Bayog, Bambusa merrilliana

The young shoots on the abaxial side are covered by light grayish - green culm sheaths with very
stiff, appressed, and a fine short hairs. Like any other species, the sheaths ' adaxial side is always
smooth and bright. The sheaths of the culm are deciduous and coriaceous, embracing the shoots
very tightly. The lower sheath portions are shorter and narrower, while the upper portions are
longer and wider; usually the apex is not curved to the middle. The blades are triangular and short,
and the blade's transverse posture is undulating. The blade's upper part is made up of reddish brown
bristles. With ear like appendages, the ligules are prominently distinct. The auricles also have
visible reddish brown hair lobbing. Bayog's young shoots are almost similar to its relative,
Kawayang tinik (B. blumeana), with the exception of the prominent yellow brown outlines on the
exposed sides of the culm sheaths that turn light brown when dried. It is velvety when peeled with
the distinct nodes and alternating "eyes" in each node in one line opposite each other. When halved,
the young shoots are solid from base to tip except for the small middle holes B. merrilliana (bayog)
nutrient tests by means of proximate analysis contain 91.46±0.28 moisture, fat 1.01±0.03 (%),
protein 2.29±0.01, ash 0. 81±0.03, fibre 0.88±0.08, and NFE 3.49±0.20 (%) and 0.81±0.03 NFE
(Caasi-Lit , Mateo & Ruben ).

Characteristics of B. blumeana
B.blumeana is native to the Philippines with a leafy branchlet filled with thorns with a
swollen top portion. The clump's base is densely set with branches and branchlets that seem to be
impenetrable. The spiny branches hold the plant firmly during strong winds, preventing the culms
(poles) from lodging. The culms are almost solid and thick at the base of the poles and can reach
15 cm in diameter. The internodes at the center and top of the poles are between 5 cm long at the
base to 35 cm. A sturdy culmination can extend to 20 m. B. Blumeana is one of the seven main
species that is still the best species of shoot in the Philippines and recommended in Yunan, China
(Rojo 1999). It regenerates faster than wood as a grass and has a very short growth cycle and can
be harvested for four years following planting (Caasi-Lit, Mateo & Ruben).
The macronutrients analysis of B.blumeana bamboo shoots contains 14.0 calories (%),
crude protein 1.80 (%), crude at 0.30, carbohydrates 2.00 (%), and crude fiber 1.29 (%) Report
ERG-BS (2009).
Giganteus
The chemical analysis of D.giganteus bamboo shoots contains 91.19% water, minerals (0.89 %),
phosphorus (12.57 mg/100g), calcium (26.93 mg/100g), iron (1.06 mg/100g), hydrocyanic acid
(0.044%), protein (2.59%), niacin (6.40 mg/100g), and carbohydrates (4.78%) (Debangana., et al,
Sahu & Sharma 2010).
