Chapter 1: Skills required to develop a successful Mechanical
Engineering career
As Engineers we take up Mechanical, Aerospace or Automotive Engineering in our undergrad to

do the following.
• Working on real engineering problems. You will be applying the theory you learnt in solving a
real-world problem while pursuing research in your grad school.
• This will in-turn help you get a well-paid job in the domain of your interest.

PROJECT – 1
Project Name - CV Joint
Domain - Multi-body Dynamics
Principle and Application

The Universal joints allow the drive shafts to move up and down with suspension when
the shaft is running so that the power can be transmitted when the drive shaft isn't in a
straight line between the transmission and drive wheels.
All front-wheel-drive cars have Constant Velocity joints or CV joints on both ends of the
drive shafts. Inner CV joints connect the drive shafts to the transmission, while the outer
CV joints connect the drive shafts to the wheels.
Many rear-wheel drives and four-wheel drive cars, as well as trucks, also have CV
joints.

Project Name - Trammel with Slider Motion
The trammel is an example of the four-bar linkage mechanism with two pivots and two
sliders. The sliders are connected to a rod by a pivot joint. When the sliders are moving
back and forth the channels, the end of the rod moves in an elliptical path.
It is used to create an elliptical motion or for machining an elliptical surface. It is used in

automatic tool changer in machining. Elliptical Trammels are used for drawing large
ellipses. They can be used to draw smaller ellipses but only draw one half at a time,
having to be reversed to draw the complete ellipse.

Project Name - Intermittent Motion Using Geneva and Cam

The Geneva drive is a gear mechanism that translates a continuous rotation into an
intermittent rotary motion. The rotating drive wheel has a pin that reaches into a slot of
the driven wheel advancing it in one step. The drive wheel also has a raised circular
blocking disc that locks the driven wheel in position between the steps. It is used in
Turret lathe, Projectors, Cameras, etc.
It applies to mass production in the production and automobile industries. Geneva

wheels having the form of the driven wheel were also used in mechanical watches to
limit the tension of the spring, such that it would operate only in the range where its
elastic force is nearly linear. It can also be seen in the indexing table in assembly lines,
tool changer for CNC machines, and so on.

Project Name - Double barrel Cam pushing the workpiece

Double barrel Cam is a cam in which the follower rides on the surface of a cylinder. The
follower rides in a double groove cut into the surface of a cylinder. It is used to convert
rotational motion to linear motion parallel to the rotational axis of the cylinder. It is also
used to move the workpiece.
Properly machined cylindrical cams are used in engine gearboxes. For example, it may
have slots milled into the side of the cylinder such that the follower is positively driven in
each way and does not rely on a spring for its return. The other applications include
machine tool drives, such as reciprocating saws, and shift control barrels in sequential
transmission in most modern motorcycles.

Project Name - Quick return motion mechanism

A Quick Return Motion mechanism is used to convert rotary motion into reciprocating
motion. The time taken for the forward stroke is more than the return stroke. It uses a
system of links with three turning pairs, a sliding pair and are driven by circular motion
source. As the disk rotates, the black slide moves forward and backward.
The quick return is usually used where the arc or the path of the return is not as usual
like, where the angle of the blade cutting is one directional. In another direction, it has to
return to the original point without doing any cutting. Many machines have this type of
mechanism. A shaper machine is the best example.

Project Name - Linear Linkage Mechanism

Linear Linkage Mechanism has a connection with the series of kinetic joints and links.
Due to the rotation motion in a link, the subsequent links also have a change in motion
which is used to get the linear motion. The construction of this mechanism is the point
which is connected to the crank moves in a circular path and the point traversing the
straight line is selected as the output point.
This kind of mechanism can be seen in the weight lifting machine. Scissor lifts are the
best example of a linear linkage mechanism that is often used in firefighting and
construction fields.

Project Name - Cycloidal speed reducer

The input shaft drives an eccentric bearing that, in turn, drives the cycloidal disc in an
eccentric, cycloidal motion. The perimeter of this disc is geared to the stationary ring
gear and has a series of output shaft pins or rollers placed through the face of the disc.
These output shaft pins directly drive the output shaft as the cycloidal disc rotates. The
radial motion of the disc is not translated to the output shaft. It is generally used in
gearboxes.
The main advantage of cycloidal reducers is their property of zero or near-zero

backlash, which translates into high precision and high accuracy. This is especially in
demand where highly precise and accurate positioning is required, for instance, in
robotic applications, machine tools, and similar applications.

