Overview
PI ProcessBook is a graphics package that allows users to create dynamic,
interactive graphics and trends featuring real-time PI data. Data can be viewed from
multiple sources, such as relational databases that expose ODBC compliant
interfaces, or AF 2.x data. Additionally, PI ProcessBook provides tools for analyzing
data on the display and incorporates Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA),
so that special activities or routine chores can be automated.
This version of PI ProcessBook provides the following enhancements:
 Create reusable AF-based symbols to represent your PI Asset Framework
elements
AF-based symbols are customized and assigned to AF elements so that you
can drag and drop the AF element onto displays from your AF Browser.
 Convert PI ProcessBook displays created with AF Modeler
Displays created with the AF Modeler are automatically converted to your
current display format.
 Launch PI Coresight analyses from PI ProcessBook displays
You can select one or more elements within a display and then launch a PI
Coresight analysis with a single click.

Please read the online help for additional information on these topics.

Enhancements

 Coresight Add-In
The PI Coresight Link add-in provides a means to create a Coresight (ad-hoc) display
using tags referenced by the currently selected symbols or all symbols of the active PI
ProcessBook display.
When the menu item is clicked, an ad-hoc PI Coresight display is generated and
displayed in the default web browser on the user’s machine. The ad-hoc Coresight
display consists of a trend symbol configured with all unique tags referenced by the
currently selected dynamic symbols – or all dynamic symbols if no symbols are
currently selected – contained in the active PI ProcessBook display.

 AF Display Builder Add-In

The AF Display Builder Add-In allows users to build visualizations of assets
(including the dynamic elements) and then associate that visualization with either a
specific asset or template. These AF Display Builder AF Elements are created from
templates in AF (PI System Explorer) and are then assigned visualizations in PI
ProcessBook (via the add-in). This is done without the need to make changes to the
AF assets from PI ProcessBook. The goal is to make ad-hoc visualization and display
building easy enough that IT resources are not needed.

 Convert PI ProcessBook displays created with AF Modeler

As part of the introduction of the AF Display Builder Add-In, displays created
previously with the legacy AF Modeler will automatically be upgraded to the new AF
Display Builder format. This allows for quick and easy migration of displays already
created via AF Modeler.

Known Issues
This section lists problems and enhancements that have been deferred until a future
release.
 If you are a user of Sigmafine and the AF Modeler, be aware that the AF
Modeler is not compatible with this version of PI ProcessBook when the AF
Display Builder is enabled. To continue using the AF Modeler, disable the AF
Display Builder using the Tools>Add-in Manager dialog before opening any
Sigmafine displays. Clear the checkboxes for Loaded/Unloaded and Load on
Startup for the AF Display Builder.
If you are not using Sigmafine and want to upgrade displays to use the new
PI ProcessBook functionality, you should manually uninstall the AF Modeler
add-in before installing PI ProcessBook 2014.
 Automatic updating of displays can result in configuration loss and is mostly
seen in trends, xy-plots, and multi-state dynamic symbols. These
configurations can be reapplied and do not result in a loss of data.

