One-Five-One Final
One-Five-One Final
When I first began my journey with the Satanic Temple, one of the first things that
struck me was how perfectly the Seven Fundamental Tenets are represented by the
seven basic shapes that make up the Inverted Pentagram that we hold sacred. Since
then, I have spent a lot of time thinking about that relationship and what it really
means and I have started thinking about it as one-five-one for the three layers of
geometric shapes expressed in the Inverted Pentagram.
One - Compassion
At the center of the Pentagram is a Pentagon. To me, that represents our first and, in
my opinion, our most sacred tenet; “One should strive to act with compassion and
empathy toward all creatures in accordance with reason.” By setting Compassion as
the center of the Inverted Pentagram it also sets compassion as the center of our
spiritual journey as Satanists. It instills in us the innate goodness of our character.
This goodness is not only a virtue but the source of our power and our strength.
Everything grows from it. We hold on to that center, and our hellish nature will be
allowed to burn bright.
It is not surprising that the second tenet, “The struggle for justice is an ongoing and
necessary pursuit that should prevail over laws and institutions.” and “One’s body is
inviolable, subject to one’s own will alone.” are the two tenets that sit at the top of the
Inverted Pentagram. These two points are often described as the Devil’s Horns,
thrusting up at God in defiance, and what is more defiant than our immutable
beliefs in justice over the law and self-emancipation over servitude? Not much, I
would say.
To the left and right of these tenets sit “The freedoms of others should be respected,
including the freedom to offend. To willfully and unjustly encroach upon the
freedoms of another is to forgo one's own.” and “Beliefs should conform to one's best
scientific understanding of the world. One should take care never to distort scientific
facts to fit one's beliefs.” to help guide our actions. Freedom reminds us that we have
the ability to speak and do as we deem fit, allowing our hearts to soar to whatever
places they need to go to live our best Satanic life, while Knowledge tempers those
base desires making sure we understand the world around us and our place in it.
Combined, they ensure that we never mistake Oppression for Freedom nor Dogma
for Knowledge since they both call us back to our center, Compassion.
Finally, our last tenet of the five, “People are fallible. If one makes a mistake, one
should do one's best to rectify it and resolve any harm that might have been caused.”
urges us to step back and examine our mistakes and the mistakes of others; creating
space, held by Compassion, to acknowledge what we have done, apologize and rectify
the harms we have caused. In many ways this tenet, Mistakes, is the most Satanic of
all as it acknowledges our shared fallibility so we can learn and be better as
individuals and as a community.
One - Spirit
“Every tenet is a guiding principle designed to inspire nobility in action and thought.
The spirit of compassion, wisdom, and justice should always prevail over the written
or spoken word.” is the tenet the helps us transition from Satanists in our homes to
Satanists in society at large. It asks us to think of others; not just our allies, but our
enemies. It asks us to be the best self we can be in any given moment and every day.
Living our spirituality as Satanists should be beautiful and inspiring. Our philosophy
is a joy to be celebrated every day, not a heavy weight to be tolerated for a glorious
afterlife. Our spirituality is about creating a better day every day for ourselves, our
friends and the world around us by living the Tenets we hold so dear.
To some, this all may seem very obvious. To others, this may be a revelation. To me, it
is a way to think about who I want to be and how I want to live my life as a Satanist. I
look at the Inverted Pentagram and I see geometric beauty that reminds me of the
beauty of our beliefs. An Inverted Pentagram allows me to recenter myself and helps
me visualize what I want to manifest in the world.
Hail Satan!