Project Name - Gripper Mechanism

A gripper is a device that enables the holding of an object to be manipulated. The easier
way to describe a gripper is to think of the human hand. Just like a hand, a gripper
enables holding, tightening, handling, and releasing of an object. A gripper is just one
component of an automated system.
Grippers are used in almost all the industries to pick and place the component or object.
Nowadays, flexible grippers are developed, and it can be used to handle complex
dimensional components also.

Project Name - Barrel cam
Barrel Cams are used mainly to convert rotational motion to linear motion parallel to the
rotational axis of the cylinder. These mechanisms are often made as simple as possible,
with a few parts and joints to minimize backlash and elasticity.
This type of cams is used in many applications such as engine gearboxes, machine tool
drives, reciprocating saws, and most modern motorcycles.

The Kinetic clock is made of the kinetic linkages. It is a moving clock that changes its
shape throughout the day. The clock will be in a wider shape when it is noon and in
shorter shape in the evening. It is a modern wall clock.

Project Name - Whitworth quick return mechanism

The Whitworth quick return mechanism converts rotary motion into reciprocating motion,
but unlike the crank and slider, the forward reciprocating motion is at a different rate
than the backward stroke. At the bottom of the drive arm, the peg only has to move
through a few degrees to sweep the arm from left to right, but it takes the remainder of
the revolution to bring the arm back.
This mechanism can be visualized in Power-driven saw revolver mechanisms and

slotting mechanism. The main application of this mechanism is a shaper machine that is
used to produce horizontal, vertical, or flat surfaces. The shaper holds the single point
cutting tool in ram, and the workpiece is fixed on the table.

Project Name - Radial Engine
Radial Engine is a reciprocating type IC Engine, mostly designed for aircraft. The power
to weight ratio of this engine is very high. This engine works similar to any other four-
stroke internal combustion engine. Each cylinder has an intake, compression, power,
and exhaust strokes. They differ from inline and horizontally opposed engines in their
firing order and the way they connect to the crankshaft.
Radial engines have a relatively low maximum rpm (rotations per minute) rate, so they
can often drive propellers without any sort of reduction gearing. Because all of the
pistons are in the same plane, they all get even cooling and normally can be air-cooled.
That saves the weight of water-cooling. Radial engines can be attached to a wide range
of aircraft, and are among the most widely used and versatile options on the market
today.

Project Name - Schmidt Coupling Mechanism
The Schmidt coupling consists of three discs interconnected by links. All three discs of a
Schmidt coupling rotate with equal velocity. The distance between the shafts can be
varied between the minimum value and a maximum of twice the length of the links.
While the coupling is undulating, there is no phase shift between shafts. Rotating slider
cranks similar to those used to transfer power to the wheels of a steam locomotive
engine are used to power these discs.
Schmidt couplings are especially good for roll applications, such as paper processing or
converting. This can be seen in Printing and wood cutting machine.

Project Name - Compression test on a spring
Domain - Finite Element Analysis
The compression test is to analyze the behavior of a material while it experiences a

compressive load. The compression tests involve forces applied to more than one axis
of the specimen as well as the testing of the sample at elevated and lowered
temperatures. Uniaxial, biaxial, triaxial, cold temperature, elevated temperature, fatigue,
and creep are all examples of different compression tests that may be performed upon
a material.
Actuation on pedals, switches, and springs in the automotive industry and the
containers used to carry volatile and dangerous materials in the packaging industry are
analyzed in this method.

Project Name - Tensile test on a Spring
The tensile test is carried out to analyze the behavior of a material when it is subjected
to an axial stretching load. The tensile test may be performed under ambient or
controlled (heating or cooling) conditions to determine the tensile properties of a
material. It is very much important to test the springs for proper functioning under
extreme conditions. So, design calculations must be done according to this.
Fasteners, O-Rings, seat belts, hand brake levers are analyzed through this method.

Project Name - Wrench Analysis
Wrench analysis is an example of a torsional analysis. The torsion test is to determine

the behavior of a material when twisted or under torsional forces as a result of applied
moments that cause shear stress. The torsion test will be carried out with a torsion
loading or a combination of torsional and axial loading.
A torque wrench is used where the tightness of screws and bolts is crucial. It allows the
operator to set the torque applied to the fastener so it can be matched to the
specifications for a particular application. Automotive steering column, fasteners, and
driveshafts are subjected to the torsional load and are tested by this method.

