iv
Executive Summary

This report is prepared based on my three-month practical experience at Apex Footwear

Limited. Apex Footwear Limited is a manufacturing company that deals with both
manufacturing unit and retail unit and these two units need to maintain a strong internal
communication to ensure an effective operation. As there are many shoe brands in the local
market and they are also providing good quality products to their customers, Apex Footwear
Ltd. needs to ensure a strong position in the market by providing extra-ordinary services and
maintaining a good relationship with their customers. The workforce of Apex will
undoubtedly perform their level best if their basic requirements are communicated to the
upper level. Here, the internal communication plays an extensive role. The leather, leather
goods and footwear industry has become second highest foreign exchange earning export
sector in Bangladesh and Bangladesh has been positioned 8th in the footwear sector all over
the world according to World Footwear Yearbook 2017. The footwear industry in
Bangladesh is one of the quickest developing sectors. Apex Footwear Limited is the one that
earned 6th position and Apex Leather Craft Fashion and Accessories Ltd. has earned the 7th
position among the Bangladeshi footwear industries. As the supply chain of the industry is
lengthy and there is no fastest communication channel these industries are facing cumulative
challenge in the domestic and international market. Market demand of the product is also
changing rapidly. Unless a firm communication channel is introduced, it will no longer be
able to sustain in the dynamic market.

The report has chiefly covered the background of the footwear industry, it’s various
Departments, functions and their performance analysis which evaluates the communication
process and gap compared to the other industries. This report is a culmination of the
experience gathered during the internship period. It granted me a big opportunity to
Practically learn about HR activities. It also provides the opportunity to analyze their Annual
Report for the year of 2018-19.

Introduction of Footwear industry:
The Footwear Industry has entered Bangladesh since the colonial era, but its modernization
took place in the late 1980s (RMG Bangladesh, 2017). Bangladesh has already stepped into
the next manufacturing hub for the global footwear industry. The leather goods market in
Bangladesh has huge potential with the increasing disposable income of the middle and upper
middle class families. The GDP growth at over 5% over the last decade shows the strength of
the economy and its resilience. Strong export growth despite the global recession shows the
competitive advantage of the entire industry' thanks to mostly the availability of the superior
quality raw materials and cheap labor.

Overview of Organization:
The journey of Apex Footwear Limited started more than two decades ago, the main
inspiration was leather business & later curving. Then it entered into shoemaking. Today it
has become the largest shoemaker in the subcontinent, Apex Footwear Limited holds its 15%
share of leather footwear export in Bangladesh from $1.1 billion leather export. Shoemaking
represents a highly labor intensive job and in Bangladesh cheap labor force can be managed
easily. Apex Footwear Limited is home to 5500 workers which includes mostly women in the
shoe manufacturing. Apex follows the latest international footwear trend. The core values are
set with the belief of valuing people through continuous development & making a path for
higher achievements.

Operating since 1990, Apex is a leading ODM (original design manufacturer) footwear
manufacturer that offers private label as well as branded footwear solutions to major retailers
and brands globally.

Apex is built on their core strengths of leather development, best in class Italian product
design and development capabilities, integrated, vertical and sustainable manufacturing and
most importantly a team more than 13000 dedicated members.

Apex launched its domestic retail, distribution and branding business in 2007 which led to
the creation of our in-house contemporary brands- Apex, Venturini, Mouchie, Nino- Rossi,
Maverick, Sprint, Twinkler and School Smart. These brands are all designed in-house and
have quickly developed a loyal following in the Bangladeshi market.