OSIsoft Release Notes 3

 The Data Sheet Control versions 1.0 and 2.0.0.20 are incompatible with PI
ProcessBook 2012 SP2. Version 2.0.1.0 of the Data Sheet Control is
compatible with PI ProcessBook 2014.
 Contextual help fails to open a direct link to the help topic. The workaround is
to use the index and search features available in the PI ProcessBook Users
Guide available under Help->PI ProcessBook Help or by pressing F1 at any
time.
 PI BatchView versions 3.1.05 and later may have an issue with a non-default
path to pihome. The issue is due to registry files not cleaning up properly
during uninstall of PI BatchView which can result in issues installing PI
BatchView later.
 Saving a PDI with Datasets as SVG could result in Traces not displaying
properly on trends.
 At time of release of PI ProcessBook 2014, Internet Explorer 9 and earlier do
not support the PI Coresight Link. Please use Internet Explorer 10 or later for
PI Coresight functionality.
 SVG files saved with the old AF Modeler cannot be imported by AF Display
Builder because AF1 datasets are no longer supported in ProcessBook 2014.
Use the PDI format instead for these displays.
 In upgrade scenarios, PI ProcessBook may initiate a self-repair on initial
startup. This is expected and is not an issue with the installation
 When using PI ProcessBook 2014 on a Russian language system, clicking
the Time Range button creates an error if any time is selected in that window
due to a problem with the default settings.
 PI ProcessBook does not support MFC-based ActiveX controls created with
Microsoft Visual Studio 2005. ActiveX controls created with Visual Studio
2005 should be based on ATL or should override
COleControl::OnSetObjectRects in ctlinplc.cpp with a version based on MFC
version 7.
 The servers dropdown and Unit Name Mask Selection dialog in PI
BatchView will cause Data Execution Protection (DEP) exceptions if DEP is
configured for OptOut and AlwaysOn (See
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875352). A new version of PI BatchView (PI
BatchView 2012 v3.1.5) without this limitation is available.
 To use the IT OverView v1.3 add-in for PI ProcessBook on operating
systems that restrict file operations on folders under “Program Files”
(Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and later) PI
ProcessBook must be run in XP compatibility mode. An updated add-in is
expected.
 Older versions (3.2 and prior) of PI ActiveView should be uninstalled prior to
installing PI ProcessBook 2014. If PI ProcessBook 2014 and PI
ActiveView are to be installed on the same system, then a matching version
of PI ActiveView must be used. Only PI ActiveView 2014 can co-exist with PI

OSIsoft Release Notes 4

ProcessBook 2014 on the same system. Different versions will support the
same displays, but they cannot be installed on the same machine.
 On systems missing a .NET 3.5 update, the .NET 4.0 installation will trigger a
REBOOT request. The presented option to ‘Continue’ should not be selected.
REBOOT the machine and rerun setup to complete the installation.
 Visual Basic 6 add-ins compiled with previous versions of PI ProcessBook
may experience errors when run on recent versions of Microsoft Windows
(Vista, 2008 Server and later) with PI ProcessBook 2014. The typical error is
a display object reference error. The problem is the result of needed changes
to the display object interfaces and can be corrected by either recompiling the
add-in or running PI ProcessBook 2014 in XP compatibility mode.
 Large integer values on Trend: scales, legends, cursors and tooltips will
not be displayed using Scientific Notation if Database format is selected.
(SCR 33103)
 The PI ProcessBook MUI kit does not need to be uninstalled if upgrading
from PI ProcessBook 2012 SP1 or later. If upgrading from PI ProcessBook
2012 or earlier, then previous versions of the PI ProcessBook MUI kit should
be manually uninstalled prior to upgrading to PI ProcessBook 2014.
 With PI SDK v1.4.2.445 the Server Alias, often used in Batch processes, may
have an erroneous value (i.e. 0). This results in no data being seen on Batch
Trends that use the server-alias and other issues. This can be corrected by
deleting any such values using the About-PISDK executable. Additional
information and updates on this problem are posted on the OSIsoft Technical
Support web site – reference KB00810.
Note that once a Module Relative Display is upgraded to an Element Relative
Display, the display will not show data for Element Relative dynamic symbols in
versions of PI ProcessBook prior to 3.2.

Punch List Items Description

(PLI) not addressed
14770OSI8 Provide a mechanism for adding a time-stamp to a
display.
16744OSI8 Enhancement request: allow tag description to be
multiple lines in the Trend legend.