Project Name - Truss
A truss is an assembly of beams or other elements that creates a rigid structure. A truss
is a structure where the members are organized and behave as a single object. It is a
very rigid structure, and it transfers the load from a single point to a much wider area. It
is generally used in the construction field and used for the chassis of automobiles.
Trusses are used in a broad range of buildings, mainly where there is a requirement for
very long spans, such as in airport terminals, aircraft hangers, sports stadia roofs,
auditoriums, and other leisure buildings

Project Name - Torsion test
The torsion test is to determine the behavior of a material when twisted or under
torsional forces as a result of applied moments that cause shear stress. The torsion test
will be carried out with a torsion only loading or a combination of torsional and axial
loading. Torsion test is performed by the manufacturers to simulate real-life service
conditions, check product quality, verify designs, and ensure proper manufacturing
techniques.

Project Name - Stress in Gear Teeth

Gears are used in the power transmission system. The tooth meshing in gear causes
the vibration and noise of the machine. The design and development of efficient gears
are much important in order to increase its life and efficiency and to reduce friction.
Since gears are used on the critical applications, it is necessary to
analyze it before using
Gears can be used to increase or decrease the torque, or power, of a given object. Spur
gears are used to this effect in washing machines, blenders, clothes dryers,
construction equipment, fuel pumps, and mills. The simulation helps to redesign the
gear to reduce the shear stress and creep formation.

Project Name - Sheet Metal Bending

Sheet metal bending is the plastic deformation work over an axis, creating a change in
shape while having the same volume of the part. The metal bending enacts both the
tension and compression in the material. The metal binding operation requires the
punch and die. Depending upon the final job requirement, the shape of the punch and
die will change.
Sheet metal bending machine is used for bending and straightening the sheet metal
parts of the boiler tanks and pressure vessels.

Project Name - Sphere Pressing

Pressing work is a chip less operation used to create the shape of the punch. In the
pressing operation, the necessary force is applied to create the required shape. Hot and
cold pressing are the two types of pressing. The casting of the materials like
magnesium is done through hot pressing.
The hydraulic press is mostly used for industrial purposes, where a large pressure is
required for compressing metals into thin sheets. An industrial hydraulic press uses the
material to be worked upon along with the help of the press plates to crush or punch the
material into a thin sheet. This mechanism is also used in Casting, Compaction of metal
powders

Project Name - Non-Linear Dynamic Sheet Bending

Bending is the forming of sheet metal by the application of force, which exerts pressure
on a certain length of material either at a certain point or linear as an evenly distributed
weight. Bending of sheet metals can be done with press brakes, roll bending machines,
and embossing/coining machines.
The V shape, U shape, and Channel shape of the sheet metals are created by this
bending method.

Project Name - Pipe bending

Pipe bending is a metal forming process to form the pipes and tubes. The bending
process can be a heat supported or by a cold forming method. Roll bending is a part of
pipe bending where a straight tube is paused through a series of rollers that apply
pressure on the tube and thus changing the radius of the tube.
Pipe bending applications are numerous. This is used to create a variety of elbows,
process industry piping, pipe trusses, canopies, bridges, arches, Jacket for storage
tanks used in heating or cooling, Air conditioning, radiators, and many other
applications.

Project Name - Ball-bearing
When an axle is rotated, the contact points where the axle touches the non-rotating part
of the mechanism, friction occurs due to a difference in speed between the two parts.
This friction makes the axle lose mechanical power through heat/noise.
In order to reduce these losses, we can use two techniques:

-Reduce the speed differential at the contact point
-Reduce the area of contact between the parts.
Bearing simulation has been carried out to calculate the load distribution within the
bearing. Simulations of rolling bearings bring an increased understanding of their
behavior and shorten product development time.
Their application lies in all branches of industry, from the production of heavy-duty
machinery in mining and stamping, in all modes of transport or automotive or aviation,
to the application of miniature bearings to high-speed dental drills

