Introduction
At one point, I didn't really understand what essential oils were. I knew that they
were liquids that smelled good and were used for massages and to support
health. But how they did these things, I didn't know. And, well, I didn't care.
It wasn't until I started pursuing natural, healthful living that essential oils piqued
my interest. I found them popping up in recipes for home remedies, cleaning
supplies, and skincare products. This spurred my extensive research into action.
My research spanned about a year and a half. I diligently scoured the internet and
books for trustworthy sources of information from well-educated people. I
impaled these sources with my plethora of questions. Questions like: What are
essential oils? How are they made? Where do they come from? How are they
used? What do they do? Are they pure and top quality?
By the time 2014 came around, I had a pretty good idea of the whos, whats,
wheres, whys, and hows. And I had finally settled upon the brand that I wanted
to purchase from.
You guessed it. That brand was Young Living. After all of my research, this was
the brand I finally chose. There was a lot of reasons that went into my choosing
this specific brand, but here are a few of the top:

3 Young Living cares how their plants are grown. Young Living cares so
much about quality that they commit to growing a lot of their own plants via
their own farms. The oils that they do outsource come from carefully selected
farms that they personally regulate to ensure consistent quality across the board.
You can visit Young Living's farms. Want to see the Seed to Seal quality
4 process with your own eyes? Or even participate? Visit one of Young Living's
globally located farms and watch their distillation process for yourself. I deeply
appreciate this open-book honesty.
5 Young Living's oils are the purest available. Their essential oils are free
from adulterants, fillers, chemicals, and impurities. They are highly
concentrated and authentically pure. Plus they are considered therapeutic grade,
which means they are completely safe for human usage.
Young Living carries the largest selection of oils and products. This is
7 the least important reason, but if I'm going to stick to a specific brand, I like
that it has a wide variety of oils and products to choose from. This prevents me
from having to “hop” to different distributors or brands, plus it just makes it
cheaper {only one order, only one shipping charge, etc.}.

Put broadly, essential oils are volatile fluids that have been extracted from
various plant components including the flower, leaves, stem, and root.
Essential oils have a fairly vast spectrum of uses. They can be used for health
supplementation, immunity support, flavor enhancement, cosmetic application, or
even cleaning supplies.
Essential oils are incredibly effective because they have a lipid form and thus
absorb readily into the body's cells.

• Absolute. Some oils that are more delicate, such as rose essential oil, are
dubbed absolute because they cannot be steam extracted.
• Adulterated. A term that refers to low-quality essential oils that have been
made impure by the addition of inferior ingredients.
• Aromatic. This refers to oils that can be used aromatically, or inhaled.
• Capsule. An empty pill capsule that can be filled with a mixture of essential
oil and carrier oil for easier internal use.
• Carrier Oil. A neutral vegetable oil such as olive, coconut, or almond that
is used to dilute an essential oil.
• Diffuse. To disperse an essential oil into the air {usually along with water}.
• Diffuser. An appliance used to diffuse essential oils and water into the air.
• Dilute. To make an essential oil thinner or weaker such as by adding a
carrier oil.
• Distillation. A process in which essential oils are extracted using heat and
sometimes pressure. When done correctly, the oil's beneficial properties
remain intact. Young Living uses a gentle steam distillation process and an
equally as gentle cold pressing for most of their oils.
• EO. An acronym for essential oil.
• ER. An acronym for Essential Rewards.
• Essential Oil. Often shortened to EO. Essential oils are potent oils that
have been extracted from various plant components including the flower,
leaves, stem, or root.
• Essential Rewards. Often shortened to ER. These are reward points
earned by making Young Living product purchases that can be applied to
future purchases to save money. Learn more in the Essential Rewards
section of this book.
• Expression. The removal of an essential oil from the plant component.
Forms of expression include distillation, machine abrasion, and solvent
extraction.
• Internal. This refers to oils that can be taken internally, or eaten.
• Neat. This term applies to the use of an essential oil straight, as in without
any dilution. Usually used in reference to applying an oil topically.
• Orifice Reducer. This is the piece on the top of an essential oil bottle that
gives you more control over how many drops are used.

So, what's the difference between the regular essential oils and the
Vitality™ ones? In truth—nothing. The oil in both bottles is exactly the same.
Now why do the Vitality™ oils have a different label? Well, this is simply to
indicate that that particular oil can be used internally or as a dietary supplement.
The reason behind this semi-confusing labeling method lies in the fact that Young
Living must abide by certain government regulations. In this case, the
regulation states that a bottle of oil must be labeled for external OR
internal use—it can't be labeled for both.
But since Young Living's top notch oils CAN be used for both internal and external
purposes, Young Living started bottling them differently. So there's a white bottle
to use for internal reasons and a colorful bottle to use for external {inhalation and
topical} reasons. But remember...the oils in both kinds of bottle are the
same {for example, Lavender and Lavender Vitality™ oil are the exact same oil,
just different labels}.

essential oils.

shaped hole located in the well on top of the bottle.

• DO make sure a Young Living essential oil is meant to be used a certain way
{aromatically, internally, or topically} before using it that way. Each bottle clearly
communicates this. Read each oil's label completely before using.
• DO use glass, high quality ceramic, or essential oil grade plastic containers
{bowls, cups, etc.} or utensils with your essential oils. Plastic, styrofoam, or
other materials can melt from or leach into the oil.
• DO let the droplets fall from 6 inches or more above your hand or whatever
you're dropping them into. This is so you can clearly see how many drops are
pouring.
• DO tilt the bottle at a 45° angle to prevent too many drops from escaping.
• DO test an area of your skin when using a new oil to make sure you're not
sensitive to it.
• DO keep a bottle of carrier oil {such as olive oil} handy to wash oil off of skin or
out of the eyes or ear. Water DOES NOT help to wash away oil {in fact, it can
make it spread worse}; only
carrier oil does.
• DO NOT use metal, plastic, or
styrofoam containers or utensils
with essential oils. Some metals
react with certain essential oils
and plastic and styrofoam melt
and/or leach when they come in
contact with essential oils.
• DO NOT touch the nozzle on
the bottle to prevent dirt or
other contaminants from getting
into the oil.
• DO NOT expose the oils to
sunlight as this can reduce their
effectiveness.
• DO NOT store near cell
phones or other devices with a
high electromagnetic inter-
ference.
• DO NOT let any essential oil
get into or onto your eyes, ear
canals, or genitals.

Filling a Capsule
One way to take essential oils internally is by putting them into an empty
vegetable capsule then swallowing it like a pill with water. Here's how to get the
essential oil into a capsule.
What You Do
1. Open the empty vegetable capsule.
2. Pour the Vitality™ essential oil{s} of choice into the longer, narrower half of
the capsule.
3. Top off with carrier oil using the dropper {optional}.
4. Top the capsule with its other half.
5. Swallow the capsule as you would any pill with 8 ounces {or more} water.

When I'm not busy writing away and researching various topics for my website, I
can typically be found homeschooling or having fun with my kids, hanging out
with my honey, doing some DIY project, cleaning or organizing the house,
exploring essential oils, or making something good in the kitchen.
