REVIEW/REACTION:
Bar Boys became a much awaited movie not just for law students but for all law
graduates and lawyers as well for it depicts how life seems to be when someone start
working out for their dreams of becoming a lawyer, their struggles, sacrifices and challenges
the ambitious law student has to go through and lawyers themselves had went through. The
story tackles about the life of four 4 friends who were dreaming of becoming a lawyer where
altogether they took law school admission exam but eventually only three of them managed
to get admitted in an unnamed school. When the class has officially commenced, the life of
three boys became more stringent, it shows how life of law student became very demanding
when it comes to time and sleep, and the struggles for personal matter became an issue as
well. The preparation for the first class is one of the highlight of the movie where it feels very
relatable, the feeling is the combination of excitement and nervous. The unforgettable Chi
Ming Tsoi VS Court of Appeals case was discussed in one of its scene and everyone was
hilarious except those who aren’t law students. As the story goes, it can be seen how the
jam-packed classroom from the start started to thin and decrease, many has given up and
some failed until those three boys have reached their final phase, the graduation day. It was
far more difficult than the rest for one of them has to face the most difficult test, the sickness
of his father and how to be included in the list of candidates for graduation. Though he
managed to graduate, he lost his father that result of his flunking in his first attempt in the
Bar Exam. The movie also showed the atmosphere whenever the Bar Examination is taking
place and it can be seen that the situation is filled with so much emotion. In the end, the
three became successful lawyers but the story of Eric who flunked his first attempt but
placed 9th in his second attempt in the Bar Exam became a source of inspiration and
motivation that to succeed in the Bar Examination doesn’t depend on how eloquent,
intelligent or how sharp photographic memory one has, but the combination of grit or
determination and hard work.
I decline to make any criticism on the movie since its highlight is not on how the
students answers questions during recitation, but the scene of actual situation of the law
students while inside the classroom and their life and struggles. In this movie, families,
friends and love ones could understand that law students life is not easy and why time is as
precious as gold. More importantly, it reveals the reason why lawyers are highly coveted
and compensated professionals.
Overall, it was an outstanding movie. It has so many lessons to learn, it teaches the
law student how to work hard for their dreams, how to persevere, how much hardship they
had to endure and to sacrifice in order to reach that dreams. Why determination is of
essential requirement and to be a lawyer is not a product of an overnight success, it is a
product of a diligence, determination, sacrifices and humbleness. One of the lines that truly
triggered me is the line of law professor Justice Hernandez where she said “If you want to
be successful, you sacrifice”. This line gave me motivation and perhaps a calling that being
a law student shouldn’t be taken for granted, take your everyday life during schools as a
preparation for the Bar and let the distractions away even if it means that you have to
deprive yourself for something that makes you happy for in the end, what you sow is what
you reap.