Project Name - Chassis

Chassis is the main support structure of the vehicle, and It bears all the stresses on the
vehicle in both static and dynamic conditions. The various aggregates of the vehicle are
mounted over the chassis.
It supports the weight of various systems of the vehicle, such as the engine,
transmission system, and also a load of passengers. It is capable of withstanding the
stresses arising due to bad road conditions while applying the brake and during the
acceleration of the vehicle. Also, to withstand centrifugal force while cornering.
Depending upon the application, some of the main types of frame are
1. Ladder Frame - Heavy commercial vehicles such as trucks and buses mainly use the
ladder frame structure. Some light commercial vehicles like pickup trucks also use the
ladder frame
2. Tubular Frame - Some racing vehicles and All-Terrain vehicles use tubular frame
design
3. Monocoque - Almost all high-performance cars use a monocoque design

A piston is a component of the IC engine which is used to transfer force from expanding
gas in the cylinder to the crankshaft via a connecting rod. It is an important part so that it
must be designed in such a way to overcome the mechanical and thermal stresses.
The piston operates in a very difficult dynamic, thermal, and mechanical environment. It
must also ensure a tight fit inside the cylinder, and to withstand a maximum pressure of
combustion. Fatigue strength, excellent wear resistance, and the coefficient of thermal
expansion are necessary characteristics that the piston should have.
The common use of piston can be seen

• In the combustion chamber of an IC engine,
• In a hydraulic pump, especially a variable volume one,
• In a hydraulic cylinder, like a ram, or double-acting actuator,
• In a steam engine to convert the stream to power motion,

A heat exchanger is a system used to transfer heat between two or more fluids. Heat
exchangers are used in both cooling and heating processes. The fluids may be
separated by a solid wall to prevent mixing, or they may be in direct contact. The heat
exchangers are typically is of parallel, counter, and cross arrangement. The most well-
known type of heat exchanger is a car radiator.
Heat exchangers are used in all the thermal related fields such as space heating,
refrigeration, air conditioning, power stations, chemical plants, petrochemical plants,
petroleum refineries, natural-gas processing, and sewage treatment, etc.

Project Name - Vortex Shedding

Vortex shedding is an oscillating flow that takes place when a fluid such as air or water
flows past a bluff (as opposed to streamlined) body at certain velocities. The fluid flow
past the object creates alternating low-pressure vortices on the downstream side of the
object. The object will tend to move toward the low-pressure zone and induce vibration
and high-frequency current, which can lead to failure of the structure.
Flow over cylinders, Chimney, Overhead power line wires, Automobile whip Radio
Antenna, etc. are some of the examples where vortex shedding can be observed.

the building with detailed layouts of smoke extraction systems. The virtual layout of the
building will demonstrate the behavior of smoke and fire, enabling to examine the

establishes the best smoke ventilation design system for your building.
This system has its application at Fire growth, Industrial Chimney, Chemical processing,
etc. Fire engineers use this simulation to ensure the people have enough time to
escape from the building when there is ablaze. This simulation is also used in the
automotive industry to design the automobile exhaust.

Industry, Milk Industry, and LPG industries.

walls alone.

or sail. An airfoil-shaped body moved through a fluid produces an aerodynamic force.
The component of this force perpendicular to the direction of motion is called the lift.
The component parallel to the direction of motion is called drag. The study of Drag and
Lift aerodynamic force is important in applications like aircraft, sailing, automobile, etc.
Airfoils have the potential for use in the design of aircraft, propellers, rotor blades, wind
turbines, and other applications of aeronautical engineering.

A water wheel is a machine for converting the energy of flowing or falling water into

villages. They were probably the first method of creating mechanical energy to replace
that of humans and animals.

Amongst sports projectiles, the badminton shuttlecock is incomparable in form and
mass. This results in unique aerodynamic characteristics and flight behavior of the
shuttlecock. The uneven and complicated geometry makes the computational analysis
difficult to perform. And results predictions are, most of the time, misleading. Hence the
simulation and understanding of the aerodynamic characteristics of a badminton shuttle,
using Computational Fluid Dynamics, is performed for the prediction of the complicated
flow fields that are associated with the bluff body aerodynamics of badminton shuttles.
The shuttlecock is a high-drag projectile used in the sport of badminton.

Project Name - Water boiling

A 3D computational fluid dynamic (Computational Fluid Dynamics) model was
performed using the commercial software package. Simulation was carried over to
analyze the flow characteristics and the thermal stratification evolution during the
charging and discharging phases. When modeling Boiling, we see a liquid-to-gas phase
transition that begins when the temperature of the liquid is raised above its saturation
temperature.
This study was further extended to explore the effect of varying tank position
(horizontal/vertical) on the system performance. This simulation is used to analyze the
Nuclear Reactor, Hotel and residential boilers, chemical, and food processing
industries, etc.

