VAJRAYANA , INNOVATION AND COMPLEX SYSTEMS

Thank you Bhutan and CBS!!

Dr Paola Di Maio, PhD
Bhutan 1 July 2016

BACKGROUND
About me: knowledge and truth seeker, gets in troueble often, travel everywhere,
journalist, writer author and publisher, information systems engineer, mind
scientist, lecturer, explorer,
How I got here: realised that despite access to all human knowledge human remain
ignorant (and evil), started seeking the barriers to enlightenment that exist in
the mind.
My research field : applied systemics - interdisciplinary study of everything,
knowledge unification, technology

ABOUT THIS TALK

MAIN IDEA IS THAT THERE ARE INTERESTING PARALLELS AND SHARED CONCEPTUALISATIONS
BETWEEN CSS AND VAJRAYANA
Complex Systems, Inter-Multi-TransDisciplinarity
Vajrayana, A personal perspective
Equivalence, Convergence, Complementarity
Commonalities/Shared metaphors

VAJRAYANA TRADITION OF INNOVATION

Vajrayana (as discussed by eminent others in this conference) is many things to
many people
Difficult to define exactly what vajarayana is because it cannot be completely
separated from other traditions with which it shares many precepts
Is the result of synthesis of different traditions
And process of ongoing innovation
(some of the concepts discussed in this talk apply to VJ as well as to other
traditions)

COMPLEXITY IN VAJRAYANA
Very powerful but very complex

Complexity requires high level of cognitive refinement

(which is generally the result of practice)

SYNTHESIS

Integral approach/system thinking view

System thinking takes a WHOLE view

Phenomena are studied as a whole

Integral approach *system is more than the sum of its part

COMPLEX SYSTEMs
D1 Any system featuring a large number of interacting components (agents,
processes, etc.) whose aggregate activity is nonlinear (not derivable from the
summations of the activity of individual components) and typically exhibits
holarchicl self-organization under selective pressures.
D2 a new field of science studying how parts of a system give rise to the
collective behaviors of the system, and how the system interacts with its
environment.

SOME PROPERTIES OF COMPLEX SYSTEMS

Non linear
Not all the dependencies are visible/observable
Chaos Theory Example of Butterfly /Thurnderstorm
Display emergent behaviour (not predictable)

EMERGENCE = SPONTAENUS INNOVATION

(WHAT FINALLY ARISES)
POSSIBLE THANKS TO INTEGRATION

SOCIO TECHNICAL COMPLEXITY

iNCLUDES PEOPLE AND ENVIRONMENT (EXTENDED BOUNDARY)

EXPONENTIAL
COMPLEXITY
DUE TO
INCREASED AGENTS
AND INTERACTIONS

ADAPTIVITY
The ability of a system to evolve/adapt following interactions

System/phenomena under observation evolves by making constrant adjustments

COEVOLUTION
In Biology: the influence of closely associated species on each other in their
evolution.

Different kinds of coevolution

DIFFERENT TYPES OF COEVOLUTION:

DIVERGENT
CONVERGENT
PARALLEL
MUTUALISTIC/RECIPROCAL

COEVOLUTION IN VAJRAYANA
The notion of coevolution can be applied to understand the ongoing evolution of
vajrayana

As a response to interaction with various traditions and belief systems, in

different contexts

EMERGENCE/DEPENDENCE ARISING
Emergence in complex systems is comparable to dependence arising
Form is emptyness. Emptyness is form

Pratītyasamutpāda (Sanskrit: पतततयसममतपपद; Pali: पटटचसममपपपद paṭiccasamuppāda), commonly

translated as dependent origination, or dependent arising, states that all dharmas
("things") arise in dependence upon other dharmas: "if this exists, that exists; if
this ceases to exist, that also ceases to exist.

VISUALIZATION TECHNIQUES
Visualization techniques (diagrams, charts) are used to help represent complexity
and make it understandable

NESTING in INFORMATICS

NESTING IN VAJRAYANA PRACTICE

COMBINING DIFFERENT PRACTICES

PRACTICE A STARTS
PRACTICE B STARTS
PRACTICE B FINISHES
PRACTICE A FINISHES

MULTIPLE VIES IN VJ
VJ can be described as a complex system with many aspects and dimensions

MULTIPLE VIEWS IN TECHNOLOGY

SYSTEM BOUNDARY
VERY CENTRAL NOTION TO SYSTEM MODELLING

COMPLEX SYSTEMS ARE OFTEN OPEN (BOUNDARY IS NOT SET BUT ADAPTS TO ALLOW FOR
ADJUSTMENTS)

PRACTICE BOUNDARY
SUCH AS RETREAT BOUNDARY
(The mark around the Physical Space where retreat takes place)

MIND SPEECH BODY BOUNDARY

(such as mantra recitation, prostration etc to keep the being within the boundary
of the Dharma)

VJANA A TYPE OF COMPLEX SYSTEM

To consider Vajrayana (and Dharma in general) as a type of complex system can help
to understand some of the underlying complexities and dynamics

Some of the nove mehods methods used in CS can be relevant and useful to the
understandng, the practice and the propagation of Vajrayana

CAN COMPLEX SYSTEM SCIENCE BE USEFUL TO DHARMA/VAJRAYANA?

Yes. Phenomena such as Emergence, Coevolution and other metaphors used in CSS are
now being studied SCIENTIFICALLY and can be applied to understand and explain
phenomena and experiences in the Dharma Traditions
CAN DHARMA BE USEFUL TO CSS?
Yes, ASPECTS OF the NATURE OF MIND (duality, cognition, perception, karma etc)
can help to explain and to understand some aspects complex systems science
(for example, that limitations of our view are directly related to limitations of
cognition which depend on consciousness)

THANK YOU!
THIS IS EXPLORATORY WORK
IS THIS GOING ANYWHERE?
LETS CONSIDER A RESEARCH AGENDA
BHUTAN IS FANTASTIC, CONFERENCE AMAZING
THANK YOU BHUTHAN AND CBS
