CONCEPT & INSPIRATION
Geometric Design
The exterior envelope is composed of a

twenty four truss modules arrayed around a
circular arc. Referred to as petals', the
trusses create a large-scale repetitive
pattern which encloses the stadium seating
bowl. In addition to giving the stadium its
visual image, the shell also functionally
provides shade and rain protection for the
seating bowl. The structure also houses the
stadium technical equipment such as the
sports lighting.
Form Variations
The parametric definition of the exterior

geometry allowed the design team to
efficiently explore design alternatives and
variations within the conceptual constraints.
Parametric control of the point cloud was
the primary means of controlling the form.
Parameters for manipulating
the point cloud (sorting, transforming)
enabled the team to study different
configurations of the exterior surfaces.
Process
For the stadium, a parametrically driven

process was implemented An elaborate
parametric algorithm was developed in
Dynamo and was used to study the stadium
geometry and coordinate information with
the team of collaborators. Exceeding the
capabilities for the main stadium system,
the tennis center algorithm
was significantly expanded and included

CASE STUDIES
1. The New Perth Stadium, Optus Stadium,Australia
Key Features
● Stadium with six ﬂoor levels

● 60,000 seats in AFL mode with an additional
5,000 drop-in seats for rectangular sports
● Provision for future expansion to 70,000 seats or
more
● Striking bronze facade reﬂecting the State’s
geology
● A light weight ‘halo’ roof
● 85% of seats under cover
● State-of-the-art LED lights to show home team
colours by night
● A community harbour that will include Aboriginal

heritage stories and link the new six-platform
stadium train station to the river
● A distinctively landscaped, activated precinct
around the Stadium in non-event mode,
including restaurants, a community recreation
oval, rehabilitation parkland, a nature
playground, a sports playground and a
grass-sloped amphitheatre
Inferences:
● Design meets International Cricket Council
standards and requirements.
● Five drop-in cricket wickets to replicate the
character of the Western Australian Cricket
Association (WACA) wicket plus 16 outdoor
practice wickets.
● Playing surface 177m x 141m fence line to fence
line.
● Sight screens positioned to reduce impact on fan
views and maximise seating for a minimum of
55,000 fans.
● Two dedicated Player Viewing Rooms with direct
access to changing rooms and playing surface.
● Range of different stage locations: eastern stand,
northern stand or centre of the pitch.
● Maximum capacity in concert mode is 70,000 when
the stage is located in the centre of the pitch.
2. Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, India
Structure
North and South stands are newly constructed. The

structure rests on piles and on footing in few areas. The
RCC elements comprises of raft, retaining walls, pile
caps, footings, columns, inclined deck beam and slabs
etc.
In case of East and West stands, area admeasures

approx. 3500 sq mtrs. Existing foundations and
supporting columns were strengthened for BUCKET
chair seating arrangement without any alteration in the
seating capacity and stadium profile in view of its close
vicinity to the Western Railway track. The strengthening
was done using fiber reinforced Kevlar by introducing
composite columns.

Roof Statistics
The 25metre cantilevered roof is the most interesting feature of the

proposed stadium. It completely opens up the stands as no pillars or
supports come in the way of the spectator’s view.
The stadium is covered with aesthetically appealing and elegantly spaced

structural steel roofing. The challenge was to design a 22 meter cantilever
and its supporting system using bent tubular hollow steel sections
fabricated out of plates of different thicknesses and of varied diameters.

rings
The entire structural steel roofing was covered with PTFE coated glass
tensile fabric.
STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS
Steel Petals:
Enormous steel petals form the exterior shell, allowing

for ample ventilation and creating an exquisite
geometry.
Steel stiffeners :
A steel stiffener system running on top holds the

apices of the petal structures and adjoining trusses. It
is held by an internal ring going around the stadium
and are color-coated blue to create a unique
statement.
Steel Trusses:
Every petal structure is held by curved trusses which

are intertwined ,and are visible in the exterior facade
to showcase the the steel structural system.
Each petal covers the internal trusses which supoorts

the seating.
STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS
Truss : Benefits
Trusses are an integral part of modern

architecture and building. They can
carry so much weight by themselves,
their presence enables builders to
achieve maximal economy of materials,
easily cover large distances with simple
truss meshes, evenly take the load from
heavy structures, easily access entire
structure, save on expensive materials,
and build structures that are accessible
for maintenance after initial
construction.
Steel Tubing : Benefits
Although stainless steel piping is more

expensive than plastic piping, it
provides many benefits over plastic
pipes, including: Low corrosion:
Stainless steel has a low corrosion rate.
The metal will retain its rust-free
appearance for many years, even when
water is constantly inside the tubes
Tensile shell Benefits
They’re used to refer to the construction

of roofs using a membrane held in place
on steel cables. Their main
characteristics are the ability to cover
large spans, and their malleability. Most
tensile membrane structures have high
sun reflectivity and low absorption of
sunlight, thus resulting in less energy
used within a building and ultimately
reducing electrical energy costs.

MATERIAL PALETTE
Stadium Materials:
Stadium Canopy and Cladding

Materials:The grandstand roof, fascia and
rear in temperate climates should be a
Plastisol Coated Steel material. In hot sunny
climates and humid climates, double sided
long life enamels will be better. The
grandstands purlins may be plain Zeta zeds;
or zeds with bird preventers. For a little
more, the purlins can be hot rolled box
sections, hot dip galvanised inside and out.
Where the stand does not go to the corner
flag, or on a cricket or athletics or racing
stands the end should be open with a rail.
Concrete and Steel Stadium Terraces
REIDsteel produceS steel formwork to support our in-situ concrete stadium
terraces. REIDsteel produces anti skid steel terraces, hot dip galvanised for long
life. They require much less foundations. The materials are completely
demountable and re-usable. They provide excellent cost effective grandstands for
every use. Facilities underneath may need their own fire protection.
Stadium Flooring Construction

Where hollow core precast concrete
stadium flooring planks are readily
available Precast Planks are good for the
floors of the internal stadium
accommodation. Anti skid galvanised
steel flooring produces the most suitable
flooring. It is lighter and demountable. It
is not easy to waterproof or fire protect if
accommodation is needed underneath.
Steel Vomitories
The material used in the vomitories
and stairs is steel, with infill coated
steel sheeting, and vertical
galvanised steel bars. Handrails have
