Stevie Wonder songs to get our youth
used to singing soul, and had them harmonizing. Singing with them, her voice was
completely beautiful, her tone rich and full as she joined them in “Isn’t She Lovely.”
She touched the hearts and minds of our youth cast members and professional staff.
Natasha passed later that evening in a tragic car accident. This performance work is
dedicated to the memory of Natasha D’Angostino, her light, her voice, her music.

Note: MISCELLANEOUS Productions and The Dance Centre are fragrance-free. Please refrain from
wearing any scented products, including perfumes, essential oils, hair and body products, and
laundry detergents. The chemicals in scented products make some people sick and can cause severe
asthma, allergies, headaches, nausea, etc. Thank you.
