SPED Reflection
I admit that before this subject was introduced to me, I have no idea on what is the in-depth
meaning of Special Education is. Though I have a sister who is handicapped due to polio, my
knowledge on different kinds of special needs were limited.
I am not really expecting anything from this subject since I thought it should not be
complicated since we will be only talking about “Special Needs”. Little did I know that it is actually
more than what I have already known.
The very first thing I have learned from this subject matter was the history on how it was
developed and realized that it was really never easy. The thought on making it possible only
started in the early 1900’s which made me think how unfortunate those who were not given the
chance to experience what the persons with special needs has now. Fortunately great minds were
given the chance to make things possible just to help the persons with special needs not just getting
the education they deserves but mostly the better charge it can affect their lives.
Because of this subject I have also learned that Special Education was not only designed to
the persons with disabilities, those who has exceptionalities or gifted are being catered as well.
What I have mostly fully understood is the term that is being used as “handicapped” and
“disabled”, I have thought long that it shares the same meaning however, after our discussion
where each group has to explain its meaning, my eyes was opened. Now I know that “handicap” is
a disadvantage that makes achievement usually difficult while “disability” is defined as a physical,
mental, cognitive, or developmental condition that impairs, interferes with, or limits a person’s
ability to engage in certain tasks.
I have also known now the laws that the Philippine Government crafted just to protect and
to give an equal opportunities to the persons with disability to be able to still function in our
community and mostly to uplift their spirits and dignity.
I now have fully understood why this subject matter has been added to our course outline.
As I have also exposed in different schools for our field studies, it is evident that there are learners
who really needs more understanding and patience who badly needed Special Education in order
to provide the their rights to have an equal opportunity to obtain learning and education.
My utmost respect and understanding the our countrymen with special needs has been
taken to the next level. Now that I am fully aware of the things to be considered, I can now
confidently say that I will be a caring and open minded to more categories of SPED learners in the
future as an educator.
