Web Marketing
INTRODUCTION
Online advertising, also called online marketing or Internet advertising or web advertising, is a
form of marketing and advertising which uses the Internet to deliver promotional marketing
messages to consumers. It includes email marketing, search engine marketing (SEM), social
media marketing, many types of display advertising (including web banner advertising),
and mobile advertising Like other advertising media, online advertising frequently involves both
a publisher, who integrates advertisements into its online content, and an advertiser, who
provides the advertisements to be displayed on the publisher's content. Other potential
participants include advertising agencies who help generate and place the ad copy, an ad
server which technologically delivers the ad and tracks statistics, and advertising affiliates who
do independent promotional work for the advertiser.
In 2011, Internet advertising revenues in the United States surpassed those of cable
television and nearly exceeded those of broadcast television In 2013, Internet advertising
revenues in the United States totaled $42.8 billion, a 17% increase over the $36.57 billion in
revenues in 2012.[2]:4–5 U.S. internet ad revenue hit a historic high of $20.1 billion for the first
half of 2013, up 18% over the same period in 2012. Online advertising is widely used across
virtually all industry sectors.[1:16
Internet marketing is like digging a gold mine. 97% people focus on 99% dirt and keep
complaining. 3% people focus on 1% gold and keep it collecting.
Marketing is carried out with the intent of reaching out to a maximum number of people in
exchange of minimum cost. When Internet was still in its formative years, marketing people used
to depend on traditional media such as television, radio, handbills, billboards, newspapers, and
magazines.
11
Today, the Internet is premium source for promoting your business. There has been a rapid rise
in the number of internet users since last few years. Thus Internet is the lucrative place to
promote the business.
WEB ADVERTISING
Online advertising is a marketing strategy that involves the use of the Internet as a medium to
obtain website traffic and target and deliver marketing messages to the right customers. Online
advertising is geared toward defining markets through unique and useful applications.
Since the early 1990s there has been an exponential increase in the growth of online advertising,
which has evolved into a standard for small and large organizations.
12
ONLINE MARKETING
A major advantage of online advertising is the quick promotion of product information without
geographical boundary limits. A major challenge is the evolving field of interactive advertising,
which poses new challenges for online advertisers.
Online advertisements are purchased through one of the following common vehicles:
Cost per Thousand (CPM): Advertisers pay when their messages are exposed to specific
audiences.
Cost per Click (CPC): Advertisers pay every time a user clicks on their ads.
Cost per Action (CPA): Advertisers only pay when a specific action (generally a
purchase) is performed.
Examples of online advertising include banner ads, search engine results pages, social
networking ads, email spam, online classified ads, pop-ups, contextual ads and spyware.
What is marketing?
As defined by the American Marketing Association, “marketing is the activity, set of institutions
and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offers that have value for
customers, clients, partners, and society at large”.
Marketing changes the perspective of a person. There are two approaches of marketing −
Traditional marketing
Online marketing
13
WHAT IS ONLINE MARKETING?
Online marketing is advertising and marketing the products or services of a business over
Internet. Online marketing relies upon websites or emails to reach to the users and it is combined
with e-commerce to facilitate the business transactions. In online marketing, you can promote the
products and services via websites, blogs, email, social media, forums, and mobile Apps.
Online marketing is also termed as Internet marketing, Web marketing, or simply, OLM.
The goal of traditional marketing and online marketing are same − to attract and drive visitors
of advertise to buy the product thereby increasing the business profit. Let us see the difference
between two approaches now −
14
Traditional Marketing Online Marketing
It is difficult to measure. You cannot know how It is measurable. You can know the number of
many people read your advertise and how many people who viewed the online advertise, and
took favorable action upon viewing it. the number of ones who purchased the
product.
It is not so good for brand building. It is fast and efficient for brand building.
In some way, it interrupts regular activities of users It is not interrupting. The user can attend
such as television advertises interrupt the program online advertises as per his/her convenience
you are watching, billboards divert focus of the and preferences.
driver, etc.
