word, its antecedent.

 We usually find the intensive pronoun right

after the noun or pronoun it’s modifying, but not
necessarily.

For example: "I have never yet failed to meet a

deadline I myself have set up."
(Pat Schneider, Writing Alone and With Others. Oxford
University Press, 2003)

 In this example myself is place after the noun,

therefore myself is the intensive pronoun in the
sentence.

Common Intensive Pronouns Common Intensive Pronouns
 Himself Himself
 Herself Herself
 Yourself Yourself
 Themselves Themselves
 Ourselves Ourselves
 Itself Itself
 Myself Myself

 Furthermore, an intensive pronoun may or may

not refer to the subject of the sentence. It can
usually be left out without destroying the
meaning of the sentence. For this reason,
intensive pronouns are sometimes called
emphatic pronouns.

 Another example: "We ourselves feel that

what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean.
But the ocean would be less because of that
missing drop."(Mother Teresa)

 (Will call student) Please underline the "We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a
intensive pronoun in the sentence. drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less
because of that missing drop."(Mother Teresa)
 Very Good! Thank you. Ourselves is the
intensive pronoun in the sentence.
(Student answer may vary.)
 (Will call another student.) What if I remove the
intensive pronoun in the given example, what
will happen?

 Basically, intensive pronoun is not essential in

the meaning of the sentence. It doesn’t matter
if we omit the intensive pronoun in the
sentence because it doesn’t change or affect in
the meaning of the sentence. However serve
the important function of making your writing
more interesting as well as more meaningful,
particularly in formal situations. Use them
sparingly to ensure that the emphasis they
provide isn’t lost.

 Another example: Did you yourself make the

cake?

 The sentence would still make sense if we

removed yourself—“Did you make the cake?”
Therefore, yourself is an intensive pronoun in
this context.

 Do you understand the intensive pronoun?

 Let me know if you really understand our

lesson through this exercises. Underline the
intensive pronoun in the given sentence.

 Jesse wondered aloud whether he himself was  Jesse wondered aloud whether he himself was

the only one seeing what was happening. the only one seeing what was happening.

 Maria knew that she herself could make a  Maria knew that she herself could make a positive

positive impact on the world, if only she put her impact on the world, if only she put her mind to it.

mind to it.  You yourself can easily transform your body: All it