OSIsoft Release Notes 5

Punch List Items Description
(PLI) not addressed
16806OSI8 Non-updating trend symbols will not show newly
updated points or value attributes unless the trend
is reverted. Updating trends, an End Time of *, that
have the PB2TraceCompatibility INI setting turned
on will not display new annotations of existing PI
data in the status area of the trend unless the trend
is reverted. This is due to the annotation event for
existing PI data only being available through the
archive event pipe which is not available by default
(PB2TraceCompatibility=1) . Setting the
PB2TraceCompatibility to off (0) enables the
archive event pipe and the trend will display the
new annotation.
17783OSI8 The details window only exports data to the
clipboard in time order.
17785OSI8 The Details add-in may stop scrolling if too many
19072OSI8 rows or sort order is changed.
19663OSI8
18598OSI8 Displays with Button symbols created in PI
ProcessBook version 3.0.x and subsequently
saved using this newer version can no longer be
used with 3.0.x.
18997OSI8 Enhancement request: on Trends with the show
multiple scales options selected - highlighting the
trace should also highlight the scale.
19072OSI8 Enhancement request: When a Trend is selected
21852OSI8 for use with the Details add-in - the selected Data
item should be highlighted in the Trend.
19090OSI8 Linear Regression information should be displayed
by the Details add-in and available via automation.
19177OSI8 The List Box ActiveX control will not print properly
when contained in a PI ProcessBook display.
19487OSI8 PI ProcessBook request exclusive access to
display on a network share - this can cause access
problems when users running in view-only mode
attempts to open them.
19668OSI8 The literals: TagZero and TagSpan, as used by the
Bar symbol, are not preserved when a display is
saved as SVG.
19930OSI8 When a PI ProcessBook Trend is embedded in
another OLE application, the trend may not get
updates if PI ProcessBook is minimized.
20053OSI8 Use of the display's resize cursor while showing an
unpinned docking window can cause a crash.
20415OSI8 Enhancement request: provide an option to use an
Arc symbol's LINE as the Multi-State object.

OSIsoft Release Notes 6

Punch List Items Description
(PLI) not addressed
20591OSI8 Displays with Connectors to Symbol Library or
grouped symbols will get an erroneous error when
saved as SVG.
20605OSI8 A valid SQC filter equation will fail syntax validation
when the Recorded Values call yields a raw data
point count greater than the ArcMaxCollect
parameter for any PI Tag in the filter equation.
20682OSI8 Maximizing very small SQC symbols may truncate
some fields.
20709OSI8 PI ProcessBook ad hoc trends should use the
default time zone selection specified in
Preferences.
20734OSI8 Errors relating to ".NET Runtime 2.0 Error" that
occur when PI ProcessBook initializes may be the
result of a corrupted PBToolBarConfig.ini (found in
the users 'application data' folder) - rename the file
and restart PI ProcessBook.
20737OSI8 With the PI ProcessBook Trend - if the start-time is
fixed and the end-time is dynamic then the vertical
time grid-lines will begin to compress around the
start-time.
21115OSI8 Cannot properly resize an object with scripting
because ViewWidth and ViewHeight are fired after
the Resize event has fired
21212OSI8 PI ProcessBook may present an error while editing
a ProcessBook Entry in Outline mode - any text
entries should be completed by using the ENTER
key, not the Tab key.
21224OSI8 Use of the polyline symbol to draw a straight line
can cause problems when grouped with other
polylines.
21346OSI8 Undoing changes to a maximized trend locks the
PI ProcessBook display.
21354OSI8 Enhancement request: provide mechanism for the
migration of AF servers from Server A (Test) to
Server B (Production) for PI ProcessBook displays.
21412OSI8 SQC Alarm Not Generated When PV goes above
the UCL.
21836OSI8 Use of the "Item Definition" icon to remove a trace
will break the Data Source connection with Details
add-in.
21946OSI8 When a display is opened, PI ProcessBook
attempts to sign up for updates from all the PI Tags
in the display. If the user does not have rights to all
the Tags, the sign up fails and requests for new
data fail for the entire list of Tags.
21978OSI8 SQC chart tag using an ODBC dataset does not
always display start and end times correctly.

