Preface

By the Grace of Allah & by the Lutf of His Last Emissary – Imam-e-Zamana
(a.s) – it is gives us a great pleasure to present this IBP RC Handbook to all
teachers. This handbook contains extra points, Quranic verses & traditions
of Ahle Bait (a.s) with regards to the Q & A in the IBP Aqaed syllabus.

We would like to acknowledge & thank all the senior faculties who have
shared their research notes with us. Thanks to them it was very easy to
compile the handbook. Without their selfless and generous contribution,
this humongous task would not have been possible.

The highlight of this Handbook is that all the Quranic verses and traditions
have been referenced and noted. There are around 325 references spread
across six topics. As far as possible, we have tried to provide the original
source of reference. This was one a very challenging task but by the grace of
Imam Zamana (a.s), we have managed to accomplish it. Although efforts
I
M have been made to be as accurate as possible while providing the
A references, yet it is likely that some errors may have crept in. Teachers &
M faculty members are requested to draw our attention to the same.
A
Teachers are advised to use this Handbook while teaching in the class.
T
However, please keep the SSC in mind and explain accordingly. Please cover
all the Q & A in every session as per the SSC.

We thank Allah for helping us in this endeavour and pray to Him to hasten
the reappearance of Imam Mahdi (a.s) and to include us among his (a.s)
sincere servants and helpers. Aameen

Chapter 1 - Introduction
Q1. Has Allah created us in vain, or has He created us with some
purpose?

A1. As we have studied earlier, Allah has not created us in vain. He

has created us with a definite purpose and that is examination
in this world.

“Do people believe that that they have been created in vain and
they shall not return back to us 1

Those who deny Qiyamat are in fact denying the wisdom of

Allah. But they are totally wrong. Because if we look around us,
we find innumerable things and all of them are having some
aim and purpose. However, due to our limited knowledge, we
may be able to identify only a few of them.

E.g.

1. The nail on our fingers serves the purpose of supporting the

finger. When we want to lift anything, it is due to the nail that

1 Surah Momenoon; v 115

IBP-RC-MAAD P A G E |3
no pressure comes on our finger. Also the excess wastage
material of the body comes out through the nail. 2

2. When Imam Sadiq (a.s) was asked, “would it not have been
better if hair would not grow on the bodily parts?” Imam (a.s)
replied, “Know that such parts of body are the places where
excess wetness & toxic materials gather and if it does not come
out manwill fall sick.3

When a part of the human body is not created without

wisdom and purpose, then is it correct to believe that man
himself has been created without any aim?

According to the Quran, the aim of creation is to “Worship

Allah”.4 At the same time, some other verses also mention that
we have been sent in this world for examination.5 However,
both these groups of verses are not in contradicting with each
other. Rather we can say that the aim of creation is to check /
test / examine whether we worshiponly Allah or worship
somebody else. We will not be judged with regards to

qualification / wealth / fame / house / assets / intelligence but
will be judged with regards to Worship and Maarefat.

Q2. Is it possible that Allah examines us in this world, but does not
show man the result of his efforts?

A2. A simple school examination is not conducted without

declaring the results. Then how is it possible that Allah, the
Wise, will do such a thing? Allah has sent us in this world for
examination and one day He will definitely show man the
result of his efforts.

(This question is especially important for debating with the

materialistic & the atheist since they outrightly deny Qiyamat.
The significance of this answer also increases when we see that
our students go to schools where they may come across
students with other beliefs. Also there may be some students
who may migrate to some Western country in the future.
Hence this question is very pertinent)

E.g. Once the parents get their children admitted in some

school then they don’t need to worry about the progress of
their child. Becauseit is an unsaid / unwritten promise from
the side of the school to declare results and promote those
students who have passed. Every school and university is
bound to declare the results of the examination that they

IBP-RC-MAAD P A G E |5
conduct. And based on the results, a student is promoted to the
next level or some degree / certificate is given.

