Integration of Elements/Principles of Art

● Appropriation

Since the activity directs the student to create a contemporary art inspired by a traditional
art, the Principle of Appropriation will be very evident in the created art. The chosen traditional
art is entitled ​Cry of Pugadlawin by Carlos “Botong” V. Francisco which mainly depicts the
historical event of Filipinos taking arms against the Spanish colonization. In this painting, it
glorifies the ​Katipuneros a​ s they rip their ​cedulas as the initiation of fighting for the country’s
freedom. However, in contemporary artwork, it is the exact opposite because it will visualize the
misogynistic nature of men as they rip their ​cedulas, ​which are represented by the uterus, to
glorify themselves as “men”. The ripping uterus is depicted to be in the form of rape as they
forcefully tear a women’s womanhood. In today’s society, there is a massive number of rape cases
in the Philippines which is why the group chose to represent the issue.

● Space

Since it is in the form of assemblage which consists of three-dimensional elements, it will


occupy space and can establish an engagement to the audience. The arrangement of materials and
space will allow the audience to interact with the artwork’s elements using the senses of touch and
vision. As different elements will be used, the multi-textural characteristic of the art will appeal to
the senses of touch of the audience. This three-dimensional art allows the audience to walk freely
around it in order to get a clearer view of the art.

● Hybridity

The artwork is in the form of an assemblage which is why the Principle of Hybridity will be
evidently applied. Since the topic is sensitive, the tone of creep and horror will be the main
depiction and representation of the artwork. To achieve this, the group will be using
unconventional materials such as; plastic bottles, used crayons, old magazines and many more.
With this kind of materials, the group will be able to represent each element with much
complexity since the shapes and color combinations formed will establish its own uniqueness from
other artworks. The group will be able to create an assemblage which is not totally appealing in
the first look, but exhibits its beauty of complexity as the viewer studies the artwork.

● Technology

The use of technology will not be fully evident in the artwork itself. Instead, the use of
technology can be used to set the ambiance of the artwork into a darker and creepier mood. Using
the manipulation of lights in a video presentation, this video will be projected as the artwork’s
spotlight which will exhibit greater impact for it builds the mood.

● Performance

The Principle of Performance, on the other hand, cannot be applied in the said assemblage
because in order to exhibit performance, it requires movement or an action in which an artwork
cannot do.

Q and A

1. What makes your artwork contemporary?

Contemporary art, by definition, is a form of art in which an artist expresses his/her ideas

An artwork, to be considered as contemporary art, must consist of the characteristics and


elements in it. The group modernized the depiction of the artwork ​Cry of Pugadlawin which is why
instead of using painting or sculpture they used another form of artwork which is assemblage. The
artwork is not confined in museums, it is exposed in public wherein it involves the connection between
the audience and the artwork itself. Comparing the assemblage to the others, it makes contemporary
since it is made at the present time and it developed elements from the existing artwork by Carlos
“Botong” V. Francisco, a national artist, which is the ​Cry of Pugadlawin. F​ urthermore, the artwork also
exhibits mainly two principles of contemporary arts namely; appropriation and hybridity. The Principle
of Appropriation is presented in the assemblage for its elements inspired in the original artwork but
depicts different messages for the audience. Hybridity on the other hand, is also exhibited since it will be
assembled using unconventional materials such as recycled papers and plastics. Furthermore the group,
as students, are the prime example of youths who are aware of the degrading issues that the country is
facing nowadays which is why they chose to represent the issue based on what the current setting is
representing.

2. How does your artwork contribute to building a culture of peace, development, and stewardship?

Seeing the past through art as our lenses, this artwork will demonstrate the silences of certain voices
from the Philippine history. The story behind this artwork is one of those which is about the historical
rape of Emilio Aguinaldo to Gregoria De Jesus, the Lakambini of Katipunan. This artwork likewise
promotes respect for all human rights that fully play a part in making peace and promoting humanity, as
it portrays termination of the past rape issue of Emilio Aguinaldo. It aims to diminish all maltreatment to
women, generally, all sexual violence. The artwork also depicts the crime committed by Emilio
Aguinaldo in ordering an execution to the leader of the Philippine Revolution, Andres Bonifacio along
with his brother Procopio which is against humanity. His betrayal to his fellow Filipinos proves how
inhumane people can be when blinded by greed for power. This lesson from the past builds our integrity
and character in order to restore our faith to humanity. Lastly, documenting the historical struggles of
Filipinos from Spanish colonization through this artwork will also foster a culture of stewardship. This
will help us remain good stewards of people, freedom and democracy. With the 333 years of oppression
to Filipinos, it teaches us to protect our nation, identity and also the right to vote for the greater benefit
of the country. The bystanders who did nothing as the Bonifacio brothers were being killed shown in the
artwork neglected their responsibility to defend the lives of their fellowmen. Ultimately, this artwork
through historical representations has the power to awaken the audience encouraging them to be the
change they want to experience.
