CASE STUDY
Design approach
◦ To design incorporate quiet , comfortable and adequate space for study .

◦ Provide versatile spaces that support a wide range of users’ learning and research activities while
accommodating rapid advances in information technology .

◦ To control temperature and humidity by natural resources and mechanical system

◦ To provide conducive study spaces including a sufficient number of seats and various types of seating

◦ Sufficient work space and efficient operations for staffs

◦ Ergonomic workstations for user and staffs

◦ Reduce noises by installing a large panel of glass between quiet and collaborative spaces.
Route 9 Library
◦ Inspired by a great tree under which the community gathers to learn, share, and build new knowledge,
the design of the New Castle County Route 9 Library & Innovation Center provides an array of cutting-
edge program spaces under a single, protective canopy.
◦ Like the canopy of a tree, the perforated metal roof playfully expresses the organic structure of leaves
while filtering out harsh solar rays and flooding the interior with diffused natural light. Stonemasonry bars
flanking the east and west frame the central open space of the library volume and ground the building
by providing contrast to the lightness of the canopy.

Interior ideas
Cobram Library & Learning Center
◦ ‘local’ library, embracing emerging technologies & promoting flexible learning & library spaces across
all ages.
◦ design process involved tracing the line of the nearby Murray River, then superimposing this as the cut
line on a curvilinear timber battened screen.
◦ a dynamic façade that wraps the perimeter of the library, filtering & throwing light into the internal library
spaces
Interior design concept
◦ A central pathway & ceiling element, acting as a way-finding spine, runs through the center of the library
space , can be considered this kind of design for our interior .
Lawrence Public Library
◦ Old library was closed due to poor thermal performance, difficult wayfinding and a lack of daylighting
and openness
◦ Citizens of Lawrence voiced their thoughts and established key design considerations for the project,
including an enhanced children’s area, greater access to technology and an emphasis on
environmental sustainability.
◦ The design for the addition is based on a simple expansion diagram. A continuous reading room wraps
the existing library on all sides, transforming it into a forward-looking, community-centered place.

◦ new elevation opens up to a different public constituency: neighborhoods to the west, the post office to the
north, downtown to the east and a new plaza to the south.

◦ new terra cotta façade is solid in areas where book collections need to be protected, employing long, narrow
horizontal apertures to bring daylight into reading areas
◦ To aid in the goal of achieving a warm, open, light-filled and welcoming place, a new atrium was cut out of the
center of the original library, connecting the basement level to all the way up to the new clere story windows at
roof level.
◦ The sustainable design strategy for the addition focused on increasing energy efficiency via daylight harvesting
throughout the interior, improving thermal performance via the terra cotta rain screen system, and strategic sun-
shading to eliminate glare.
◦ existing building and mechanical systems were re-used rather than completely replaced which reduced some
of the embedded energy involved in building a new structure.
