Workshop
Objective
1. To make a bottle opener from the metal given by cutting, filing and drilling in order to
achieve the desired work piece specification.
THEORY
In any workshop setting, the student or the worker is required to know the safety
measures that are to be followed when handling various operations. Knowledge of
handling various tools and equipments is a requirement for the student or worker in
order to achieve the desired objective.
In this case, a bottle opener was to be made from a metal work piece thus the student
had to know the various tools for filing, marking, drilling and cutting the metal.
Workshop safety is everyone’s responsibility and thus the following rules have to be
followed:
1. Shearing machine
2. Flat file
3. Round fie
4. Steel Rule
5. Divider
6. Bench vice
7. Hacksaw
8. Centre punch
9. Ball peen Hammer
10. Try square
11. Drilling machine
12. Drill bits (diameter 13mm & 10mm)
13. Drill bit
14. Hack saw
15. Flat file (double cut file)
16. Flat chisel
17. Centre punch
18. Scriber
19. Angle plate
20. Universal surface gauge
21. Number punches
22. Single cut file
Procedure
The required length of the work piece was achieved by first measuring a length of 120
mm using a steel rule due to its accuracy. A shearing machine was used to cut the work
piece up to the required length. In order for the work piece to be filed, it was flattened
using a ball peen hammer due to the bend edges. The work piece was clamped on to the
bench vice, and then two sides perpendicular to each other were filed by a method
called cross-filing using a flat file in order to have the two datum sides. A try square was
used to check the perpendicularity of the datum which was used to establish a
reference position from which all dimensions were taken. The work piece was clamped
onto the angle plate then using a scriber in a surface gauge the heights were set in
conjunction with a steel rule and then the centre line of the work piece was marked and
2mm above and below the centre line, two centre lines were marked in order to obtain
the centre for the circles to be marked. From the short edge of the datum of work piece
the centre hole for 10 mm was first located using a steel rule then using a try square son
the second datum edge the line was scribed to intersect centre for the hole. Where the
lines intersected, the intersection was centre punched. The dividers were set using the
graduations of a steel rule. After locating the centre dot, the divider were set on the dot
and the 10mm diameter was marked was scribed on the work piece for the bottom hole
.From the first centre, 77mm was measured and another centre was marked on it.4mm
to its right another centre was marked in order to produce the outermost radius. Each
radius was scribed again to enhance visibility,. The profile was completed by scribing a
line tangential to the two outermost radii using the edge of a steel rule as a guide. The
complete marking out of the profile was done using a ball peen hammer and centre
punch. The metal was placed under a piece of wood in order to raise the level and
prevent one from drilling into the vice and then it was fixed onto the vice which was
placed on the working table. The work piece was positioned under the drill and it was in
line with the centre dot for the 10 mm hole and then the machine was switched on and
the hole was drilled out. Also the slot for 10 mm hole and 13mm hole were made using
the same process and after finishing drilling the machine was switched off. The work
piece was clamped onto the vice then excess metal was cut out 2 mm oversize on length
and width off by the hacksaw and chipped off by a flat chisel and a hammer in order to
achieve the desired shape. All the sides were filed up to the marked lines and shaped
into the desired shape by cross-filing. The surface of the metal was polished by a single
cut file. Smoothing of the edges of the bottle opener was done and finally oiling was
done on the bottle opener to preserve the surface.
RESULT
Conclusion
The desired objective was achieved as the output was made with the specification of the
diagram. Knowledge of handling various tools and equipment helped in the making the
desired shape of the bottle opener.
