Role of Shakuni
Shakuni was the strategist and acting key person of The Dice Game or Dyut Krida.
He played the role of a cunning, trickster who was the root of all disaster and
humiliation that all the Pandavas faced. He planned with Duryodhana the downfall
of Yudhishthira through the game of dice. Shakuni conceived as interminable evil,
had a smooth sailing because of the contemporary social moral code and the
structures of power at the time. Yudhishthira had to obey Dhritarashtra’s word, as
father’s word is law unto him. Once Yudhishthira had agreed to the proxy game, he
had to honour his word at all costs. Shakuni said: “When we sow out the dice, let
there be a covenant to the game.” Yudhishthira sayd:”Gaming is trickery, an evil,
there is no baronial prowess in it, nor steady policy, prince. Why do you praise
dicing? For no one praises as proud a gambler’s trickery; Shakuni don’t defeat us by
crooked means and cruelty.” But Shakuni was all determined to use trickery of his
crooked game to defeat him. The game started and at every stake Shakuni decided,
tricked and cried, “Won”!
Shakuni played the dice and manipulated Yuddhishtira to gamble each & everything
including Draupadi. Shakuni was master of Chausar and throwing dices. He threw
dices and played in such a way that Yuddhishtira won't win any single bet. Shakuni
made Yuddhishtira fall in his words and game, such that Yuddhishtira did not think
about consequences of anything he was doing. When Yuddhishtira lost a bet,
Shakuni & Duryodhana suggested him what he could bet next. When Yuddhishtira
lost all his money & kingdom, they suggested him to put his brothers on stake,
when he lost his brothers, they suggested him to bet Draupadi.
Yuddhishtira thought that he would win this time and would free all his brothers and
his kingdom, he never thought about the consequences of betting Draupadi. As he
was in such a state that he was only thinking of “Winning a bet to win everything
back”. Now, Duryodhana & Karna committed a blunder. If Duryodhana and Karna
had not disrobed and humiliated Draupadi, Dhritrashtra would not had to return
kingdom or free Pandavs, and Duryodhana would have ruled Earth for whole life
with Pandavs & Draupadi as slaves.
Dhritarastra sent orders to Yuddhishtira to come back and have a dice game.
Shakuni won this game too. Now, Shakuni got what he wanted - 13 years exile to
Pandavas & Draupadi, and kingdoms of Pandavas for Duryodhana. It was all Shakuni
who was playing from both sides in dice game, only thing he lost is due to stupidity
of Duryodhana, Karna & Dushasana. But he won that again, with a condition.
