Cement Baobab

The document discusses different properties of concrete, including setting, hardening, durability, and workability. It then describes the preparation of concrete, where 15 buckets of fine aggregate, 6 bags of cement, 4 wheelbarrows of coarse aggregate, and water were mixed together under a mason's command. Proper preparation is important as it ensures hydration of cement and binding of materials. Cement that has been stored for over 6 months should not be used as it can lose 30% of its strength.

Setting – The process by which watery concrete turns into solid state and,

Hardening - The process by which the weak set solid concrete gains strength.

Durability – A concrete is said to be durable if its resists weather conditions and theirs
effects, chemical attacks and abrasion ( scraping or wearing away) while still remaining
functional, that is, the concrete still possess its set engineering properties.

Workability- A concrete is said to be workable if it is very easy to place and compacted

homogeneously, that it, without bleeding or segregation ( refer to topic…..) Workability
have an effect on labour force and the time of a construction work because working with a
rigid concrete is very hard and difficult to set.

5.2 Preparation of concrete

Under the command of the mason, 15 buckets(20L) of fine aggregate, 6 bags of 25kg
Portland cement, 4 turns of three quarter filled typical wheelbarrow(150L) of coarse
aggregate and drinkable water were mixed together.

Always: use drinkable water and clean fine aggregate for concrete

Reason : It ensures a proper hydration of the cement particles and a good binding between
the fine aggregate and cement particles. It is very important to cover fine and coarse
aggregates on site not only on above but also below against the soil.

Never: use cement which has been stored for more than 6 months.

Why? : It has been estimated that cement loses about 30% of its strength if stored more
than 6 months

1. The first step was to mix only the cement powder and the fine aggregate.