Since Allah has promised - that the good doers will be

rewarded for their good actions & the evil doers will
bepunished of their evil actions 6- hence it is impossible that
Qiyamat will not be there. Because Allah does not retract on
His Promise and Pledge 7

Q3. Which is that day when Allah will show man the result of his
efforts?

A3. Allah will show man the result of his efforts on the Day of
Judgement

People wonder that why reward and punishment is not

instantaneous. The reply to this is that the results are only

declared after the completion of the exam. In our case, reward

and / or punishment can only be given after our “book of

accounts” is closed. Allah has kept the doors of repentance

open for His servants. So if a person commits a sin but sincerely

repents, then he will not get punishment because his ‫ﻧﺎﻣ‬

‫ﻋﺎﻣﺎل‬will be cleared of the sin. Similarly, the reward and

6 Surah Zilzaal, v 7-8 -
7 Surah Aale Imran, v 9, Surah Raad, v 31 - َ ‫إ ِﻧ ﺎﻟﻠ َﻼَ ﻳ ُﺨْﻠِﻔُﺎﻟْﻤ َِﻴﻌﺎد‬

IBP-RC-MAAD P A G E |6
punishment of our action accrues to us even after our death. In

other words, our Baqeyatus-Salehat will also be accounted.

Thus our “books of account” will finally close only on the day

ofQiyamat.

Hence, if you teach your friend to perform wuzu, you will

continue to get the reward of his performing wuzu even if you

die. Similarly, if a boy teaches another friend abusive language

or method of operating TV / DVD / Internet or introduce a

pornographic website, then its punishment will also be written

in the ‫ﻋﺎﻣﺎل‬ ‫ ﻧﺎﻣ‬of the one who introduced the website. Hence
death does not close our “book of deeds”
Also, certain crimes and evils are so extensive in their effects
that they cannot be adequately punished in this world with its
limited time span. Crimes are some time so great that the
punishment inflicted by the society cannot compensate the
crime committed. It is beyond the scope of this world.

E.g. If a person kills 100 people then he can be hanged only

once.

IBP-RC-MAAD P A G E |7
Q4. What would have happened if Allah had not kept the Day of
Judgement for reward and punishment?

A4. If Allah had only kept an examination for man, but had not
made some arrangement for reward and punishment, then no
one would have taken the examination seriously, as they
would not be sure about the reward nor fear the punishment.

Moreover, it is against the justice of Allah, that He does not

reward/punish man for his deeds. Therefore, if one believes
that Allah is Just, then he should also believe in the Day of
Judgement.

Adl is one of the pillars of Islam (along with Tauheed). Since

Allah is Aadil, hence He has kept Qiyamat. It is against the
justice of Allah that He does not reward/punish man for his
deeds. Therefore if one believes that Allah is Just then he
should also believe in the Day of Judgment.

believe and do good? (Do they think) that their lives & death
are equal? Evil it is that they judge. And Allah created the
heavens & earth with truth and that every soul may be
rewarded for what it has earned and they shall not be wronged
8

Conclusion
1. Allah examines every person in this world and will one day
show him the result of his efforts.

2. Allah will show man the result of his efforts on the Day of
Judgement.

3. If Allah had not kept the Day of Judgement for reward and
punishment, man would not have taken the examination of this
world seriously.

Chapter 2 - Maad and Nabuwwat

Q1. Can a school conduct an exam at the end of the year when it
has not sent any teacher to guide the student?

A1. No. If the school wishes to conduct an exam it must first send
a teacher to teach the syllabus to students. If it does not send
a teacher, the students will protest and offer excuses.
Moreover, the purpose of conducting the exam will not be
fulfilled.

Q2. What was the purpose behind sending Prophets (a.s.)?

A2. The Prophets (a.s) were the guides and teachers for the
people.

