Measuring Tools

1. Tape Measure – a flexible measuring device used in taking body measurements. The full length measures 50 cm. and 60 inches.
2. Sewing Gauge – It is used for measuring hem line, button holes, and areas which are required for checking such as pleats & tucks.
Drafting Tools
3. Ruler – it is a 12inch clear or solid ruler. It is useful for measuring, connecting, marking & dwg straight seam line or cutting line.
4. Yardstick –. It is used for marking hemlines and checking lines when laying out a pattern.
5. L – square or Tailor’s square –has two arms connected perpendicular which measures 24 inches and 14 inches.
6. French Curve – It is used to shape depth of the neckhole and armhole of the pattern.
7. Hip Curve – It is used for shaping the hip and skirt hemline
8. Hem marker – an accurate guide for measuring and marking hemlines
Cutting Tools
1. Bent handled dressmaker’s shears - It is 7 to 12 inches long made of quality steel and hold sharp cutting edge.
2. Pinking shears – This is a popular in zigzagging or scalloped edge used for seam finish and raw edges.

4. Thread clippers – handy little spring loaded cutting tool that allows for snipping of threads and not designed to cut fabric
5. Seam ripper – are specifically designed for ripping out stitches from seams as a result of error and alterations.
6. Rotary cutter and mat – it is like a pizza cutter used by left or right handed sewers.
Marking tools – tools which requires transferring pattern markings to garment fabric pieces and for making alterations on garments.
1. Chalk pencil/ dressmaker’s pencil – it is used for marking directly on the fabric and has an erasing brush at one end.
2. Liquid marking pen - There are 2 types: One that washes out and one that fades after 48 hours.
3. Tailor’s Chalk - it is available in a range of colors. It used for marking directly on the fabric.
4. Wax Chalk – it is available in black or white. It is used for woolen fabrics. It can be removed by pressing
5. Tracing wheel – There are 2 types – 1. Serrated edge 2. Smooth edge
6. Dressmaker’s Carbon paper/ Tracing paper – a waxed carbon paper that transfers the tracing wheel marking to the fabric.
Other Supplies
1. Pin cushion – used for making needles and pins ready for use. It holds straight pins and needles while working to prevent accidents
2. Hand needle – used in making temporary stitches and button holes. Sizes of 7-10 are for general hand sewing
3. Needle threader – it aids in putting the thread to the needle. It consists of two parts: handle and wire.
4. Thimble – a small hard pitted cup worn for protection on the finger that pushes the needle in sewing.
5. Emery Bags – this is used to sharpen and clean the needles and pins.
6. Pins – it is used to hold pieces of fabric together when sewing or cutting the fabric.
7 Fabric – is the used cloth in making garments. The plain cotton fabrics like catcha or flour sack is appropriate Material for beginners
8 Thread – it is used in assembling or constructing the parts of the garment. Threads vary in sizes.

1. Spool pin –is the thread holder
2. Thread guide - keeps the thread in position
3. Thread take up lever - releases the thread and interlocks with the bobbin thread
4. Presser bar lifter - moves the presser foot
5. Tension -control the looseness and tightness of stitches
6. Needle bar - holds the needle in place
7. Needle clamp - holds and tightens the needle
8. Presser foot - holds The fabric in place while sewing
9. Needle - is a slender tool attached in the needle clamp used for sewing
10. Bobbin winder -controls the bobbin while winding thread
11. Stitch regulator - checks the length of the stitches
12. Balance Wheel - set the mechanism in control
13. Belt - connects the balance wheel to the drive wheel
14. Stop Motion Screw - hinders moving when loosened and starts
Parts of Sewing Machine Under Bed
1. Feed Dog -moves the fabric while sewing
2. Throat Plate -windows of the feed dog and where the bobbin threads comes out
3. Slide Plate - is a movable plate that covers the shuttle and bobbin case
4. Shuttle -holds the bobbin case while sewing
5. Bobbin - a metal spool for winding thread
6. Bobbin Case - holds the bobbin
Lower Parts of Lock Stitch Sewing Machine
1. Band Wheel -leads the balance wheel through the belt connection
2. Band Wheel crank - moves the band wheel
3. Pitman Rod -holds the treadle to band wheel crank
4. Belt Guide - holds the belt to its place
5. Belt Shifter - removes the belt from the wheel
6. Dress Guard -protects the dress from the wheel
7. Treadle - where the feet are stationed to drive the band wheel through the pitman rod
8. Legs - support the cabinet of the machine
9. Cabinet - holds the machine by interlocking screw on the hinges