It may leave users’ queries unanswered as printing It can provide maximum information about the
or narrating complete information about the product product or service, offers, and transactions.
or service may not be always feasible.
Online marketing is widely practiced strategy of advertising or promoting sales and name of the
business. Wise use of the online marketing strategies can take the business to unprecedented
levels of success.
15
Here in this tutorial, we will provide an insight into each of these components one by one in
detail.
Market Research
Business organizations need to set clear objectives and strong market understanding. To
research the market, you can −
Identify the customers’ pain points that they post on various platforms such as yahoo
answers, blogs, social media, and other sites.
Anticipate and compile a list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) with their clear answers
and align them to customers’ pain points.
16
Include the fact sheet about product if required.
Keyword Research
Choosing a correct and relevant set of keywords can help design a crisp and persuasive
advertise for online marketing. Before accessing any keyword research tool, ask yourself −
Have I clearly answered all the pain points that users might look for on this page?
Which phrases the users might enter while looking for a solution?
Mapping the right keywords around the users’ pain points in a hierarchical manner makes an
effective website. You need to categorize the keywords in a thematic order and then link the
respective articles to the keywords. This makes the website easy maintain.
Web Analytics
The ultimate goal of analytics is to identify actionable insights on monthly basis which can help
to make favorable changes to the website gradually. This in turn ultimately leads to strong
profits in long term.
Online Advertising
It is placing crisp, simple, and tempting Ads on the websites to attract the viewers’ attention and
developing viewers’ interest in the product or service.
17
Mobile Advertising
It is creating awareness about the business and promoting it on smart phones that people carry
with them inseparably.
It is the activity of optimizing web pages or complete website in order to make them search
engine friendly, thus getting higher position in the search results. It contributes to overall
rankings of the keywords through influencing factors such as appropriate titles, Meta
descriptions, website speed, links, etc.
It includes creating profiles of your brand on social media platforms such as Google Plus,
LinkedIn, Pinterest, Twitter, Facebook, etc. It assures that you remain connected to the existing
or potential customers, build awareness about the products and services, create interest in and
desire to buy your product, and interact with the customers on their own terms and convenience.
Email Marketing
You can interact with the customers to answer their queries using automatic responders and
enhance the customer experience with your website.
You can offer the options such as signing-in to subscribe to your newsletter. You can make the
emails catchy and crisp, so that they don’t makerecipients annoyed. Also, you can use selected
best words in the subject line to boost the open rate.
18
Content Marketing
It includes creation and sharing of media and publishing the content in order to acquire and
retain customers.
Blogs
Blogs are web pages created by an individual or a group of individuals. They are updated on a
regular basis. You can write blogs for business promotion.
Banners
Banners are long strips of cloth with a slogan or design. They are carried for demonstration,
procession, or hung in a public place. There are internet banners in parallel to tangible banners
for advertising.
Internet Forums
They are nothing but message boards of online discussion websites, where people posts
messages and engage into conversation.
1. Online display advertising does not really replace traditional methods of advertising, it
completes the branding circle. The Internet with its billions of users around the world has
huge potentials to open new opportunities for businesses to grow and expand.
2. Online display advertising can be as short as it is necessary. It costs less and can also give
you the opportunity to control and make changes in your campaign based on the
performance of the ads.
3. Capturing the market through remarketing/retargeting. Do you want another run to get a
second or a third chance to capture a target market? Your target market may not be
19
converted the first time they see your banner ads; that happens quite often. Display
advertising through remarketing are a great way to remind them of your product/service
that offers a solution to a need or problem. Maybe a second visit is necessary to convert
them.
4. Look like a big fish and gain trust. You want your target market to trust your brand. That
happens when they see you have enough going for you and that not delivering your
claims can mar their brand. Being a big player carries with it the connotation of
credibility and reliability, traits that are not so easily achieved in online marketing.