OSIsoft Release Notes 7

Punch List Items Description
(PLI) not addressed
22131OSI8 The "y = mx + b" regression line variables should
be shown by trend cursors. This information is also
missing from the XYPlot regression line tooltip.
22515OSI8 The trend's SetTagName & SetTimeRange
24846OSI8 methods should not reset the scale settings.
22613OSI8 Changes to a Trend's plot title are not updated until
the display is saved and reopened.
22692OSI8 The symbol selected rectangle may change color
(should be red if background is not red) if display
colors are changed.
22759OSI8 PI ProcessBook Playback Period Start and End
time does not support PI relative time formats.
22773OSI8 The "Last Saved By" PI Property is not properly
updated when saving a display.
22817OSI8 Displays with larger amounts of VBA code can
become corrupted (references to the display object
will fail) after it has been edited many times. The
remedy is to copy the display's symbols and VBA
code to a new display.
22818OSI8 The font size of Microsoft Forms controls may vary
between Build and Run mode.
22865OSI8 The Details add-in statistics option's count field
should show the number of events not the number
of seconds, but PI ProcessBook does not support
event-weighted aggregations.
22884OSI8 The selection of heavy lines in the PI ProcessBook
trend may result in the trace not being drawn,
depending on the scale factor being used.
23043OSI8 The Define Trend dialog cannot be used to change
a Dataset’s server.
23136OSI8 Implement the STEPPED option with AF2
Datasets.
23180OSI8 The PI ProcessBook trend, showing multiple
scales, should hide redundant scale values when
zoomed and the differences between the scales’
values are less than the precision settings of the
format string.
23181OSI8 When the tag value equals the max scale value
(over the time range of the trend) the color blind
markers disappear from the trace.
23206OSI8 Plot values for a trend that are much larger than
the manually assigned max value (by a magnitude
of 4) can cause a significant processing load.
23273OSI8 Enhancement request: provide a way for users to
specify the algorithm for the shortening of long
elements names when displayed and when used in
sorting.

OSIsoft Release Notes 8

Punch List Items Description
(PLI) not addressed
23339OSI8 Provide a means for AF Formula References to
make use of the same time zone being used for
other data on a ProcessBook display.
23395OSI8 Multistate customization (number of states and
22665OSI8 colors) will be lost when Module Relative Displays
(MRD) are converted to Element Relative Displays
(ERD). They can also be lost when doing a
copy/paste of the symbol. This is because the
multi-state considers that a new data item has
been configured and resets itself.
23495OSI8 AF Error messages can overlay/hide adjacent
symbols.
23516OSI8 The display_activate event is not being fired when
focus is returned to PI ProcessBook from another
application.
24155OSI8 Enhancement request: Support the special case in
21412OSI8 the SQC symbol when UCL=CL and/or LCL=CL,
the data points should be evaluated as "out-of-
control" to match the server behavior.
24312OSI8 The context menu is not displaying icons.
24788OSI8 In the Details add-in the row height should be
adjusted when the font size changes.
24877OSI8 In Element Relative displays - changing to a new
context does not clear the value of attributes that
do not exist in that context - expect that No Data
should be shown, instead the last value remains.
25731OSI8 Displays with AF Summary functions created using
PI ProcessBook 3.2 are incorrectly created as
Summary Datasets and may present problems
when used with an ad-hoc trend in PI ProcessBook
2012 SP2.

Internal Description
Issues
(SCR #)
32954 PI SDK v1.4.0.418 erroneously reports “Already installed” on setup
flash screen.
32811 In some localized operating system versions (seen in Japanese and
Korean Windows XP) the use of the Assign Shortcut menu item will
cause PI ProcessBook to crash.

OSIsoft Release Notes 9

Internal Description
Issues
(SCR #)
23907 In Windows XP or Vista, using any Desktop Theme other than
Windows Classic, the first tab of the VBA color palette does not
render correctly. It appears blank, yet still selects a color if clicked on.
The second tab (System Colors) works fine. The VBA color palette
appears both in the VBA editor when changing the colors of forms
and controls as well as in PI ProcessBook when changing colors of
ActiveX control symbols in the Properties dialog.

