The Effects of Art Therapy as a Coping Mechanism
on People with Generalized Anxiety Disorder
This research paper aims to determine the effectiveness of Art Therapy on people with
Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Specific questions that the researcher aims to answer are the
following:
1. How can the use of art materials be used to help reduce anxiety symptoms felt by GAD

In order for the researcher to answer the questions stated above, the following questions would
be necessary for the interviewees in order to conclude the research.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS
1. How does Art Therapy affect the mental health of patients with GAD?
Expressive arts therapy is more concerned about the process the client goes through.
Through the use of the art materials, these objects become a conduit of emotions. The therapist
should be able to facilitate the exploration of varied materials by the client for hi,/her to be able
to choose which of those materials he/she can use to best express his inner experience. Art
materials helps in the externalization of these concerns. Art has a containing capacity that makes
the client feel safe even when faced with threatening issues, of course, through the facilitation of
a trained therapist. Since patients with issues of anxiety feel threatened, creating a safe space or
an opportunity for the client to bear witness and process these emotions in a controlled and safe
process such as in the use of art will prove beneficial. Also, the arts provides a feeling of
groundedness which anchors his/her issues safely to a state that can be best understood. By
putting one’s thoughts and emotions on paper, in words, movement, or sound, the client sees
issues in a more concrete and static form, rather than an abstract and ever-changing blob that is
hard to comprehend.
In my practice, I dont only use the visual arts but I utilize a multimodal person centered
approach and guided by mindfulness. This being said, I dont only use the visual arts in dealing
with issues in anxiety since it really depends on the person what he/she sees as the best fit for
expression of his/her issues. The feeling of anxiety is quite visceral and elicits a lot of physical
sensations/symptoms. Based on my experience, the use of drama and movement connects the
person to his/her body which the anxiety has taken control of. Through the use of movement, the
person realizes that he/she is in control of the body and that he/she can come to a deeper
understanding of his/her anxiety and how to control it by regaining control of one’s own body.
By relating these methods to mindfulness, the client is now facilitated to be more aware of
what’s going on inside, not judging wahtever they find there, but understanding it and how it can
be resolved.
2. How does Art Therapy affect the emotional health of patients with GAD?
Emotions are abstract making it hard to understand if allowed to remain in flux, thus,
threatening and at times, overwhelming. THrough the expressive arts, these abstract
emotions are made concrete and manageable such as in the case of drawings where the
image is bound by the four coners of the paper. These boundaries seem to create a feeling
of control and safety. The client can process without the feeling of lacking control. Also,
the projection of one’s issues on paper makes it less threatening for the anxious patient
because art affords the feeling that the one being talked about during processing is not the
client himself/herself but the drawing.
3. FOCUS QUESTION: What are the types of art therapy you use to help patients with
GAD cope with their anxiety? Please list as much activities as you can in this format.
Since I follow a more person centered approach, I usually use non-directive methods.
I usually start with a focusing activity to help them get a felt sense of what it is they want
to bring up during the sessions. Most common are visual arts but they may also choose to
do some movement which I usually incorporate at the start to create body awareness. I
sometimes incorporate sound and poetry , but there’s really no specific directives.
