The document discusses and compares two short stories - "The Tell-Tale Heart" by Edgar Allan Poe and "The Monkey's Paw" by W.W. Jacobs. It argues that "The Tell-Tale Heart" is a better example of horror based on its use of suspense through elements like nighttime setting, immediate murder, and guilt-ridden narrator told from his point of view. In contrast, "The Monkey's Paw" takes place during the day, has wishes that cause a son's death, and lacks the same unsettling point of view. Overall, the document analyzes how these Gothic stories employ setting, themes, and perspective to establish atmosphere and suspense.

Horror is interesting because of the suspense and how exciting it can
be. For example, the “The Tell-Tale Heart”, "The Monkey's Paw", “Criminal Minds”, “Insidious”, and other horror movies, books, short films, short stories all have a form of suspense. “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe, is a short story about a crazy man killing an old man because of his eye. "The Monkey's Paw" by W.W. Jacobs is also a short story but it is about a family that gets only 3 wishes, that is the cause of their son’s death. “The Tell-Tale Heart” is a better example of horror than "The Monkey's Paw" because of the setting, themes/lessons, and point of view. One way that “The Tell-Tale Heart” is better than "The Monkey's Paw" is because it has more suspense. “The Tell-Tale Heart” has a better example of horror because it takes place mostly during the night time. It makes the story more suspenseful for the reader unlike “The Monkey’s Paw” which takes place during the day time and also at night. During the night time if there's a small amount of light in the room it scares some people. In “The Tell-Tale Heart” he only opens the lantern just a little bit so a tiny ray of light shines in the old man’s eye. Another thing that Poe does in “The Tell-Tale Heart” is he makes the murder happen right away at the beginning of the story. At the beginning of the story the narrator waits 8 days till he kills the old man. These are some of the ways Poe uses suspense in his story. The theme is one way that helps the author add horror. One way that “The Tell-Tale Heart” adds horror is by theme. One example is the theme is shown in the title, there's foreshadowing in the title. The foreshadowing in the title, it has Heart in it. Tell-Tale heart gives away that there is going to be something related to the heart. It relates the theme because it’s giving away that it’s a horror story. One way that the author in “The Tell-Tale Heart” uses theme is that we can feel guilt. The character is feeling guilty because the author makes the character feel like he was really bad. One final way the author uses theme to make his horror story better is by the use of guilt which makes you confess your sins or actions. In the story one way the character feels guilt is when he yelled, “Villians!” I shrieked, “Dissemble no more! I admit the deed! - Tear up the planks! - Here, Here! - It is the beating of his hideous heart!” (Poe 94). The quote makes him sound like he’s crazy. These are a few ways the author uses theme in his stories to make it have more detail. In the “The Tell-Tale Heart” point of view helps Poe add horror to his stories. One way “The Tell-Tale Heart” uses point of view is telling a story from a person's point of view. In the story the main character said, he could hear everything in heaven, hell, and on earth. This shows how creepy it is to use point of view. Another way that Poe adds point of view is we only see from the narrator's point of view. His actions are also creepy, he said he opened the door on the eighth night to the old man's room. A final way is the narrator is crazy in “The Tell-Tale Heart” and in "The Monkey's Paw" Mr. White wasn’t. These are some ways that “The Tell-Tale Heart” uses point of view. Most horror stories are creative stories where the events told in the story could really happen in real life. In the “The Tell-Tale Heart” the main character kills an old man because of his eye. Where as in “The Monkey's Paw” Has a son died a tragic accident and the mother wishes for the sun back. These are both good examples of horror, however “The Tell-Tale Heart” has a better example of horror. “The Tell-Tale Heart” is a better example of horror because of the setting, theme/plot, and point of view.