In order to clearly see these dialogs, you need to disable support for
Desktop Themes by setting the EnableXPThemes key to 0 in the
[Startup] section of the ProcessBook.INI file.
24406 Trace rendering issues have been seen in which the plot markers do
not appear on the trace and a segment of the trace polyline appears
in the wrong location. The problem occurs if the segment is
represented by a data point whose start time occurs far before the
start time of the trend. The ratio of trend duration to the distance from
the previous data point is less than approximately 0.0000013 (or less
than a ratio of 30 seconds to 9 months). For example, the data is:
1/1/2007, value 10 and 10/1/2007 0:01 value 20 and the trend is
defined from 10/1/2007 0:00:45 to 10/1/2007 0:01:15. In this case, the
data values are 9 months apart and a trend is 30 seconds in duration
centering on the second data point. In this case, the trace may not
appear on the markers. The markers are located where the trace
should be.
24783 There are occasions when a Trend's trace remains highlighted, for
example, when quickly moving the mouse off of a trend. Just move
the mouse back onto the trend to reset the highlight.
25417 Enhancement request: provide statistical tooltips for grouped
symbols.
25819 The PI Properties tab, an extension to the Window's File Properties,
will incorrectly count the number of scripts in a PIW and counts may
be blank until the file is resaved. On 64 bit Operating systems
Windows Explorer does not show the PI Properties tab.
25894 The Details add-in does not support dataset names that look like tag
names, e.g. \\server\tagname.
25967 When right clicking a PI ProcessBook file and selecting Open With -
two PI ProcessBook selections are shown - "PI ProcessBook File
Starter" is the proper selection.
25971 Tooltip shown on Trends and XY Plots at the intersection point of
many different tags can create very large tooltips that may not fit
optimally on the screen. Under certain circumstances, this can cause
the tip to repeatedly flash on and off. A workaround is to reconfigure
tooltip statistics or completely disable Tooltip Statistics.
26242 If PI ProcessBook is uninstalled on a system with PI ActiveView, the
PI ActiveView installation should be repaired to ensure proper
functionality. The repair needs to be done to support non-
administrative users.

OSIsoft Release Notes 10

Internal Description
Issues
(SCR #)
26266 On the aggregate Shewhart charts in the SQC symbol, the trend
cursor does not match the value in the raw data grid because many
raw points are used to calculate the plotted point values. In the plot
data grid, the cursor does not work at all.
26315 Plot symbols that use traces in different time zones may not show the
proper time-zone based times in the Details window and cursors.
26493 The center line edges are not drawn at step changes for SQC charts
using a center line defined by a PI Tag that is stepped.
26561 If an attribute of an element accesses a server that requires a
password the PI Server must be connected to show data for the
attribute.
26617 Files created in PI ProcessBook 2.11 that are upgraded to 3.0.15.9
that contain standalone file links (<path to
display>\DISPLAY:DISPLAY.PDI) or embedded display links (<path
to procbook>\PROCBOOK:DISPLAY) do not work correctly in PI
ProcessBook 2012 SP2. The following VBA code can be used to fix
the links:
Dim oButton as Button
Dim oButtonDefinition as ButtonDefinition

Set oButton = Symbols(?<Button object name>?)

Set oButtonDefinition = oButton.GetDefinition

If oButtonDefinition.Action = ?? Then ? if the action property is blank

oButtonDefinition.Action = ?<path to the target>?
oButton.SetDefinition oButtonDefinition ? set modified definition back
to the button
End If
26618 If a display has dynamic symbols that are using a custom dataset,
and the custom dataset is removed, the dynamic symbols do not
update. The display must be refreshed to show BAD DATA. If the
dataset is reloaded, the display must be reverted to obtain new data.
26619 When tags are renamed on a PI server, datasets using those PI tags
are not able to resolve the renamed tag when the display is opened.
Symbols using these datasets show "No Data". The datasets must be
redefined with the new tag name manually.
26620 PI ProcessBook does not support leading and/or trailing spaces in the
name of the Value column of a PI Expression dataset.
In addition, a server name must be specified when creating a PI
Expression dataset through automation.
26621 Times displayed in the SQC control limits always use the client's time
zone.
26622 The Details add-in does not support showing Y tags with duplicate
data sources for an XY Plot symbol. Only one entry for each unique Y
tag name is shown in the data source drop-down list. However,
selecting Show All from the add-in's data source list shows results for
each tag including duplicates.