 Sure Aaraf: 430

And they shall say - ‘All praise is due to Allah who guided us to
this and we would not have found the way had it not been for
Allah’s guidance. Certainly the apostles of our Lord brought the

IBP-RC-MAAD P A G E | 10
truth and it shall be cried out to them that this is the garden of
which you are made heirs for what you did9

Hence Nabi is the one who helps man in this context. Prophets
explain to the people their duties and what they should do to
get the satisfaction of Allah. Anbiya (a.s) guide themasses to
whatever benefits them and protect & warn them from
whatever is harmful to them.

Maad and Nabuwwat are inter-related.

Nabuwwat is essential for the belief of Maad and Maad is

essential to fulfil the promises made by Prophets (a.s)

Since, we have come in this world for examination, it is

essential for us to precisely know what kind of examination we
are supposed to give, what are the expected answers. We
cannot understand these thingsby ourselves. We do not know
what our Creator wants from us; hence He has appointed
prophets (a.s), He has conveyed these points to His prophets
(a.s) and has made them responsible to convey them to us.

We will never be able to give our exams without these

instructions from the prophets (a.s)

9 Surah Araaf, v 43

IBP-RC-MAAD P A G E | 11
Q3. What would have happened if Allah had not sent Prophets
(a.s.) for man’s guidance?

A3. If Allah had not sent Prophets (a.s) for man’s guidance, man
would have had some excuse in Maad. He would have
complained to Allah – If You had sent some warner for our
guidance, we would definitely have followed him and would
not have been disgraced in this manner.

Q4. After the raising of Prophets (a.s) will man have any excuse on
the Day of Judgement?

A4. No. After raising so many Prophets (a.s) for man’s guidance,
Allah will not accept any excuse on the Day of Judgement.

ً ‫ﺣَ ِﻜ‬

We sent apostles as the givers of good news and as warners so

that people should not have a plea against Allah after the
(coming of) apostles; and Allah is mighty wise.10

Allah has closed all doors of excuses (in the hereafter) after
sending the Prophets (a.s)

10 Surah Nisa, v 165

IBP-RC-MAAD P A G E | 12
Ignorance is not bliss with regards to religion. We have been
ordered time and again to gain knowledge etc.

Hence after the sending of Prophets (a.s), Aimmah (a.s),

and the presence of Ulema in our society, and also by
coming to class, we do not have any excuse for leaving
prayers, disobeying parents, using abusive language etc.

Conclusion
1. An examination conducted at the end of the year will be
purposeful only if there was a teacher to guide and teach the
students during the year.

2. Allah sent Prophets (a.s) for man’s guidance so that man would
not have any excuse later on the Day of Judgement.

Chapter 3 – Raising the Dead

Q1. How is it possible for a man to become alive once again after
death?

A1. Anyone who believes that Allah has power over all things will
not doubt such things.

Ayasha narrates that IbneKhalaf came to Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a)

and picked up some rotten &decayed bones. He crushed them
in front of Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a) and asked “O Mohammed!
(Will) these powdered bones be brought to life again?” At this
instance, Allah revealed, revealed

“And he strikes out a likeness for Us and forgets his own

creation? He says, ‘Who will give life to these bones while they
dust??” 11

In this discussion of IbneKhalaf, he is wondering “how is it

possible” for the powdered bones to become a human again. In
other words, he is challenging the power of Allah and just

11 Surah Yasin, v 78

IBP-RC-MAAD P A G E | 14
because humans cannot recreate something once it is
destroyed hence IbneKhalaf felt that even it is impossible for
Allah to do such a thing. But Allah has explicitly mentioned in
the Quran numeroustimes that He is All – Powerful and has
power over all things.

14 Surah Haj, v 6

IBP-RC-MAAD P A G E | 15
Q2. How will He recreate the bones and flesh after they have
turned to dust?

A2. Allah has created the bones and flesh from nothing; then it is
easier for Him to recreate the bones and flesh from dust.

