IV. Course Details

COURSE NO. AND TITLE GE-MMW – Mathematics in the Modern World

COURSE DESCRIPTION This course deals with nature of mathematics, appreciation of its
practical, intellectual, and aesthetic dimensions, and application of
mathematical tools in daily life.

The course begins with an introduction to the nature of

mathematics as an exploration of patterns (in nature and the
environment) and as application of inductive and deductive
reasoning. By exploring these topics, students are encouraged to
go beyond the typical understanding of mathematics as merely a
set of formulas but as source of aesthetics in patterns of nature, for
example and a rich language in itself (and of science) governed by
logic and reasoning.

The course the proceeds to survey ways in which mathematics

provides a tool for understanding and dealing with various aspects
of present-day living, such as managing personal finances, making
social choices, appreciating geometric designs, understanding
codes used in data transmission and security and dividing limited
resources fairly.

NUMBER OF UNITS (Lec/Lab) 3 units (3 hours lecture)

XI. Classroom Policies

1. When the number of hours lost due to absence of a student reaches 20% of the total number of hours
allotted to one subject, the student shall be dropped from the subject.
2. Students are considered late arriving fifteen minutes after the specified class schedule. Three marks of
tardiness is equivalent to one missed class.
3. Grades of “4.0” and “Incomplete (Inc)” have a year to be complied or completed. If the condition is not
removed within a year, the Registrar shall automatically change the “4.0” to “5.0” and “Inc” to “5.0”.
4. In case of dropping, a photocopy of signed dropping form must be submitted to the professor/instructor at
least one week after the student has officially dropped.
5. No phones are allowed among students during discussion and exams.
6. Intellectual dishonesty such as plagiarism, cheating in examination and/or quizzes or any other similar acts
such as the following:
a. Unauthorized possession of notes or any material related to the examination, whether he/she actually
uses them or not;
b. Deliberately looking at neighbor’s examination paper;
c. Copying from or allowing another to copy from one’s examination papers;
d. Having somebody else to take the examination for another in which case both shall be liable hereunder;
e. Talking with one another without permission during examination; and
f. Passing of one’s work any assigned report, term paper, case analysis, reaction paper, and the like, when
copied.
7. These are just general classroom policies. Internal arrangement and possible modifications of the said
classroom policies can be made between the professor/instructor and the students.

XII. Consultation Hours

• Consultation hours vary depending on the individual schedule of faculty members.