OSIsoft Release Notes 11

Internal Description
Issues
(SCR #)
26623 To ensure file compatibility concerning file/button links between PI
ProcessBook 3.0.15.x and PI ProcessBook 2012 SP2, files should not
be moved from their original location when the link relies on an
absolute (c:\<filename>) reference to a file. If the source and target
files must be moved, and the file must be updated, then the file
should only be opened in PI ProcessBook 3.1 or higher from that
point forward.
26625 In the Save As dialog, you cannot browse to an http or ftp location.
Instead, to save a file to an http or ftp location, type-in the fully
qualified path, e.g. http://servername/display.pdi.
26630 PI ProcessBook may show a message stating "Please wait while
Windows configures Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007" during
the first run of PI ProcessBook, if Microsoft Office 2007 is installed,
but has not yet been configured.
26631 A display should be reverted if a PI Server used by the display is
manually disconnected and reconnected using the Connections
dialog so that data updates are received.
26634 Statistics for XY Plot symbols are shown when the symbol is
configured to show the server and tag name in the legend. If the
server or tag name is not in the legend, statistics are not shown.
26635 Trace rendering issues have been seen in which the plot markers do
not appear on the trace and a segment of the trace line appears in the
wrong location. The problem occurs if the segment is represented by
a data point whose start time occurs far before the start time of the
trend. Also, the ratio of trend duration to the distance from the
previous data point is less than approximately 0.0000013 (or less
than a ratio of 30 seconds to 9 months). For example, the data is:
1/1/2007, with a value of 10 and current time is 10/1/2007 0:01 with a
value of 20 and the trend is defined from 10/1/2007 0:00:45 to
10/1/2007 0:01:15. In this case, the data values are 9 months apart
and a trend is 30 seconds in duration centering on the second data
point. In this case, the trace may not appear on the markers. The
markers are located where the trace should be.
26636 It is possible for the correlation coefficient to be truncated on an XY
plot. Once the symbol is selected the coefficient appears correctly.
26637 If an AF attribute accesses a PI tag that is on a PI Server but the PI
Server is not in the Known Servers Table, the attribute will report that
the server could not be found. The PI Server should be entered into
the Known Servers Table and PI ProcessBook restarted.
26770 PI ProcessBook's unpinned docking windows may not dock as
expected on secondary displays on multiple monitor systems. This is
true on only those screens aligned above or to the left of Windows'
primary display. The tab shown for unpinned windows can appear
pushed over by other pinned windows. It's recommended to either
keep all docking windows pinned or unpinned when running PI
ProcessBook on secondary monitors.

OSIsoft Release Notes 12

Internal Description
Issues
(SCR #)
26947 The Details add-in needs to be restarted using the Tools | Add-In
Manger... menu item when the Data option stops showing data.
Select the Details item from the Available Add-Ins list and uncheck
and then re-check the Loaded/Unloaded checkbox.
26995 In Book view it may be necessary to resize the window to see all
Tabs.
27091 An error dialog can appear when creating a dynamic symbol if the
default server requires a password. This only occurs the first time the
default server is connected. Acknowledging the error dialog box
allows you to continue to enter a password and configure the dynamic
symbol.
27191 The AF Data Set Add-In works with the SQC symbol with the
following constraint's The "N samples before end time" query is
evaluated only within an eight hour period.
27192 The AF Modeler Add-In works with the SQC symbol with the following
constraints' 1) The "N samples before end time" query is evaluated
only within an eight hour period, 2) When the AF attribute points to a
fast updating PI tag, some snapshot values may be lost.
27243 After importing a display containing an XY plot from an SVG file, be
sure to Revert the XY plot symbol to activate all its settings after the
import. Currently, data is retrieved before all the symbol properties
are set, so there may be unexpected results in the symbol before a
Revert action.
27443 Users who desire to maintain any toolbar changes made in 2.x can
restore these settings after upgrading. The 2.x toolbar customizations
are maintained in a file named PBToolbarConfig.ini located under the
Windows user's ProcessBook Application Data folder. This file from
2.x will normally be located in c:\Documents and
Settings\username\Application Data\PI System\PI-ProcessBook in
Windows XP. In Windows Vista under c:\Users\username\ Application
Data\PI System\PI-ProcessBook. Manually copying this file into the
language sub folder (EN for English systems) will restore any
customized menus and toolbars from 2.x. Toolbars positions will not
match 100% from 2.x and will have to manually be repositioned when
running ProcessBook the first time after copying the file.

