CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION

A. Rational of the study

Extreme sports or action sports refers to a wide range of mostly individualized

activities such as surfing, skateboarding, and free-running, which share a common

ethos distinct from that of many traditional institutionalized sports (Wheaton, 2004).

Non-motorized action sports are a kind of extreme sport that does not require any

machines or fuelled things that emit smoke, non-motorize actions sports is a purely

physical activity like BMX, scooter, skateboarding, wall climbing and more. This

kind of sport is fast emerging in different parts of the Philippines including

Zamboanga city.

Zamboanga City has been a home for many Extreme sports enthusiast and

most of the participants are the young ones who are capable of doing difficult stunts.

In the city there are two big groups of non-motorized action sports, the City Alien

BMX and Zamboanga Skaters: City Alien BMX is composed of 120 members locally

and there are visiting member from Jolo, Sulu having 30 individuals while

Zamboanga Skaters is composed of 150 members the members of the said group is

still growing up. They usually gathered in different location like in the IBT

(Integrated Bus Terminal) in Divisoria, Petit barracks in front of BIR, Pasonanca,

Motorpool, Paseo, RT Lim Boulevard, Plaza Italia, and in Plaza. They normally

gathered around 9:00 pm until 1:00 am where pedestrians and motorists are less. They

rent a place to venue their event like in KCC parking lot, Yubenco Tetuan and

sometimes in covered court of barangays.

Non-motorized Extreme sports is essential for health, socialization,

development, well-being, and safety for both spectators and such sports Enthusiasts.

Lack of proper facilities and risk to the safety and health of both individuals is the

main concerned of this research.

Filipinos are known as competitive and for its world-class talent and even top

some famous sports like boxing, singing and more. And simultaneously alternative

sport or action sports or Extreme sports a fast emerging in the country. Just in 2018,

Margielyn Arda Didal, a Filipina won a gold medal in the professional street

skateboarder, in the X Games Minneapolis 2018 and a gold medallist in the 2018

Asian Games.

In the Philippines, skateboarding and BMX riding are some of the fast-

emerging action sports in; sta. Rosa Laguna, Makati Circuit, Paco Manila skate plaza,

Cebu, Davao City and in Zamboanga city. Most of the skate parks are open that

unusable when raining and also lacks other amenities for other extend necessities of

non-motorized Extreme sports Enthusiasts.

Moreover, safety and security of the Extreme sports enthusiast on the road

while doing and practice and pedestrian is at risk. A motorist passing through the road

where they are gathering for practices feel inconvenience for they might hit them or

be involved in scuh accident. Pedestrian health and safety are vulnerable to an

accident. On the other hand Zamboanga City will also boost its tourism in making

action sports include in priorities as well as other traditional sports.

C. Statement of the Problem

Safety and security of the pedestrian and extreme sports enthusiasts are

at risk due to the lack of proper facilities. How to eliminate the risk to both

pedestrian and extreme sports enthusiasts while gathered in the same location.

How extreme sports can be a catalyst in the tourism of the city. How can this

project be able to help out of school youth and neglected ones to avoid bad

vices and illegal activities?

Sports tourism attractions are destinations that provide the tourist with

things to see and do related to sport. Attractions can be natural (parks,

mountains, wildlife) or manmade (museums, stadiums, stores). General

characteristics represented in this core area of sports tourism include visits to:

- state-of-the-art sports facilities and/or unique sports facilities that generally

house sporting events, such as stadiums, arenas and domes; - sports museums

and hall/walls of fame dedicated to sports heritage and to honoring sports

heroes and leaders; - sport theme parks including water parks, summer ski

jumps, bungee jumping; - hiking trails developed for exploring nature; - sports

retail stores (Pisudski,2014).

D. Significance of the Study

This project will be a bridge to show the importance of promoting non-

motorized extreme sports like BMX, Skaters, and scooters in the city and also

to give attention to the security and safety of the riders, pedestrian and

spectators alike. This project also highlights to enhance skills of extreme

sports enthusiasts of non-motorized extreme sports and can minimize the out-

of-school-youth and neglected ones from illegal activities. And lastly, to have

proper facilities and edifices that can produce competitively in such Actions

sports with potential to compete internationally.

E. Scope and Limitations of the Study

a. Scope
The researcher had focused mainly on the safety and security of both

spectator and non-motorized sports enthusiasts in Zamboanga city and partial

highlight to promote tourism development, well-being, and socialization and,

to enhance skills with potentials and application of sustainable architecture for

safety and health. Include non-motorized extreme sports only.

b. Limitations
The researcher is limited to national and local data about non-

motorized extreme sports including Skateboard, BMX riders, scooter, and wall

climbing.

