Article 3: He was conceived by the holy spirit, born of the Virgin Mary

Four Marian Dogma:


 Mary Mother of God
o Council of Ephesus in 431 AD

 Lord “Kyrios” in Greek

 The Immaculate Conception
o Conceived without the original sin
o Pope Pius IX on Dec 8, 1854 with the bull Ineffabilis Deus
o Immaculate in Latin “in and macula” meaning “without stain”
o Celebrated on Dec 8 exactly 9 months before the Nativity of Mary (September 8)
o Errors:
 Mary is immaculate because she was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit.
 Mary is immaculate because she is a virgin.
 Mary is immaculate, therefore she did not need a Savior.

 The assumption

 Paul VI “Mary is Advocate and Mediatrix but refused to add the qualifies of all graces”
 Blessed John Paul II “Co-redemptrix and Mother of the Redeemer but refused any dogmatic
definition”
 Benedict XVI “did not make any official declaration”

Article 4: He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried
Parts: The Mystery of Redemption, The Passion of the Christ

Mystery of Redemption
 Redemption comes from Latin “Redimere” means “to buy back”, by paying the ransom
 Three reason why Jesus chose to suffer and die:
o That we may love God (John 15:13)
o That we may hate sin (1 Corinthians 15:3)
o That we may learn how to suffer (1 Peter 2:21)
 All of us sinners are responsible for the death of Jesus (St. Francis)

Passion of the Christ


 Entry into Jerusalem

o “Hossana to the Son of David”
 Cleansing of the Temple
o Drove out all who were buying and selling
o den of thieves
 Last Supper

Article 5: He descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead

The Descend into the dead


 Before Christ: Netherworld, Purgatory and Hell
 After Christ: Paradise, Purgatory and Hell
 Netherworld (Sheol: Hebrew, Hades:Greek and Inferi:Latin)
o the place where the souls of the just awaited for Christ’s resurrection.
 Hell (Gehenna:Hebrew, Tartarus:Greek and Infernum:Latin)
o the place of eternal damnation for the demons and the wicked souls.
 Greek “Katotata” means Those below
 Latin “Inferos” means The spirit of the underworld literal translation should be: “He descended
into the dead”
 Limbo- alleged place where the should of the unbaptized waited for the Redeemer, was never
defined as a dogma.

Resurrection of Christ
 Jesus rose from the death on Sunday Morning, Three days after his death.
 St Paul “If Christ has not been raised, our faith is useless”
 Resuscitation- is the reunion of the soul with the mortal body, like the rising of Lazarus
 Resurrection- is the reunion of the souls with the glorified body, like the case of Jesus, whose
body was so transfigured that Magdalene did not recognize him

The Sequence of Events after the resurrection


 Resurrection of Christ

o Peter and John arrived at tom and found empty tomb and the burial clothes