1
The leather and footwear industry in Bangladesh has ranked the 2nd highest foreign exchange
earning export sector reaching almost USD 1.5 billion in last financial year including
significant value addition and employment generation. The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics
(2016) shows that the domestic footwear market is valued at approximately USD 2 billion
and there is big opportunity to grow in our local market consistently. AFL was able to
generate almost 13% growth in its export sales revenue 2017-18 though the market condition
was highly challenging. A combination of improved product design and development
capability, intense marketing efforts helps to avoid the large drops in exports. AFL export
growth continues to be depressed by lack of world class local supply chain for the footwear
industry. Competitors in neighboring countries are able to turn around much faster their
export orders due to in country supply chain and also faster transit it their key markets and
suppliers. AFL is ensuring 12% growth in the domestic market last year. Leather shoes are
under threat globally as the demand of the market changes rapidly and there are a lot of
varieties in the market to satisfy customer’s demand. For 2018-19 the main concern of AFL
are as follows:
1. Investing more in training and human resource development
2. Strengthen production team
3. Improve margin recovery
4. Reduce cost and process loss
5. Boost productivity
6. Strengthen quality management team and system
7. Become more customer centric
8. Continue to move towards higher design content and sustainability
9. Improve supply chain management to reduce inventory levels at all stages
10. Improve capacity utilization

AFL milestones since July 2017 are as follows:

1. The company achieved “Alliance Standard” in workplace safety.
2. The company’s tannery unit achieved the ISO 9001: 2015 certification which reflects
the standard in quality management system of the company
3. The company achieved Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production (WRAP) Gold
Certificate of Compliance
4. The Company entered into a strategic partnership with “zLabels” largest German
a. e-commerce Company.

Learning Experience:
Knowledge Acquired:
In my intern period I have learn so many things, and I am grateful to all so that all people
help me a lot at my intern session. In my intern I start work with Accounts and HR
department. Along with work learned a lot about organizational environment and corporate
culture during my internship period.

Skill learned:
During my working time in Apex footwear, I learned how to write an employee account
opening form, documents required for opening new employee account. File fill up and
documentation process. Develop interpersonal skill on intra group work.

The most challenging task I performed:

In my intern I faces a big challenge and that is IFS. IFS is a computer program which is used
for keep and update all kind of information about the company. This program is very
complex specially for us who have used it for the first time. Moreover, I did not get much
knowledge about it from my supervisor due to lack of his free time.

Problem Identification and Solution:

1. Problem Identification-
1. Apex Footwear Limited suffers from internal communication gap.
2. Lot of departments and the inter-connection is poor Poor.
3. Suffers from the shortage of employees.
4. Higher work pressure.
5. Software are not use appropriately for update.

2. Solutions-
1. Apex Footwear Limited must create a strong communication channel for every
employees so that their voice get heard to the top level management. The mid-
level managers and other employees should visit the retail shops and factory
most often. Apart from this, Apex Footwear Limited should also maintain a
resilient.

2. he survey results indicate that comparatively is an internal communication gap

in the organization. Though Apex tries to follow flat organization structure,
there remains a hierarchical structure, where bureaucracy is practiced. So this
creates an internal communication gap among the employees. So Apex
Footwear Limited can encourage employees to innovate things and make them
participate in the decision-making process.

5
3. To create strong communication medium Apex Footwear Limited should
make easier communication way towards their employees. Employees are not
aware of their perceptual knowledge, they are more focused on following the
specific guidelines given by their supervisors. In the findings it is visible that
25% respondents face the perceptual barriers. If they are being communicated
proper instruction, it would have been easier for them to understand their work
and develop efficiency.

4. As Apex Footwear Limited deals with the employees of different levels, the
communication approach should be different also. Employees are emotional and
sensitive. Different medium and methods can ensure a strong communication
channel. If the organization tries to communicate with all the employees using the
same approach it will not be an effective way of communication. To handle every
situation Apex Footwear Limited should have practiced appropriate way of
communication that.

5. As consistent communication and trustworthiness linked with each other,

strong communication should be ensured by practicing communication
through scalar chain, it gives a proper support to the employees. It also works
as a communication bridge among the top level and the lower level
management. It boosts up the overall performance of the employees and
creates transparency.

Conclusion
Now-a-days employees of an organization expects to get the basic values and benefits they
are promised to have. If the internal communication becomes strong enough, the turnover rate
of the employees get reduced which helps to save a valuable manpower of the organization as
well as helps to avoid the unnecessary recruitment cost.

The main limitation of this study is that data are inadequate from different relevant sources. It
is desirable to re-evaluate this result when a longer evaluation period is prevalent. The
direction for prospective research would insert one or more valuables over and above
observation on the particular sector.
