The steamboat Sultana was a Mississippi River paddle wheeler, destroyed in an explosion on 27 April, 1865. This resulted
in the greatest maritime disaster in United States history. An estimated 1,800 of the 2,400 passengers were killed when
one of the ship’s four boilers exploded, and the Sultana sank not far from Memphis, Tennessee.

The reason that this disaster was mostly forgotten by history is because it took place soon after the assassination of
President Abraham Lincoln, and during the closing weeks of the Civil War. Most of the new passengers were Union
soldiers, chie y from Ohio and just released from Confederate prison camps such as Cahaba and Andersonville. The US
government had contracted with the Sultana to transport these former prisoners of war back to their homes.

The cause of the explosion was a leaky and poorly repaired steam boiler. The boiler (or “boilers”) gave way when the
steamer was about 7 to 9 miles north of Memphis at 2:00 A.M. in a terri c explosion that sent some of the passengers on
deck into the water and destroyed a good portion of the ship. Hot coals scattered by the explosion soon turned the
remaining superstructure into an inferno, the glare of which could be seen in Memphis.

21  Why did the author write the text above?

A. To tell the cause of the Sultana’s explosion. D. To retell what happened at the end of Civil War.

B. To expose people who were killed during the re. E. To show one of great disasters in US history.

C. To picture the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.

Bullying in educational settings remains a commonplace everyday experience. The acts of bullying include a wide range
of malicious behaviors, including physical violence, threats, verbal mockery, ostracism, and rumors spread toward
vulnerable targets and typically repeated. Bullying among students is very dangerous. It can a ect not only the students
who get bullied but also the bullies, the witness of bullying, and the school itself as an educational institution.

The children and teenagers who get bullied might experience several mental problems, such as depression, anxiety,
increased feeling of sadness and loneliness, changes in sleep pattern, and loss of interest in particular activities that they
used to enjoy. These problems may be carried away until they grow to be an adult. Besides, physical violence in bullying
can lead to physical injuries.
The academic achievements of the victims will also get the impact. A UCLA study of 2.300 students in eleven middle
schools in Los Angeles found that a high level of bullying was associated with lower grades across three years of middle
schools. Students who were rated as the most bullied performed signi cantly worse academically than their peers.

Victims, however, are not the only ones who su er from bullying. While victims often fare the worst on a variety of
measures, pure bullies also experience di culties. They are at increased risk of some mental health problems and are
likely to encounter di culty maintaining positive relationships as adults. More signi cantly, bullies are considerably more
likely to behave roughly, get into ghts, be engaged into vandalism, abuse alcohol and drugs, as well as being convicted
of crimes.
Students who witness bullying have a big tendency to feel insecure when they are at school. They are also more likely to
have mental problems such as depression, anxiety feeling, and traumatic feeling from witnessing the incident. Moreover,
they are also at high risk of using drugs and alcohol to relieve their stress.

Ultimately, the school, where the act of bullying happens also can get the impacts. It makes the students feel insecure
and creates a non-conducive school environment, which leads to ine ective teaching and learning activities.
Furthermore, it makes morality education and spirit of learning at the school need to be questioned.

Based on several facts above, it is obvious that bullying among students is very dangerous. It can cause a physical and
mental health problem, quality declining in academic performance due to the ine ective teaching and learning activities,
and makes people doubt the role of the school in educating the students.

33.    The text is important for the readers, because it … .

A. tells why bullying happens at school D. makes people see the sign of bullying

B. informs how to prevent bullying E. pictures the e ect of bullying to students

C. explains why bullying is bad

35. This text is for questions number 33 - 35

35.    Teaching and learning activities are a ected … bullying gives signi cant impact to students.

A. although D. because

B. resulting E. eventually

C. moreover

I want you all to know that I am truly leaving here with mixed feelings; happy about my new career opportunity, but sad to

A thick, golden liquid produced by industrious bees, honey is made using the nectar of owering plants and is saved
inside the beehive for eating during times of scarcity. But how do bees make honey? (1)

Nectar — sugary liquid — is extracted from owers using a bee's long, tube-shaped tongue and stored in its extra
stomach, or "crop." While sloshing around in the crop, the nectar mixes with enzymes that transform its chemical
composition and pH, making it more suitable for long-term storage. (2)

When a honeybee returns to the hive, it passes the nectar to another bee by regurgitating the liquid into the other bee's
mouth. This regurgitation process is repeated until the partially digested nectar is nally deposited into a honeycomb. (3)

Once in the comb, nectar is still a viscous liquid — nothing like the thick honey you use at the breakfast table. To get all
that extra water out of their honey, bees set to work fanning the honeycomb with their wings in an e ort to speed up the
process of evaporation. (4)

When most of the water has evaporated from the honeycomb, the bee seals the comb with a secretion of liquid from its
abdomen, which eventually hardens into beeswax. Away from air and water, honey can be stored inde nitely, providing
bees with the perfect food source for cold winter months. (5)

But bees aren't the only ones with a sweet tooth. Humans, bears, badgers and other animals have long been raiding the
winter stores of their winged friends to harvest honey. (6)

In fact, until sugar became widely available in the sixteenth century, honey was the world's principal sweetener, with
ancient Greece and Sicily among the best-known historical centers of honey production. (7)

Honey's color, taste, aroma and texture vary greatly depending on the type of ower a bee frequents. Clover honey, for
example, di ers greatly from the honey harvested from bees that frequent a lavender eld. (8)

38.    Why is the text bene cial for the readers?
