Information Systems are vital to business and tomorrow’s business leaders are expected to have
skills, knowledge, and capabilities to work effectively in business environments that integrate
people, business processes, and information technology. MIS 200 is an introductory course to
Management of Information Systems, a core business function.

This course introduces the various facets of information systems in business, particularly; an
emphasis is placed on the integration and alignment between information systems and other
functional areas such as accounting, supply chain, marketing, and finance.
The following major topics will be discussed during the course: introduction of IT (hardware,
software, and networking); database management; gaining competitive advantage with IT; the world-
wide-web and the Internet; IT supply chain; Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP); Customer
Relationship Management (CRM); Social Media; E-commerce strategies for the new economy;
information systems development (phases, tools and techniques); protecting people and information
(threats and safeguards); emerging trends and technologies; and decision analysis.
Additionally, students will have opportunities to practice the Information Systems concepts they
learn during the lecture periods using various computer tools such as Microsoft Excel, Access, and
other web-authoring software.
Expected Learning:
After completing this course successfully, students should be able to –
• Provide an understanding of the strategic role of information systems in organizations.
• Describe the components of a computer system (hardware, software, and networking).
• Understand and identify the current technologies used for obtaining, storing, and
communicating information in support of orientations and decision-making within an
organization.
• Describe the importance and ways to implement security procedures.
• Improve personal computer skills (Microsoft Excel, Access, Web Page Authoring, etc.).

Approximately five quizzes will be administered throughout the term. These quizzes will typically
be conducted at the beginning of the class periods. The exact dates for quizzes will be confirmed
during the class at least one week prior to the quiz date.

These exams will test assigned chapter readings and related material discussed primarily through
lecture periods and course activities. Internet Searches, cell phones, personal digital assistants,
pagers, and other electronic devices with communication capabilities are prohibited at all
times during the exam.

The exact date/time for the exam will be confirmed (through Weekly Handouts) in class at least one
week prior to the exam date. The exams will ONLY be available during the scheduled date/time
period.

You can expect the grading of your exam to be completed within one week of submission. You can
