CANCER HOSPITAL WITH REHABILITATION CENTRE
(HEALING ARCHITECTURE)
ABSTRACT
There is a famous saying expressing the effect of architecture and our surroundings ,i.e
“We shape our buildings and later they shape us”. The intent of my thesis is to explore how
the architecture can inform healing or provide spaces and events where healing can take
place . we as human beings have an inner connection with our environment by physical ,
mental , emotional, and spiritual means. Healing cannot be understood in isolation from the
factors that operate in the dynamic life of an individual . These include the self the family the
community the environmental context within which life is carried forth and the world of spirit
or essence. Furthermore ,the arts and the art therapy have over the years been used to
different aliments such as cancer , mental illness , aids , addictions and elderly have been
successful in doing so as it heals across all ages and race . the question I pose is can
architecture do the same ?besides can architecture plays a superior role in healing ? in our
built environment we often interact with the buildings themselves without knowing the fact
relationship between building and surroundings . how could it helps the patient to cure from
his /her illness physically and mentally in this I would like to summarize the principals of
life enhancing role of architecture and planning in the healing process.

WHAT TO DO?
Now a days cancer is one of the killing disease not only physically it also kills the
people mentally too. Even though the cancer was cured but the people are suffering with the
fear of questions or in the dilemma of either the cancer is completely cured or its going
attack again. In this journey of them they need a strength mentally through the rehabilitation
centres which helps them curing mentally and clearing their minds with unwanted questions
and dilemma. “Hospitals” in my experience the word hospital itself moves us to the dilemma
of fear just because of it built environment and situations and the scenario. By this I could
sense that there is an psychological impact on the build environment. To get rid of this
psychological stress I propose to re humanize the hospital into a healing environment. The
power of architecture can be better utilized in the development of hospitals ‘life enhancing’
architecture as to address all the senses simultaneously and fuse our image of self with our
experience of the world.

WHERE TO DO?
I was in thought of designing the hospital for the cancer patients and along with
the rehabilitation centre for them .which is the process of curing physically and mentally.
There is proposal in cochin for the cancer hospital . I would like to take that proposal in
cochin as my site.

HOW TO DO?
I would like to make a detail study of the suitable built environment of the
hospital and the major design aspects and connectivity of spaces and the functioning and
spatial composition or organising of spaces through some of the literature , case studies
desktop studies. Analysis of the healing spaces and how does it impacts the people either in a
physical way or mental way and I would like to enhance the smooth and efficient running of
healthcare facilities by the provisions of recommendations on creating a comfortable health
care environment. I would like to create the architectural healing spaces considering some of
the deign considerations like orientation , proximity of spaces , open spaces ,spaces of
interactions , access to nature , qualitative daylighting , air quality , normalcy ,human
comfort, positive distractions , dignified environment.

SCOPE:
The scope and the intention behind the design concept healing architecture is, as described,
not a new way of thinking, but is rather a continuation of earlier assumptions that the
surrounding environment, daylight, nature views and access, etc., had a healing affect on
patients. This may focus on recovery of the patient which reduces the rehabilitation time
which in turn reduces the stay time in hospitals. The research intends to change the mind of
the designer and improve the designing techniques used by the architect in designing a
hospital.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES:
 Providing and comfortable , economical and user friendly healing environment to the
people of the district
 Patient oriented design strategy
 Including the elements of healing architecture.
 Application of green ideas into the hospital design.
 Understating the complexities of the hospital design.
 Understanding the functioning of the various departments of hospital and their co-
relation with each other
 Circulation patterns
 Understating the components of healing environment which will enhance the healing
the character of the hospital
