Love Simon
Question: The last statement of the story: “Everyone deserves a great love story”. Write an
essay of about 500 words to analyse the climax and the resolution (falling actions) to prove
that Simon deserves.
Essay:
Just ten years ago, a typical romantic movie for teenagers would revolve around the journey to
find true love of girls and boys, as was illustrated in the famous 10 Things I Hate About You, The
Princess Diaries or High School Musical. If there were any representation of homosexuality, it
would usually for making fun. With the wave of LGBTQ right movement, however, things are
changing in the cinematic world. One outstanding example is the recently released ‘Love, Simon’,
a story of ordinary gay folks looking for love. In a simple but attractive way, the movie proves
that, like it states in the end, “Everyone deserves a great love story”.
Simon, the protagonist, is a 16-year-old boy leading a seemingly normal life. He lives with his
parents and younger sister in an Atlanta suburb. His mother is a mental therapist, while his dad
is a jovial guy. At school, Simon has a close-knit crew: childhood bestie Leah, soccer player Nick,
and the new girl Abby. But as Simon tells us via voiceover in the opening minutes, “I’m just like
you, except I have one huge-ass secret,” this is not another cheesy old school love story.
Love, Simon’s plot thickens with the appearance of an anonymous blog post in which a student
reveals, under the name “Blue,” that he is gay. Hungry for a sense of solidarity and connection,
Simon creates a new email address and replies under the name Jacques. Here begins a kind of
epistolary friendship between the two young men who share their yearnings and stressfulness of
keeping their true gender a secret in confessional notes. Simon soon sets about trying to figure
out whom he has been communicating with. But when one classmate, Martin discovers his
secret, he blackmails Simon into helping him win Abby’s heart. Things get complicated since Nick
also has a crush on Abby, Leah may be nursing feelings for Simon, and Simon still does not know
the identity of the boy he is in the process of falling in love with.
The movie reaches its climax when Martin reveals screenshots of the emails between Simon and
‘Blue’ after his tragically failing love confession to Abby. Simon is extremely confused and
stressed out when his coming-out does not go as planned. Things even aggravate when his closest
friends figure out Simon’s lies in an effort to help Martin sneaks in between Nick and Abby. But
the last thing Simon wants, that Blue permanently ends their email conversation after knowing
Simon’s identity, puts Simon in his worst status quo. Fortunately, Simon finally puts a brave face
and posts an official coming-out letter on his school’s forum, together with inviting Blue for a
“date”. This action helps him explain to his friends the lies he told, the hardship he has been
through while keeping his true self a secret from even his most loved ones. The audience’s hearts
and breaths must have been so grasped as Simon reaches his final ride in the sun wheel but Blue
still yet to come. However, as “everyone deserves a great love story”, to Simon’s surprise, Bram,
who was one of Simon’s suspects but was soon ruled out, shows up and kisses him, revealing
himself to be Blue. This is not only a happy ending for Simon, but also for Bram, who had been
struggling with publicly coming out.
Coming out is never an easy task, especially for young adults. Surrounding them are stereotypes
by the society, and the deep fear that their loved ones will look at them in a different way. How
brave Simon has been to kiss his man in front of hundreds of curious eyes, and because of that
bravery, he deserves the sweet love with Bram.