‘Say: He will give life to them Who brought them into existence
at first, and He is knowing of all creation.’15

Q3. Are there any examples of Allah giving life to the dead?

A3. Yes there are several examples in the Quran.

 Allah gave life to Hazrat Ozair (a.s) and his donkey after they
were dead for 100 years.

 Allah gave life to four different kinds of birds after they had
been slaughtered, minced, mixed and divided into four parts
by Hazrat Ibrahim (a.s).

 Many Prophets have given life to the dead by Allah's

permission, then why can't Allah do it?

16 Many ahadith indicate that the man whom Allah has kept dead for 100
years was H. Irmiya. In fact they are more in number and reliable. It is
possible that the hadees that mention the name Ozair may be due to
Taqaiyyah& that they might have spoken in favour of AhleKitab to
guide them to the correct path and that they may not deny this
incident. But majority of the Tafaseer mention the name as Irmiya.

Imam Sadiq (a.s) says: “After the mass massacre of the Bani

by a king called Bakhtun Nasr18. He mounted his donkey and
left the city – carrying with him some figs and juice. On the way
he reached a place where the dead bodies of many people
were scattered. The animals of land, sea & air were devouring
the corpses. H. Irmiya stopped for a while and wondered “How
will Allah enliven these corpses whose limbs have been eaten

was Bakht and her owner’s name was Nasr. Bakhtun Nasr was a fire
worshipper. He had invaded Jerusalem and killed thousands. (Hayatul
Quloob, 1/596 – Eng).
Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a): Indeed, Jibraeel has brought for me book in
which is the news of all the rulers before me. Bakhtun Nasr was a king
who ruled over Jerusalem for 187 years. He killed 70000 Jews. He
destroyed BaitulMuqddas. Many Jews fled the cities and sought refuge
elsewhere. After 74 years had passed of his reign, Allah sent H. Ozair
to this place. …. (Kamaluddin, 1/226)

bestowed His mercy upon the Bani Israel and killed Bakhtun

Nasr. The Bani Israel flourished and spread in the world. It was
after 100 years that Allah brought back H. Irmiya back to life.

The first part of the corpse of H. Irmiya that Allah made alive

was his eyes. The pupil of the eyes moved like the whiteness of

the egg and it could see. Allah sent a revelation and asked H.

Irmiya – “How many days have you been in this place?” ( ‫َﺎل ﻛَ ْﻢ‬

buried together in the same grave. Yet the age of one was 50
years & that of the other was 150 years” Imam (a.s) replied,
“Those two brothers were Ozair & Ezra. They were twins.
When they were 30 years old, Allah caused Ozair to die for 100
years. When He made him alive, he lived with Ezra for another
20 years and thereafter both of them died. Thus the age of
Ozair was 50 years & that of Ezra was 150 years 20

Ibn Kuwaa asked Ameerul Momineen (a.s), “People say that

there was a son who was much older than his father. But my
mind does not accept it”. Imam (a.s) said, “When Ozair went
away from his house, at that time his wife was pregnant. Later
she delivered a son. The age of Ozair when Allah took his soul
was 50 years. Then after a hundred years when he was made
alive, Allah raised him in the same condition in which he was at
the age of 50 years. Thus when returned home, his age was
fifty but his son was much older than him” 21

Then it is narrated from Abu Baseer who narrates from Imam

Sadiq (a.s.) that surely Ibrahim (a.s.) saw a corpse on the banks

of the water and then some of the beasts ate each other and
some others ate those then Ibrahim (a.s.) was amazed then he

and a crow. Then Allah said “Then incline them” i.e. cut them –
then mix their flesh and place portions of it on ten mountains –
Then take their beaks “and called them and they shall come
swiftly to you”. Then Ibrahim (a.s.) did so and he placed
portions of them on ten mountains then he called them and
said, “Respond to me by the permission of Allah” then the flesh
of each one of them came together and their bones except

Conclusion
1. Allah has power over all things and can give life to the dead.

