Surface Imperfection Requirements
d) For pipe that is intended to be subsequently coated (See Section I), the surfaces to be coated
shall be essentially free of scabs, slivers, cold laps, burrs or other surface defects that would
impair the coating.
9.13.2.2 c) For pipe intended for subsequent internal coating, the inside weld bead shall not
extend above the adjacent pipe surface by more than 0.118 inch.

6.3 Pipe or fittings received in a damaged condition or showing serious defects that may impair
the coating, such as extensive laminations, burrs, gouges, pits, metal slivers or cold laps, or
uneven weld cap or weld irregularity shall be reported to the Buyer's Representative for
disposition. The Vendor shall determine final disposition due to the coating inability.
7.5.2 When serious defects such as mentioned in paragraph 6.3 are found following the
abrasive cleaning operation, the affected pipe or fitting shall be set aside for disposition by the
Buyer's Representative.
7.5.3 If these anomalies affect enough of the pipe or fitting to the extent that the coating
process is severely disrupted, the coating process shall be stopped and the Buyer informed. The
Vendor shall advise the Buyer of any remedial measures that could be taken to achieve an
acceptable coating. The Vendor shall make the final decision, after consultation with the
Buyer's Representative, whether the affected pipe or fittings can be coated.
The surface to be coated shall be carefully inspected for surface defects. SUBCONTRACTOR
shall be responsible for the repair of any accessible defects that can be repaired by filing or
smooth grinding operation and for restoring the anchor pattern at the repaired locations when
the
repair size exceeds 75-mm in any direction. The tools and manner employed to remove metal
defects shall not contaminate the surface. Any pipes containing extensive surface defects that
cannot be readily repaired shall be quarantined for disposition by the CONTRACTOR and / or
COMPANY.
In case of repeated significant defect(s) all operations shall be stopped and both COMPANY’s
and CONTRACTOR’s representatives shall be informed. SUBCONTRACTOR shall advise them
of any remedial measures that could be taken to achieve an acceptable surface preparation.
The
final decision whether the affected pipes can be coated or not, shall be made by
SUBCONTRACTOR after consultation with CONTRACTOR’s Representative. CONTRACTOR /
COMPANY shall not be responsible for any impact on cost and delivery schedules resulting
from
rejection of pipes.

Pipes received from different lots or Shipments from welspun and it was difficult to classify
either is it rust grade B or rust grade C without pre-blast inspection. During the bare pipe
inspection few pipes have mill scale, Crazing and slight pitting was observed and after blasting it
was observed that the pipes have pitting’s with depth differ from 0.2 to 0.5MM and few pipes
have deep gouges of different depth more than 0.1MM. That Surface defects may impair the
coating and appear on the coating surface.

Visual inspection shall be performed on the pipes prior to blast cleaning with the following
acceptance / rejection criteria. The sample size shall be as per Attachment-1.
Pipes with rust grade A or rust grade B per ISO 8501-1 shall be acceptable for surface
preparation and coating operations. Pipes with rust grade C and / or rust grade D per ISO
8501-1 shall be quarantined and reported to CONTRACTOR for evaluation and
disposition.
The bare surfaces of pipes shall have no surface defects that are detrimental to
application of FBE coating. When defects that are detrimental to the application of FBE
coating have been detected on the pipes, those pipes shall be quarantined and reported to
CONTRACTOR for evaluation and disposition.
As per above statement from different specification it was noted that pitting’s on the pipes
surface is not suitable for coating. It was decided to inform this situation to the Buyer's
Representative for further investigation and disposition.
If CPY allow to perform the coating on pipes having such imperfection then, any defects appear
on the coating surface due to surface imperfection must be acceptable for the CPY.