If at all possible it is recommended to manually re-customize the

toolbars and menus inside ProcessBook 2012 SP2 and not import
settings from 2.x as detailed above.
27504 The status bar indicator may flash even after an initial problem has
been corrected until the next data update occurs.
27556 If a trend is configured with traces from different time zones the
statistics shown in the tooltip for a trace that is in a different time zone
than the first trace will be incorrect if the time range of the trend is
changed at run time.

first be repaired and then PI ProcessBook to restore PI BatchView
functionality in PI ProcessBook. If you are reinstalling PI BatchView it
may be necessary (error 1722) to uninstall/reinstall PI ProcessBook
before PI BatchView.
28062 Shortcut keys for Menu items created through VBA do not work.
28698 Redundant warning messages may be seen when user opens a PDI
with tags they are not authorized to see.
28861 SQC does not adhere to the ArcMaxCollect server parameter.
29942 The ability to select a database, using the AF2 Dataset, will be lost if
previously all AF database references have been removed. To
correct, delete the AFDataset.dll.config file from the user's roaming

machines to take advantage of the PI Coresight interaction with PI ProcessBook.

Notes for Administrators

The OSIsoft pre-requisite kit should be installed on a target system before silently
installing PI ProcessBook. For silent installations with Active Directory Group Policy,
please consult Support Solution 3136OSI8: “How to Deploy Products with Active
Directory Group Policy”.

OSIsoft Release Notes 15

To invoke a silent installation, enter the command ‘setup.exe –f silent.ini’. The
silent.ini file can be customized to provide default a PI Server configuration setting as
follows:
[COMMANDLINE]
7 = /qn REBOOT=Suppress ALLUSERS=1 PI_SERVER= localhost
PI_ALIAS=localhost PI_TYPE=3 PI_PORT=5450 PI_USER=piadmin
INSTALLDIR="C:\Program Files\PIPC"
9 = /qn REBOOT=Suppress ALLUSERS=1 PI_SERVER= localhost
PI_ALIAS=localhost PI_TYPE=3 PI_PORT=5450 PI_USER=piadmin
INSTALLDIR="C:\Program Files\PIPC"

The two lines above are the only lines that should be changed in the silent.ini file
delivered with PI ProcessBook. localhost entries for the PI SDK, components 7 and
9, should be changed to reference the appropriate PI server.
NOTE: This version of PI ProcessBook requires .NET version 4, which requires a
reboot of the system. In order to do a silent installation this version of .NET must
already be present on the target system.
For information on installing PI ProcessBook using Microsoft’s System Management
Server technology, please see the following documents. A patch for the PI SDK in
this installation kit is a separate DLL the resolves a PI SDKregistry issue (WI65835).
Using an automated technology that includes this DLL may require a different
strategy.

Operating Systems

The following operating system platforms (with minimum Service Pack requirements
noted, where they apply) are supported:
 Windows 2003 Server R2
 Windows Vista
 Windows Server 2008
 Windows 7
 Windows 8
 Windows Server 2012
 Windows 8.1
Note that saving a file in Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 2008/2012 to a
restricted area, e.g. Program Files\PIPC, results in the file being stored in the users
Virtual Store folder although PI ProcessBook continues to report that the file is saved
in the restricted area.

Microsoft Vista and later

The Allow button must be clicked in order to repair or remove PI ProcessBook when
UAC is turned on.
UAC should be disabled to ensure successful deployment using silent installation.
Otherwise, elevated permission dialogs can be displayed by the operating system.

Shared and Administrator Installs

PI ProcessBook 2014 does not support Administrator or Shared installation types, as

were available in versions prior to 3.0.x.

