Plastic Pollution on Marine

Life and Environment

Yasmin Mahamud
People should stop using plastic
1. Plastic ends up in the ocean.
2. In 2050 there will be 6.3 million tons more plastic in the ocean than fish and it will double.
3. 30 million pounds of plastic have been collected and 7% has been recycled, the rest ends up
at the ocean.
4. It has a huge effect on the animals in the sea.
5. Plastic bags are not biodegradable.
6. Landfill takes up the land because they do not get proper recycling.
Plastic’s Effects on Marine life
Plastic pollution affects our marine life in so many different ways. Plastic bags are a major problem to our marine life. We
use them for groceries because they are helpful. Turtles and seabirds mistake plastic bags for food and most of the animals
die from it. According to (Hamann, 2005), turtles main food is jellyfish but they mistake plastic bags for jellyfish and that
causes them to die or choke. The chance of a turtle to getting help for ingesting plastic is very low, some of them may be
lucky and some may not.Us humans love to eat fish, but how can we eat a fish that have eaten plastic; this is unhealthy for
the humans and the fish.
Plastic’s Effects on Environment and Human
health
Environment

1. Plastic bags are made out of petroleum products.

2. Plastic bags are not biodegradable.
3. Plastic blocks the draining system.

Human Health

4. Foods that are stored in plastic containers have chemicals and cause people to ingest Bisphenol-A(BPA).
5. In America 93% of the population test positive from the age of six years and older.
6. Plastic bag chemicals can give animals cancer and they can also affect women’s hormones.

All of these effects, and we still continue to use plastic. The number of BPA in people testing positive for it is large
and at younger ages, to have that is very disturbing. According to Earth Eclipse, plastic bags are made from a variety
of 60 to 100 million oils, which is why oil prices go up everyday.
Total Amount of Plastic Recycled and
Collected

This is a graph that was created

in 2015, which shows 8.3 billion
metric tons of plastics, 6.3
billion tons of which has become
waste. The total waste had only 9
percent recycled, 12 percent was
incinerated and 79 percent
accumulated in landfills in our
environment. The data they used
was from 1950 to 2015.
Countries that Ban plastic and Charge Taxes
1. In Africa, they care about the environment and they take it very seriously and South Africa was the first country in
Africa to ban plastic in 2003. They were seeing plastic bags, and bottles. Now, there is fifteen countries that have
followed the ban and those are: Botswana, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Morocco, Tanzania, and
Uganda.
2. In 2008, the Olympic that took place in China put a ban on plastic bags and started to charge people. The ban in
China reduced plastic bag use and other countries in Asia developed the same rule, and those countries are
Bangladesh, Cambodia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Taiwan.
3. Europe is a very big plastic user, and in 1994 Denmark was the first country to charge taxes on it. Soon other
countries saw the drastic change of plastic use and now the countries that charge taxes are England, Italy, Ireland, and
Germany.
4. America did not put a ban on plastic but if we did we would have clean oceans and our animals in the sea would all
be alive. It is good to see countries in Africa that care about their environment and people’s health.
Solution To Stop Using Plastic
1. Use reusable bags when going grocery shopping.

2. Purchase foods in bulk, or use a reusable container to fill up on goods.

3. Stop using plastic straws and purchase a medal one and when going to restaurants to use it.

4. To stop buying bottled water or reuse the bottle and recycle properly.

5. Buying coffee with your own mug.

6. Investing in a water filter, because that will help reduce plastic waste.

7. Shopping at farmers market because there is no plastic bags.
