Information Systems are vital to business and tomorrow’s business leaders are expected to have
skills, knowledge, and capabilities to work effectively in business environments that integrate
people, business processes, and information technology. MIS 200 is an introductory course to
Management of Information Systems, a core business function.

This course introduces the various facets of information systems in business, particularly; an
emphasis is placed on the integration and alignment between information systems and other
functional areas such as accounting, supply chain, marketing, and finance.

The following major topics will be discussed during the course: introduction of IT (hardware,
software, and networking); database management; gaining competitive advantage with IT; the world-
wide-web and the Internet; IT supply chain; Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP); Customer
Relationship Management (CRM); Social Media; E-commerce strategies for the new economy;
information systems development (phases, tools and techniques); protecting people and information
(threats and safeguards); emerging trends and technologies; and decision analysis.
Additionally, students will have opportunities to practice the Information Systems concepts they
learn during the lecture periods using various computer tools such as Microsoft Excel, Access, and
other web-authoring software.

Course Purpose within MIS:
This course is designed for students with little or no knowledge of information systems. Students
who have some experience in this area will find that the course compliments that experience. MIS
200 is also the starting point for students who want to major or have a basic knowledge of MIS.

Expected Learning:
After completing this course successfully, students should be able to –
• Provide an understanding of the strategic role of information systems in organizations.
• Describe the components of a computer system (hardware, software, and networking).
• Understand and identify the current technologies used for obtaining, storing, and
communicating information in support of orientations and decision-making within an
organization.
• Describe the importance and ways to implement security procedures.
• Improve personal computer skills (Microsoft Excel, Access, Web Page Authoring, etc.).

Grading Scale:
Final letter grades in the course will be assigned based on the numeric final scores obtained
according to the scale listed below:

970 – 1000 = A+ 840 – 869 = B+ 740 – 769 = C+ 640 - 669 = D+


900 - 969 = A 800 – 839 = B 700 – 739 = C 600 – 639 = D
870 - 899 = A- 770 - 799 = B- 670 – 699 = C- Below 600 = F

1. Quizzes
Approximately five quizzes will be administered throughout the term. These quizzes will typically
be conducted at the beginning of the class periods. The exact dates for quizzes will be confirmed
during the class at least one week prior to the quiz date.

The quizzes will cover ONLY the Business & Tech Plug-ins from the book and related materials

These exams will test assigned chapter readings and related material discussed primarily through
lecture periods and course activities. Internet Searches, cell phones, personal digital assistants,
pagers, and other electronic devices with communication capabilities are prohibited at all
times during the exam.

Due Date:
The exact date/time for the exam will be confirmed (through Weekly Handouts) in class at least one
week prior to the exam date. The exams will ONLY be available during the scheduled date/time
period.

Help/Feedback:
You can expect the grading of your exam to be completed within one week of submission. You can
contact your instructor at any time to provide you feedback regarding your score.

In-class activities serve as a means of demonstrating student knowledge and critical thinking skills
related to the course content. Individual, pair, and group in-class activities may be provided during
the class period throughout the term without any prior announcements. They are designed to
encourage active communication. Details will be provided with each activity.

Each activity needs to be completed during the class periods ONLY. No class activity responses

There will be a 50% deduction for late submissions up to one week from the original due date.
After one week, you MAY NOT receive any credit for submissions.

In case of any extraordinary WEEK-LONG circumstances such as medical or family


emergencies makeup homework may be granted only if the student is able to provide legitimate
documentation (such as a physician's note) of a week-long circumstance. You MUST contact your
Course Instructor as soon as possible in regards to any lateness.
