CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEMS AND ITS SCOPE

Rationale of the study

Mobile phone is a device which has affected our social contacts, education

system, safety, business activities and many other aspects of life (Ling, 2003) .It is one

of the popular ways of how the students study. Nowadays, mobile phones could be

found everywhere. It is the common ways in communication, gathering information,

widening any kinds of businesses and providing learning resources towards the

students. But until now people are still arguing whether it is more of an advantage or a

disadvantage. Then it has been argued that the future of mobile communication will rely

on mobile services (Carlsson et al., 2006). One of the advantage of mobile phones are

considered the quickest means of communication in daily life, can contact easily with

our friends and our relative wherever by calling or sending messages ,a means of

entertainment for people, can listen to music and play games on mobile phone.

Moreover, by using the latest apps for smartphones, can access to the internet to watch

Film and check profile in social networks and update status wherever using mobile
phone. If we have a smartphone in hand, the studies will become more effective such as

look up dictionary, find out many sources of reference on internet which is useful for

study. On the other hand, one of the major disadvantages of this is the easy access of

the people towards certain sites that could encourage immorality like porn sites.

According to (Rappler), “The Philippines has the highest average visit duration

worldwide”. The telephone user become to addict their mobile phone if they are too

depends on it, people only focus on their phone without communicating.

The students in Marigondon National High School are not exempted with

these cases. It is the specialized aspects of the particular fields of endeavor in today’s

generation mobile phone is unique, useful and powerful because some students are

using this for bad purposes that may affect student mindset. The researchers know

student know that the behavior of our fellow students and the factors that brings

negative effect of the students in their studies are the following (1) gaming (2)

pornography (3) cheating during major examination (4) too much using of social medias

that can lead laziness of the studies also they can find troubles (5) passing of

information and etc.

Mobile phone can easily be overused within the classroom, and this can

cause negative effects on the entire learning experience. Some of these effects are
already seen from student texting and internet usage (school-related and trivial) during

class. There are also increased incidences of plagiarism for assignments and an overall

lack of respect for correct language usage within essays. This indicates the effect that

mobile phone may have had on the current generation’s thinking abilities and the

overall power of the internet.

However, mobile phone is a device that can basically make and receive

calls over a radio link while moving around a wide geographic area. (Pew Research

center, 2010). It does so by connecting to a cellular network provided by a mobile

phone operator, allowing access to the public telephone network. The ancient types of

mobile phones support limited services such as, calling, sending and very few for taking

pictures. However, the modern phones support very wide range variety of other services

apart from making and receive calls. These include; text messaging, MMS, email,

internet access, short range wireless communications (Infrared, blue tooth, file transfer

Protocol, (FTP), business applications, gaming and photography. It is hard to say if this

is a good thing or a bad thing in the future especially with the universal availability of

the internet. The students of the future prioritize where the information can be found

(i.e. via Google) rather than what the information actually is. The constant simulation

that comes from the internet has also taken away the ability of students to generally
focus in the classroom. Article showed how constant simulation by email, text,

messages, and online video games created a profound obstacle to the focus and

productivity of both young people and adults, all of which can also be used in E-

Learning purposes. This stimulation causes a short attention span, and even without the

internet as a distraction, many young people struggle as is to manage time wisely and

resist impulsive behavior. There is some of the students didn’t listen to their teachers

because they believe that they can search on the google or on the other social media all

the answers that they need/needed. That’s why many of the students got a failing grades

because they are not focusing on their studies but on mobile phone.

This research can be highly important and informative not just to the

students in Marigondon National High School but also in the other schools.

Theoretical Background

Mobile phones have become an almost essential part of daily life since their rapid

growth in popularity. It has virtually affected the society’s accessibility, security, safety

and coordination of business and social activities and has hence become a part of

culture of the whole world. The traditional agents of socialization are families and

schools. With the expansion of educational system as a result of the need for

highly skilled workers lead to the school system taking increasing larger
responsibilities in socialization . Surprisingly, research on the influence of mobile

phone on our school today has not been given much attention. There is the conflicting

priority of young people, parents and teachers in relation to the mobile phone device,

with teachers more concerned about issues such as discipline in the classroom and

parents worried about means of contacting their children at every point in time.

According to majority of research done so far, it was discovered that the use of

mobile phone in schools is problematic. As Ling and Helmersen states, the mobile

phone is ―at cross purpose with the mission of the school‖. While in school students

are supposed take on their prescribed roles as student with full concentration on their

studies and free from contact with the outside world. However, the mobile phone

gives room to blending students’ roles with other roles thus distracting and

disrupting the students’ academic work. In the past when fixed telephones were the

norm in schools, there were minimum distractions and disruptions but presently

with the invasion of mobile phone and the eagerness of parents to maintain contact

with their wards, the device is becoming part of the classroom. Thus, the mobile

phone has the power to undermine the schools’ authority and weaken their control

over students as well as affects their level of academic performances .

The Ancient Type of Mobile phone

Source: Olanrewaju (2004) Field Work.Mobile phone is one of the most rapidly

growing new technologies in the world (Rebell, 2010). In 2001, cell phone users were

less than a billion worldwide with the majority of the users from the developed

countries. By the end of 2010, however, mobile phone users had reached five billion

worldwide with subscriptions from developing countries outnumbering that of the

developed countries (Belly, 2003) Rebello, 2010). Obviously, this increase includes a

sharp increase in the number of cellphones used by the younger generations.

Other Ancient Types of mobile Phones

Source: Olanrewaju (2014) Field Work. However, in recent years, different types of

mobile phones have been produced by different phone manufacturers. Each comes with

different features for different specific function(s). We have different variety of mobile

phones as named by their manufacturers, they include, Nokia, Samsung, Motorola,

Sagem, Sendo, Siemens,T-mobile, Thuraya, Nodafone, Sony ericsson, bluebird, alcatel,

blackberry, and so on. Be now have those that can make video calling, ping, take

clearer pictures photographs, surf the internet and lots more. They are also built

installed in with different capacities, mode of operation and features applications.

THEPROBLEM

Statement of the Problem

The study aims to determine that mobile phone affect the academic

performance of the students in Marigondon National High School. It aims to answer the
