Twilight, by Stephanie Meyers, is set in a small gloomy town called Forks in the state of
Washington. It is based on a central character named Bella, who moves to the town to live with
her dad after her mom remarries. She is a very likeable protagonist and as a teenager, I found her
personality to be very relatable. She wants to fit in but also not stand out in the high school. She
tries at her schoolwork and socially but not overly so. She is not a perfect person, on the outside
or inside, and happily takes this is in stride with jokes about her clumsiness etc. without being a
negative person. At high school, she meets Edward Cullen and we learn that his entire family is a
group of amazingly beautiful, confident and perfect people. While she is extremely fascinated
with him, he seems to have an almost laughable “distaste” for her, and she cannot figure out
why.
Later, when she is almost run over by a car parking in the lot at school, he saves her life
and she cannot figure out why because he was so far across the parking lot just seconds before
the accident. Bella also meets a Native American boy named Jacob Black, whose is a family
friend of her father’s and he tells her a legend that the Cullen family is a group of vampires. It is

romance with a person who is so incredibly dangerous that he might in fact “bite” her. It sounds
ridiculous but is a very interesting read because it is written in a way that makes the reader really
route for Bella to get the life she wants in her new hometown. I have heard that people really got
excited about this series and were passionate about whether Bella ended up with Edward (Team
Edward) or Jacob (Team Jacob). Of course, associating with both Edward and Jacob does place
Bella in a lot of danger throughout the story when some bad vampires try to hurt her time and
time again. It is a little unbelievable but fun that such an ordinary girl like Bella causes so much
drama and so many people fighting over her, and I think that is why it is such a popular story.
The story is definitely not over at the end of book one, so be prepared to be drawn into picking
up the second novel “New Moon,” even if you really thought vampires and werewolves weren’t
your thing. The author created such an action-packed fantasy world that makes it fun to keep
reading to find out what would happen if something like this actually occurred in an average
