    SPEECH ABOUT ABORTION (DRAFT)

    The world that we live in consists of two colors- black and white. White if a person’s mind and
    heart is filled with goodness, black is when it is filled with greed and temptation that leads to a crime
    called “abortion”. Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary defined abortion as “the termination of a
    pregnancy that results to death of the embryo or fetus.

    Abortion may be legalized in some countries; however, I strongly disagree with this
    concept primarily because it is morally akin to murder as it is the act of taking human life. A woman’s
    health is also at risk because it can result to medical complications and develop mental health problems
    later in their lives. Also, even though many human right protectors claim that every woman has the right
    and control with her body to do anything what they think is just, control should include preventing the
    risk of unwanted pregnancy through the responsible use of contraception or, if that is not possible,
    through abstinence. Due to these reasons, I am strongly convinced that abortions should not be
    tolerated, as they harm mothers and their innocent children.

    We all know that abortion is illegal in the Philippines because it is stated in the Revised Penal
    Code of the Philippines articles number 256, 257, 258 and 259 that considers abortion to be a criminal
    offense punishable by up to six years in prison for doctors and midwives who perform abortions and by
    2‒6 years in prison for women who undergo the procedure, regardless of the reason. However, the law
    is still incapable to stop abortion because according to the Guttmacher Institute, about 600,000 Filipino
    women get abortions every year, and many turn to unlicensed doctors, use folk medicine, or attempt to
    self-induce. Moreover, It is estimated that as many as 100,000 women are hospitalized annually due to
    abortion complications, and about 1,000 women die each year after getting abortions. Those seeking
    abortions in the Philippines face not only imprisonment but also “the constant danger of death” as free
    and accessible services are out of reach, said Tinay Palabay.

    In conclusion, as time goes by, the issue about abortion will never end. Ever since from the start
    until today, the issue is still debatable but still, let us all keep in mind that abortion is not a righteous and
    humanitarian solution when a woman is experiencing unwanted pregnancy. The only way is to accept it
    wholeheartedly, may it be intentionally or unintentionally done. In fact, we should be grateful because
    we were given a wonderful gift. Some people believe that “Babies are a blessing” for the reason that
    they are angels that put smiles on our faces and can relieve the pain and sorrow their parents felt. For
    those heartless men who made their partner pregnant and sometimes encouraged them to take an
    abortion, hopefully you can prove the phrases “Don’t worry” or “Leave it to me”. A real man accepts the
    responsibility that awaits them, encourages and supports their partner.

    Modernization and development are the screams of those who are in favor, while
    righteousness is for those who are not. However, whatever the reasons may be, let us think of solutions
    that can lead to the betterment of people. Let us all work together to reduce the cases of abortion.
    These aborted babies haven’t even had a grasp of fresh air, seen the beauty of the world and haven’t
    felt love from their parents. There’s still tomorrow, don’t lose hope. Let’s suppress abortion. Today is
    the day to act because if not today then, when? The future of the next generation is in our hands.
