ASSIGNMENT NO.1
Prestressed concrete deisgn has been patented since 1886 but was accepted as a building material
until half a century later.
Eugène Freyssinet devoted himself to the development of prestressed reinforeced concrete. His
most significant discovery was that only a high-strength steel at a high stress would achieve a
permanent pre-stress in concrete.
It is a form of RCC that builds in compressive stresses during construction to oppose those found
when in use is termed as prestressed concrete. Prestressed concrete is a combination of concrete
and steel that takes advantages of the strength of each material.

Prestressed concrete design is the used when building bridges because it allows bridges with bigger
spans to be built and for floors in high-rise buildings. It is used when building slabs, beams, decks,
sleepers and tanks.
Example of bridges where prestressed concrete is used can be seen in figure 4,5,6,7.
Example of prestressed reinforced concrete used in buildings, tanks, sleepers can be seen
in figure 8,9,10,11.
