(1) Western philosophy began around the 6th century BCE in ancient Greece with early philosophers like Thales and Pythagoras who studied nature. However, philosophy truly developed with Socrates and Plato in the 5th-4th century BCE who focused on ethics and developing systems of reasoning. (2) Philosophy can be viewed holistically as the search for knowledge about the world through ideas that cannot be proven or disproven, requiring one to back up their own philosophy. (3) The phrase "Madaling maging tao, mahirap magpakatao" distinguishes between the physical existence of humans ("madaling maging tao")

WRITTEN OUTPUT NO. 1

INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY OF THE HUMAN PERSON

1. RESEARCH ABOUT THE HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY. WHEN IT STARTED?

Western Philosophy is the philosophical tradition of the Western world and dates to Pre-Socratic
thinkers who were active and it really began in Ancient Greece in about the 6th Century BCE such as
Thales (c. 624–546 BCE) and Pythagoras (c. 570–495 BCE) who practiced a "love of wisdom"
(philosophia) and were also termed physiologoi (students of physis, or nature). Thales of Miletus is
usually considered the first proper philosopher, although he was just as concerned with natural
philosophy (what we now call science) as with philosophy as we know it.
Philosophy really took off, though, with Socrates and Plato in the 5th - 4th Century B.C. (often
referred to as the Classical or Socratic period of philosophy).Unlike most of the Pre-Socratic
philosophers before him, Socrates was more concerned with how people should behave, and so was
perhaps the first major philosopher of Ethics. He developed a system of critical reasoning in order to
work out how to live properly and to tell the difference between right and wrong.

2. DISTINGUISH PHILOSOPHY IN A HOLISTIC VIEW FROM A PARTIAL POINT OF VIEW.

Philosophy is the search for knowledge. It is the only way to truly gain knowledge about the world
around you in the sense that it opens your eyes and mind too, many different ideas that cannot be
proven nor disproven, that what philosophy is. You can believe what you want and as long as you can
back it up and believe in it, and maybe get someone else to go along with it you have created your own
philosophy. Knowledge is not learned it is found.

3. WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY “MADALING MAGING TAO, MAHIRAP MAGPAKATAO”?

"Madaling maging tao, mahirap magpakatao."
may isip, kios-loob, may kalayaan at dignidad.

4. SHARE YOUR CONCEPTS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF PHILOSOPHY.

Philosophy give you more than just knowledge of the world. They give you a deep understanding
of how the world works, even how it should work and it makes me a better thinker and a better person.
It’s not just to help improve critical thinking skills, but it can help provide us with knowledge of logic that
can greatly help improve critical thinking.
