People Media

 Refers to persons that are involved in the use, analysis, evaluation and production of media
and information.
 An assembly of people with a common interest where they become the main means of mass
communication.
 People are media themselves since they have the ability for mass communication.

People - human beings making up a group or assembly or linked by a common interest, a body of
persons that are united by a common culture, tradition, or sense of kinship, that typically have
common language, institutions, and beliefs, and that often constitute a politically organized group

Media - the main means of mass communication

1. People as Media (media users) - people who are well-oriented to media sources and messages
and able to provide information as accurate and reliable as possible. They are intermediaries who
provide information to lower-end media users (people with limited access to media and
information). In other words, they are the MEDIA itself as they serve as the medium for another
person to learn or acquire new knowledge.

 highly exposed to and actively using media
 source of viable interpretation of messages for lower-end media users
 opinions are accepted by a group
 stated in the Two-Step Flow Communication Model (1944) by Paul Lazarsfeld,
Bernard Berelson, and Hazel Gaudet

b) Citizen Journalism - people without professional journalism training can use the tools of
modern technology and internet to create, augment or fact-check media on their own or in
collaboration with others
Examples: Facebook Users, Independent Blogger, Classmate
c) Social Journalism - journalists are using social media to make their content available to more
people
Examples: YouTubers
d) Crowdsourcing - the practice of obtaining needed services, ideas, or content by soliciting
contributions from a large group of people and especially from the online community
Examples: TripAdvisor, Waze, Wikipedia

2. People in Media (media practitioners) - provide information coming from their expert knowledge
or first-hand experience of events to the media users. They are the people behind another form of
media by using other forms such as text media, visual media, multimedia, etc. in disseminating
information and imparting knowledge.

d) Multimedia Journalists (e.g. movie director)

 Users - internet users where content is highly user-generated by everyone

IMPORTANCE:

 In every step of the development of technology and other types of media, people media was
present, they made the existence of all types of media possible. They were the transmitters
of information, they were the information sources, before all of the other media was made
available. We, the people media, created every type of media (from text to multimedia and
manipulative, etc.) - and we created them for a reason, to destroy barriers and have a wider
reach, to impart information in an easier and faster way.

CHARACTERISTICS OF PEOPLE MEDIA:

1. Tech savvy - proficient in the use of technology, especially computers.


2. Credible - able to be believed, capable of being believed, plausible. Worthy of confidence;
reliable.
3. Flexible - knows how to use a range of technology; able to change or to do different things.
4. Charismatic - appeals to the senses of different people.
5. Updated - in the know of latest information.
6. Articulate - expressing oneself easily in clear and effective language.

ADVANTAGES OF PEOPLE MEDIA:

1. Flexibility - can correct mistakes last minute (thought-process)


2. Interactive
3. Ability to process the feelings of its media receivers
4. Ability to maintain relationships between sender and receiver
5. Fast feedback between sender and receiver

APPLICATIONS (IN EDUCATION):

 Real time discussions in or outside classrooms


 Both teachers and students can act as media with their interactions
 Reportings, skits, and other educational requirements that will demand students to act as
givers of information (media)

ISSUES INVOLVED:

 Reliability - capable of being relied on; dependable


 Plagiarism - the practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as
one's own
