RESEARCH: Professor Jain has been very keenly involved in research work. He started these activities
in 1970 and has carried out several research and documentation studies. Some of the
studies are:
1. ‘Generic Form’, a study of settlements in Kutch. It was sponsored by Ford Foundation
and was carried out at the School of Planning, Ahmedabad, 1972-73
2. Morphostructure of Cities in Rajasthan. This was also done at the School of Planning
with a grant from Ford Foundation. 1973-74.
3. Habitat’ - a comprehensive study of Arts, Crafts and Architecture of rural; habitat. The
study was sponsored by NID, Ahmedabad.
4. Typology and Mapping of Housing Zones - a study of the western arid zone of India.
This was jointly done with Mrs. Minakshi Jain

SEMINARS: Lectured and participated in several seminars and conferences organized by national and

1. ‘Urbanization in India’ - Seminars organized for Fulbright Alumni India, and by USEFI in
Mysore in 1972. Presented a paper.
2. Conservation of Monuments and Sites - Seminar organized by Max Mueller Bhawan at
Hyderabad in 1977. Paper on ‘Urban Conservation’ published in a Special Report on
the seminar.
3. ‘Conservation’ - Seminar organized by Max Mueller Bhawan in New Delhi in 1978.
Paper on ‘Conservation of Landscape Resources’ published in a special publication of
the Max Mueller Bhawan.

HERITAGE
PROJECTS: 1. Fatehpur Sikri: Integrated Conservation and Development Plan 1977-1980.
Prepared by: National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad
Principal, Consultant to National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad.
The integrated plan was prepared to check disruptive forces in the unmaking of this unique
historical heritage. At Fatehpur Sikri, there is a scope to conserve historic monuments and
to develop three bordering villages, and to plan for tourism facilities.
2. Nagarjun Sagar: Environmental and Tourism Plan - Jan 1988
Sponsored by: Andra Pradesh Travel and Tourism Development Corporation Ltd.
Prepared by: National Institute of Design
Worked as Principal Consultant to National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad
Environmental Development of Nagarjun Sagar and its surrounding areas hings on two key
factors. One is that of the historic structure and other is the ecological and landscape
quality of the lake itself. The report drafts the environmental control as well as a sketch
design for tourist complex at Anupu.
3. Hampi - Heritage Conservation and Development Plan - 1989

Prepared by: National Institute of Design
Principal Consultant to National Institute of Design.
This Integrated Master Plan for the world heritage site of Hampi Vijaynagar consisted of
architectural conservation, archaeological exploration and environmental development.
This report has struck a balance between the requirements of tourism, the compulsions of
pilgrimage and the conservation of great heritage.
4. Chidambaram, Pitchavaram and Tranquebar
Project Sponsored by: Department of Tourism Government of India for Tamilnadu.-1991
Project prepared by National Institute of Design
Chidambaram a site of famous temple also needed the development plan to keep sanctity
and sacredness of this religious and heritage property.
Pintchavram is an ecologically fragile area where the mangroves offer a beautiful setting.
But here the plant life of mangroves is threatened. The report describes batter standards of
environment.
Tranquebar is a queen of coromandal coasts. It’s a Danish settlement where the
architecture is unique. The report details the salient features and documents the present
conditions.
This project report seeks to look at the development of Historic City which has numerous
heritage buildings, construction systems, traditional traffic pattern, unique water systems,
a castle.
