Oracle Kanban Planning

Definition:
 Kanban means “visible record” or “visible part”. In general context, it refers to a signal of some
kind. Thus, in the manufacturing environment, kanbans are signals used to replenish the
inventory of items used repetitively within a facility. The kanban system is based on a customer
of a part pulling the part from the supplier of that part. The customer of the part can be an
actual consumer of a finished product (external) or the production personnel at the succeeding
station in a manufacturing facility (internal). Likewise, the supplier could be the person at the
preceding station in a manufacturing facility. The premise of kanbans is that material will not be
produced or moved until a customer sends the signal to do so.
Different Supply Status while processing Kanban Planning
 New: kanban just created and not yet part of replenishment chain
 Empty: kanban is empty and replenishment signal has been generated - impacts Inter-Org and
Supplier source types
 Full: kanban has been replenished and material is available for use
 Wait: kanban is waiting for minimum order quantity to be met by the aggregation of cards.
 Inprocess: For the Supplier source type, PO has been approved. For Inter-Org source type,
internal requisition has been approved
Let’s start by creating an item:
Navigation : Item-> Master Item
 Here I have created an

 Item : Basket
 List Price : $15
 Template : Purchased
Assigned to inventory
Navigate to Kanban > Pull Sequences > New
And provide the details as below.
 Card is like container, in this instance I have defined the card value as 2 which means there are
two containers and each will have 150 items in it.
 Lets add one more row as below.
 Now we have to generate cards, cards can be generated in two ways manually and
automatically.
 Lets generate the card for the first row automatically and the second one manually.
 Select the first row and click on Generate Tab
 Click on yes
 Once the cards are generated, click on Cards Tab to see the card sequence.
 Here the supply status is New
 Now lets generate card for the second line manually, so close this form and select the second
line, click on cards.
 Give number manually as shown below and save the page.
 The supply status is new here as well.
 Lets close this form and select the first line and click on cards. Here we have replenish the items,
click on Replenish Tab, so that requisition interface table is populated.
 Now we can view the Supply status has changed to Empty
 Now switch the responsibility to purchasing and Run the Requisition Import Program
 View>Request>Submit a New Request
 Now we can check the new requisition created
 Purchasing>Requisitions>Requisition Summary
 Lets convert the Requisition into Purchase Order.

 Navigation: Purchase Orders > Auto create
 Provide the Requisition Number and click on find create the Purchase Order
 Now switch the responsibility to Inventory & lets check the status of the card
 Inventory> Kanban> Kanban Cards
 We see the card number 10491 supply status is In Process
 Lets receive the goods to sub inventory which are arrived.
 Query by PO # and take the receipt.
 Now lets check the Supply Status from Kanban Cards.
 Navigation: Inventory> Kanban> Kanban Cards
 The status of the card is now full.
 Now the goods are in subinventory and staging Sub inventory needs the goods.
 Navigation: Inventory Responsibility > Kanban > Pull Sequences
 Click on cards
 Click on Replenish
 Once we Replenish, the card status will change to empty.
 Which means a new move order is created.
 Navigate to Move Orders> Move Orders
 Here we can view the move order is created and Move order type is Replenishment
 Transact the move order and we can view the supply status of card is Full whereas the 10491
changed back to empty.
Conclusion:
 Kanbans serve many purposes. They act as communication devices from the point of use to the
previous operation and as visual communication tools. They act as purchase orders for our
suppliers and work orders for the production departments, thereby eliminating much of the
paperwork that would otherwise be required. In addition, kanbans reinforce other
manufacturing objectives such as increasing responsibility of the machine operator and allowing
for proactive action on quality defects. However, kanbans should not be used when lot
production or safety stock is required because the kanban system will not account for these
requirements.
