ORPHEUM THEATRE

D o you hear the people sing? You will today, as our
special guest at the Orpheum for the 25th anniversary
production of Les Misérables, the world’s longest
running musical, with its timeless themes of grace, love and
sacrifice. This powerful epic, winner of eight 1987 Tony Awards
including Best Musical, keeps drawing people back. It was called
“an unquestionably spectacular production from start to
finish” by the New York Times and has been seen by nearly 60
million people worldwide in 42 countries and translated into 21
languages.
Since an extremely successful run at the Orpheum in December
2011 and the 2012 release of a lauded feature film starring Hugh
Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway, I’ve been asked
frequently about its return. On behalf of Hennepin Theatre
Trust, I am delighted to welcome this enduring musical back. You are some of the lucky few
to get the• chance

before before it re-opens on Broadway next spring!
In addition to bringing some of Broadway’s hottest shows to the Twin Cities, the Trust is also
encouraging a diverse group of young patrons to explore their potential through our
education and community engagement programs. Our Critical Review student reviewer
program gives metro area high school students the opportunity to attend Broadway
productions and write reviews to be posted on the Trust’s website and in community
newspapers like the Twin Cities Daily Planet. After seeing War Horse recently, Madeline
Bertch wrote, “It was unlike anything I’d ever seen before. Five Tony Awards form quite a
resume but War Horse speaks for itself.”
As part of the program, students receive the same professional press materials that are
distributed to the Twin Cities media, attend Broadway Confidential talks for background on
the shows and are offered behind-the-scenes historical theatre tours. They also participate in
workshops with local theatre professionals such as Jeffrey Hatcher, an award-winning
Broadway and Off-Broadway playwright and screenwriter, and Star Tribune theatre critic
Graydon Royce.
We extend a special thanks to long time Trust Donors Fred and Ann Moore for their ongoing
financial support of Critical Review. Any metro area high school student is eligible to apply
for this free program. Registration for the 2013-14 school year will begin in early September.
To read student reviews or learn more about how you can help ensure that these experiences
remain available for Twin Cities high school students, please visit our website at
www.hennepintheatretrust.org.
Thank you for being here to “dream the dream” with one of the greatest productions ever
created. Enjoy the show!
Yours truly,

Thomas L. Hoch