G. Definition of Terms

 BMX
- An abbreviation for bicycle motocross or bike motocross, is

a cycle sport performed on BMX bikes, either in competitive BMX

racing or freestyle BMX, or else in general on- or off-road recreation.

BMX began when young cyclists appropriated motocross tracks for

fun, racing and stunts, eventually evolving specialized BMX bikes and

competitions
 Extreme/X-games/action sports/alternative sport
- Action sports, adventure sports or extreme

sports are activities perceived as involving a high degree of risk. These

activities often involve speed, height, a high level of physical exertion

and highly specialized gear.

CHAPTER 2: REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Defining Extreme sports

The term ‘action sports’, and other related categorizations including extreme,

lifestyle, and alternative sports, refers to a wide range of mostly individualized activities such

as surfing, BMX riding, skateboarding, and free-running, which share a common character

distinct from that of many traditional standardized sports. (Wheaton, 2004).

Actions sports is an eclectic collection of risky, individualistic, and alternative sports

like skateboarding, BMX riding, motocross, surfing, etc. According to Bernett and Helson,

Actions sports have been described as individualistic, risky and unorthodox as compared to

traditional team sports. Actions sports include skateboarding, BMX riding, Freestyle

motocross, &, etc. Extreme sports implies an uncommon activity that runs counter to

traditional sports. (Bernett & Henson, 2003).

Extreme Sports in Olympics

The historical centrality of the Olympics in ‘the rise and spread of international sport’

is beyond doubt and, undeniably, for many, it remains the ‘world's greatest sporting
spectacle’. Yet, claims about its impact on the wider sportscape, and what Kellner (1995)

calls the ‘global popular’, may well be overstated, particularly for younger audiences

(Thorpe, 2011).

Explanations for the waning youth audience include the ever-growing range of

options for non-sport-related leisure participation and consumption (Bairner, 2009), and the

growing popularity of other mega-sports events (e.g. Football World Cup, the Asian Games,

the X Games; see Cashman, 2004). Conversely, non-institutionalized informal sports

activities generally, and action sports specifically (c.f. Booth and Thorpe, 2007; Wheaton,

2010), are gaining popularity in many western and some eastern (e.g. China, Japan, South

Korea) countries (Thorpe, 2008).

However, the union between ‘alternative’ action sports and the Olympics has not been

sincere. Reflecting action sports’ counter-cultural heritage, 1 many participant continue to

view these activities as alternative lifestyles rather than as sports (Wheaton, 2004).

Influence of Extreme sports

According to the Active Marketing Group, in 2003, five of the top 10 most popular

sports in the United States were action sports, including inline skating, skateboarding, and

snowboarding (ESPN Event Media, n.d.). Recent estimates suggest more than 22 million

Americans participate annually in action sports, particularly skateboarding, surfing,

snowboarding, and BMX riding, with many of these participants engaging in a collection of

action sports, and practicing regularly (Active Marketing Group, 2007).

In addition to its influence in society. “Extreme” is linked today to soft

drinks(mountain dew and redbull), health food, celebrity behaviour, fashion and makeup,

athletic shoes(vanz, converse, and nike), cars, music, and of course, to a relatively new (in the

scope of human history of sport) form of sport. Proof positive: in a Midwestern university

town, Most Extreme Sports, a maker of protective gear and apparel for in-line skating,

skateboarding, snowboarding, BMX bicycling, white-water rafting, and air sports, went from

$1 million sales in 1996, to over $6 million in 1998. Major action sports events are often held

as multi-day events with competitions, interactive festival villages, and music concerts. Most

of the events start in mid-morning and finish in late evening. “Competitions are held

concurrently at different venues within one large location or sometimes simultaneously in

different cities” (Bernett & Lachowetz, 2004).

Extreme sports value in Development

None of the major programs of Zamboanga City offer opportunities for action sports

participation speacially in non-motorize action sports. In the remainder of this section, I argue

that valuable lessons might be learned from existing action sports organizations (city Aliens,

Zamboanga skates) seeking to improve the health and well-being of children and youth in

developed and (re) developing nations. “Action sports offer the potential for developing

different skills and learning opportunities than sports typically used in programs. In contrast

to organized sports such as soccer and basketball, most action sports are non-competitive

(although competitions are popular among elite performers)” -Thorpe, therefore offering

opportunities for children and youth to gain a sense of achievement without having to

compete against, and beat, another team or player. Rather, participants can learn alongside

one another and gain a sense of accomplishment based on their skill development. Most
action sports, yet, are self-regulating, and therefore participants often quickly develop a

certain understanding of the cultural manners for sharing the space. "There is also a

celebration of play, self-expression, and creativity in the use of space and movement in many

action sport cultures, which may offer unique opportunities for skill development,

communication, and respect between participants in developing nations or war-torn

communities". (Thorpe, 2014)