Natural convection, also known as free convection is a mechanism, or type of mass and
heat transport, in which the fluid motion is generated only by density differences in the
fluid occurring due to temperature gradients, not by any external source (like a pump,
fan, suction device, etc.). In natural convection, fluid surrounding a heat source receives
heat, and thermal expansion becomes less dense and rises and allows to transfer the
heat to other regions.
This simulation is used in the cooling of reactor cores in nuclear power plants, cooling of
electronic devices, heating of houses by electrical baseboard heaters, etc.

Project Name - Rocket (Shock Wave)

When an object moves faster than the speed of sound, and there is an abrupt decrease
in the flow area, shock waves are generated in the flow. Shock waves are very small
regions in the gas where the gas properties change by a large amount, namely
pressure, density, temperature, etc. The shock wave can be so powerful that it can
knock things over. For example, bombs create shock waves. A shock wave can be
destructive because it vibrates the material around the point in an extremely hard and
fast wave, which causes other things that the material touches to vibrate, too, and even
make them explode.
This type of simulation is used to analyze the properties of Ramjet, Scramjet, Wave
Disk Engine, Memristors, Transonic wings, turbines, supernovae, earthquakes.

Mixing of liquids frequently occurs in process engineering. The nature of liquids to blend
determines the equipment used. Single-phase blending tends to involve low-shear,
high-flow mixers to cause liquid engulfment, while multi-phase mixing generally requires
the use of high-shear, low-flow mixers to create droplets of one liquid in laminar,
turbulent or transitional flow regimes, depending on the Reynolds number of the flow.
Turbulent or transitional mixing is frequently conducted with turbines or impellers;
laminar mixing is conducted with helical ribbon or anchor mixers.
This simulation is used in Heat Transfer in the process industry, biomedical industry,
environmental and atmospheric modeling, meteorology, chemical industry, food and
beverage industries, etc.

Project Name - Convergent Divergent Nozzle

Nozzles are used to modify the flow of fluid. The conserved energy principle allows flow
to alter its characteristics and make it suitable for the application. In a CD nozzle, the
hot exhaust leaves the combustion chamber and converges down to the minimum area
or throat of the nozzle. The throat size is chosen to choke the flow and set the mass
flow rate through the system.
The convergent-divergent nozzle is one such nozzle that allows creating a huge amount
of thrust to propel a rocket or supersonic gas turbine engine. These nozzles are used in
Steam Turbine, Supersonic Gas Turbine Engine, Rocket Propulsion, Formula car intake
system, Water supply pumps, etc.

Open-channel flow is a type of liquid flow within a conduit with a free surface, known as
a channel. The behavior of open channel flow is governed by the effects of viscosity and
gravity relative to the inertial forces of the flow. Surface tension has a minor contribution
but does not play a significant enough role in most circumstances to be a governing
factor. Depending on the effect of viscosity relative to inertia, as represented by the
Reynolds number, the flow can be either laminar, turbulent, or transitional.

irrigation systems, etc.

Helical coils of the circular cross-section have been used in a wide variety of
applications due to simplicity in manufacturing. Forced convection is a mechanism or
type of transport in which an external source generates fluid motion. The helical coil
heat exchanger showed an increase in the heat transfer rate, effectiveness, and overall
heat transfer coefficient over the straight tube heat exchanger on all mass flow rates
and operating conditions.
This system is used in power plants, nuclear industry, process plants, heat recovery
systems, refrigeration, food industry, etc. Helical coil heat exchangers are used as
condensers in HVAC systems because of its greater heat transfer rate and compact
structure.

A shell and tube heat exchanger is a class of heat exchanger designs. It is the most
common type of heat exchanger in oil refineries and other large chemical processes
and is suited for higher-pressure applications. Tube banks are commonly-employed
design elements in heat exchangers. Both plain and finned tube banks are widely found.
One fluid runs through the tubes, and another fluid flows over the tubes (through the
shell) to transfer heat between the two fluids Tube bundles are a sub-component in
shell-and-tube heat exchangers, where the flow resembles crossflow at some places
and longitudinal flow elsewhere.

The siphon is particularly a tube in an inverted "U" shape, which causes the liquid to
flow upward, above the surface of a reservoir, with no pump, but powered by the fall of

energy by excluding the requirement of the pump.
