Moving from

Teacher-Centered to
Learner-Driven Instruction
Part I
When you hear the
term “Learner Profile”,
what comes to mind?
Developing a Learner Profile for
your students allows you to take a
whole child approach to teaching
and learning.
Key data to consider to know your students both as learners AND
individuals:
1. Demographic data
■ Living circumstances, learning history, potential barriers, and existing
supports for learning (e.g. LEP plans, 504 plans, & IEP’s).
2. Academic status
■ Data points including formative and summative assessments, artifacts of
learning, learning goals, and reflections, helping learners and educators to
know what they may be ready to learn next.
3. Learning-related skill set
■ Learner’s current capacity to learn: the learning tools, habits, strategies,
and skills the learner possesses that support effective and increasingly
independent learning.
4. Potential learning drivers
■ Learner’s aspirations, potential motivational hooks, current career plans.
LEARNER PROFILE SURVEY
The goal of the Learner Profile Survey is to determine students’ learning needs
and preferences in terms of:

- The Learning Environment

- Instructional Design
- Building/Strengthening Relationships

Giving students a Learner Profile Survey offers them an opportunity to have an

active voice in their learning. The more students are asked to consider who they
are as learners, the more self-aware they will become.
Empower learners to develop a deep understanding of
needs, interests and strengths around: academics and
approaches to learning, health & wellness,
social-emotional development, culture and language,
living situation and cognitive skills.
In fact, research on the importance of metacognitive thinking
supports the notion that instructional approaches that help
students reflect on their own learning processes are highly
beneficial to their overall learning and tend to stimulate
motivation to improve as learners (Brown, 1989; Marzano et al.,
1988).