System Prerequisites

OSIsoft products and their installation depend on operating system components such
as Microsoft run time libraries, the Windows Installer engine, .NET Framework, and
other operating system redistributable packages. These operating system
components are available in three prerequisite setup kits. All three setup kits contain
both 32 and 64-bit redistributables.

 Online: Recommended for installation on a computer connected to the

internet. Portions of this kit connect to Microsoft sites and download Microsoft
.NET components for the operating system on which it is run.
 Standalone: Recommended for installation on a computer that cannot
connect to Microsoft downloads or if such connection is not desirable. This kit
does not connect to download sites, but is much larger.
 Legacy: For older operating systems or product distributions that do not
require the .NET Framework 3.5.

OSIsoft Release Notes 17

To ensure that all necessary prerequisite components are installed, OSIsoft product
setup kits check for dependent components. If a dependency is missing, the
installation will exit, and the user will need to install prerequisites.
See the Prerequisite Kits page on the OSIsoft Tech Support Web site for more
information.

Server Platforms

PI ProcessBook communicates with recent versions of PI Servers. On Windows and

UNIX, PI Server 2012 or higher is recommended.
High Availability features require PI Server 3.4.375 or later.
Integrated Windows Security requires PI Server 3.4.380 or later.
Annotations are fully supported, read and write, with PI Server 3.3.362.61 and
higher.
Migration of Module Relative Displays to Element Relative Displays requires the
migration performed with PI Server 2010 (3.5) or later.
PI2 Servers on OpenVMS are not supported as of Platform Release 1 (PI
ProcessBook 3.0.15.7 PR1).

Hardware Requirements

Physical Memory: Minimum 128 MB; Recommended 512 MB. Although 128 MB
provides acceptable performance for many, increasing the available RAM improves
performance, especially when there are multiple applications running simultaneously
on the same machine.
Processor Speed: Pentium III CPU or better. A faster processor may help
performance if displays have complex calculations performed locally, but increasing
the installed RAM is more likely to help with general performance.
Hard Disk Space: 300 MB of empty space on the system drive for application files
and registry entries.

In addition to the drive space required for the application files and registry entries,
there must also be enough space available to keep a backup copy of the pisdk.msi
and ProcessBook.msi files. Even after the product is uninstalled the backup copy still
exists. This copy is deleted only when the system is rebooted.

Software Requirements

Only the OSIsoft and Microsoft components previously identified are required to run
PI ProcessBook.

Distribution Kit Files

AF SDK is version 2.5.2.5396

Note that the setup kit includes Microsoft Office Primary Interop Assembly (PIA) for
Office XP (Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.dll) for use with Notifications.

Upgrading from a Previous Version

If you have a previous version of PI ProcessBook installed on your computer, you

should upgrade that version with the released version instead of removing it. During
the installation of PI ProcessBook, the uninstall program of the version previously
installed is automatically run, but you will not lose your settings in the .INI files.
Upgrades are supported for PI ProcessBook 3.0.x and above.
If the startup file for the current release of PI ProcessBook is PIDEMO.PIW, the
upgrade to PI ProcessBook 2014 might not find the PIDEMO.PIW file on startup. The
reason this file might not be found is that this file has been moved to <PIPC
home>\procbook\en starting with release 3.1 of PI ProcessBook. To stop this error
from displaying when starting PI ProcessBook either specify another startup file or
update the location of the PIDEMO.PIW file to <PIPC home>\procbook\en using the
Tools | Preference menu item.

OSIsoft Release Notes 19

Uninstalling PI ProcessBook

PI ProcessBook can be removed from your system by selecting it for removal in the
Add/Remove Programs utility in Control Panel for Windows 2003, or the Programs
and Features Control Panel for Windows Vista/Windows Server 2008 or later. You
must have administrator privileges on your machine to successfully uninstall PI
ProcessBook.
If PI ProcessBook is uninstalled on a system with PI ActiveView, the PI ActiveView
installation should be repaired to ensure proper functionality. The repair needs to be
done to support non-administrator users.