5. Entice your target by knowing their interests. If you know your target demographics, you
would understand their interests and what can captivate them. Use the knowledge to
design your display ads to entice and grab their attention
6. Get the ads featured on relevant sites. Your knowledge of the interests of your typical
customer can take you further to include the knowledge of the websites that they usually
visit or content that they read.
7. Use complete transparency to your advantage. Having the ability to track or getting
feedback from your ads is critical. Other advertising forms can be hard to track;
using display ads can let you in on a weekly even daily updates.
8. Take advantage of A/B split testing. What constitutes a better strategy? Sometimes it is
hard to say even when you understand your market. This is why having control in your
advertising is good.
9. Enjoy lower marketing cost. Online display advertising is not at all expensive; tri-media
and use of billboards typically cost more.
10. Online display advertising campaigns are great strategies that can improve the visibility
of your product and brand. It is an efficient way that can help you adapt with the demands
of the times and to evolve an effective marketing plan and strategy.
20
Advantages of web marketing
1. Convenience And Quick Service
The incredible convenience of marketing online is one of the biggest advantages of internet
marketing. The internet has extremely easy accessibility with consumers using the internet and
reaching markets anywhere in the world. Because of this, purchasing goods from across borders
now reduces the cost of transportation.
4. Demographic Targeting
Have you ever wondered why more than 90% of users who visit a website do not necessarily get
converted into customers? Mass marketing is the answer to this. Also, the ongoing debate about
using online marketing strategies optimally and the huge list of online marketing advantages and
disadvantages need to be looked into.
5. Global Marketing
The ability to market your products and services across countries is one of the biggest
advantages of global marketing for business. Within several months of following aggressive
SEO techniques, you can expect a huge number of hits your website, secure millions of viewers
and reach audiences from across the world.
6. Ability To Multitask
One of the core benefits of online marketing is its ability to handle millions of customers at the
same time. This is also the reason why it is important for you to optimize your website to make it
device-friendly. It must be built to ensure that is accessible through any device, be it a notebook,
smartphone, or a laptop. As long as a website’s infrastructure is efficient, numerous transactions
can take place seamlessly and simultaneously.
21
7. 24/7 Marketing
Internet marketing reduces cost and runs around the clock. That means that your marketing
campaigns run for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Compared to traditional marketing, internet
marketing does not have any limitations in terms of opening or closing hours. At the same time,
you would not have to worry about overtime pay for your staff.
22
12. Instant Transaction Service
Executing transactions is easy and nearly instant online. You can do this through a digital
payment service so that there is no need for a cash transaction to go between the marketer and
the customer to buy and sell merchandise. This is all possible due to payment processing
solutions executed by third-party payment processing companies such as PayPal.
23
Like any other forms of business strategies, internet marketing has some disadvantages as
well.
24
CHAPTER 3
25
SCOPE
There is a broad WEB Marketing scope at present as the digital media is the new media that
works with the help of internet and has proved to be the fastest medium of mass communication.

CHAPTER -6
44
Findings
1. Using web marketing without a strategic approach is still commonplace. I'm sure many of the
companies in this category are using digital media effectively and they could certainly be getting
great results from their search, email or social media marketing.
3. It's often said that digital is the "most measurable medium ever".
4. If you look at the top online brands like Amazon, Dell, Google, Tesco, Zappos, they're all
dynamic - trialing new approaches to gain or keep their online audiences.
Suggestions
1. Online marketing is more than just signing up for social media and creating a website
(although those are two important aspects of it!).
2. It’s also a great way to promote your business without breaking the bank and can be easily
measured.
3. Write strong calls to action for your search ads that directly state what you want consumers to
do. For example “Contact for a Free Estimate or “Get a 50% Coupon.”
4. Web marketing should be done to create awareness in customers.
5 .The share on online advertising comes from doing different advertisements.