2. He will give life to the decayed bones and flesh, just like He
created them the first time.

3. There are several examples in the Quran of Allah giving life to

both dead men and animals.

Chapter 4- Death and questioning in the grave

Q1. When does man’s journey towards the hereafter start?

A1. Man’s journey towards Maad starts with his death, when the
angel of death (MalakulMaut) captures his soul.

The discussions on Maad consists of 5 stages : (i) Death (ii)

Grave (iii) Barzakh (iv) Resurrection (Qiyamat) (v) Paradise &
Hell

Death – which is the first stage of Maad is nothing but the

“detachment” of the body & the soul.

According to traditions, this “detachment” (i.e death) is easy

for a believer and good doer but it is difficult & painful for an
unbeliever & a sinner.

On the whole the death is a difficult process by itself. Hence a

believer too has to face its difficulties.

IBP-RC-MAAD P A G E | 24
Q2. Who meets the dying person moments before his death?

A2. Every dying person sees Hazrat Ali (a.s). The Shia is happy to
see his Imam (a.s), while others are sad.

According to traditions, a dying person sees, Ameerul

Momineen (a.s); Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a); J. Zahra (s.a) & other
Aimmah (a.s)

AsbaagibnNubata narrates – “Once Haaris Hamdaani came to

meet Ameerul Momineen (a.s) and along with him were a
group of people. I too was present over there. He was stooping
while walking and thumping his staff on the ground as he was
ill. Ameerul Momineen (a.s) came forward to welcome him as
he was dear to him (a.s). He (a.s) asked, ‘How are you Haaris?
……. I give you glad tidings – O Haaris – that you will recognize
me. I swear by the one who split the grain and created life–
both my friends & my enemies will recognize me at different
places. He will recognize me at the time of death, at the seraat
and the “place of distribution”. I said, “And what is the “place
of distribution” my master! Imam (a.s) said “Distribution of fire
– I will distribute it. I will say to it – ‘This is my friend & this is
my enemy”

Q3. What happens to the man after he dies?

A3. After death, the man’s relatives/friends bury him and then he
is left alone without any friend and helper. His only
companions are his actions (good and bad) that he has
performed in this world.

What does this teach us? We must perform action that will be
beneficial to us in the next world.

Bara’ binAzib, one of the companions of Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.)

says,“One day I was in the presence of the Prophet, when we

saw a group of people. The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) asked them

as to why they had gathered? They replied that they had

gathered to dig a grave. As soon as the Prophet heard the

name of the person who was to be buried in the grave, he

25 Amaali Shaikh Tusi, pg. 627

IBP-RC-MAAD P A G E | 26
hurried towards it and sat on one side of the grave. I sat on the

other side facing him so as to get a clear view of what he did. I

saw that the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) started weeping bitterly so

much so that his face became wet. Then he looked at us and

said,

26
“O brothers! Prepare yourselves for this house.”

(In other words, Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a) is exhorting his nation to

perform good actions and be prepared for the grave)

ShaikhBahai says that at times he saw many kings and rulers

who on their deathbed were regretting their sins and wailing
over their lives. ShaikhBahai asked one such person who was
about to die as to what was the reason for such regret. The
dying king replied, “What do you have to say about the person
who is proceeding for a journey without having gathered any
provisions for it, and devoid of a helpful companion. He is
stopped on the way in a horrifying grave, to be produced later
before the Almighty Ruler, without having any goodness in
store.” 27

26 Majmooa’t ul Waraam, vol 2, pg 225

27 Manazelul Aakherah, pg 48 (Eng)

IBP-RC-MAAD P A G E | 27
AllamahQutubuddinRawandi says, that after the death of J.
Maryam (s.a), her son Prophet Isa (a.s.) called her, “O mother!
Please speak to me, and tell me whether you are desirous of
returning back to this world.” J. Maryam (s.a) answered, “Yes, I
desire to return back, so that during the cold winter nights I
could recite namaz, and during the hot summer days I could
fast. O my dear! Verily the way to the hereafter is very
difficult.”28

Q4. What does this teach us?

A4. This teaches us that our wealth, relatives and friends will
remain with us only in this world. In the next world it is only
our actions that will accompany us. Therefore we must
perform actions that will be beneficial to us in the next world.
Also, we must try to perform deeds for which we will be
rewarded even after death.

Q.5. Will man be rewarded or punished for any deed even after his
death?

A.5. Yes, there are some deeds for which we will be rewarded or
punished even after death. These are the deeds the effect of
which is evident after death.

28 Manazelul Aakherah pg 48 (Eng)

IBP-RC-MAAD P A G E | 28
For e.g. if a man starts a madressa, then he will be rewarded for
all the students who study there. This reward will continue till
the madressa is there and students are studying in it regardless
of whether that man is dead or alive. Similarly, if a person
builds a cinema house, then he will be punished for every man
who watches a movie in it, regardless of whether he is dead or
alive.

Concept of Baqiyaatus Saalehaat

Motivate students towards it - to donate money to masjid,
library, teaching, starting an activity in masjid, teaching their
younger brothers to recite namaz, azaan, dua etc.

Discourage the students from doing anything which is

BaqiyaatusSayyeaat – teaching somebody an abusive language,
introducing the method of playing games in computer,
teaching them to use TV etc.

Q6. Will the dead be rewarded for only the deeds that they
themselves had performed during their life time?

A6. No. Even if someone performs a good deed on behalf of the

dead, the reward will reach them (the dead). For instance,
reciting Quran on the grave results in reduction of punishment
of its inhabitant. Likewise, a good child who seeks forgiveness
for his/her dead parents also helps in reducing their

IBP-RC-MAAD P A G E | 29
punishment and raising their status on the Day of Judgement.
That is why we should often remember our dead, pray for
their forgiveness, perform good deeds for them and visit their
graves and recite Surah Fatiha if nothing else.
Haj ShaikhMulla Ali quotes from his father Haj
MirzaKhaleelMalharani who says that: In Tehran there lived a
person named Ali Talib who worked in a hammam (bath-
house). He did not offer Prayers (Namaz) nor fasted (Siyam).
One day he went to a mason and told him to construct a
bathhouse for him, and agreed to offer the payment. The
mason asked him as to where he got such a huge sum, to which
he replied that it was none of his business. The mason did as
ordered, and the bath-house was built which became famous
by his name. MullaKhaleel further says that: Once when I was
in Najaf, I dreamt that Ali Talib was in Wadi-us-Salaam in Najaf.
I was surprised and asked him as to how could a person like
him who did never ever offered prayers nor fasted be in Wadi-
us-Salaam in peace. Ali Talib replied that, “When I died, I was
bound in chains and shackles, and was being taken to be
punished, when I received news that Haj Mulla Mohammad
Kirmanshahi, one of the great Ulema of Tehran, had favoured
me by appointing so and so person to perform the Pilgrimage
(Haj) on my behalf, so and so person do perform my lapsed

IBP-RC-MAAD P A G E | 30
Prayers (Namaz) and Fasts (Siyam), and so and so person to pay
the (Zakat) and atonement of rights (RaddeMazalim) on my
behalf. He left no due pending on me, and thus I was freed of
the punishment. May Allah have mercy on him.”
MullaKhaleelMalharani says: I awoke from my sleep and was
astonished. After some days a group of people came to visit
Najaf from Tehran. I asked them about Ali Talib. They said that
he had died, and Mulla Mohammad Kirmanshahi had
appointed so and so persons to pray, fast, perform Haj, and
give Zakat and RaddeMazalim on his behalf. The names of all
the persons mentioned by them were the same as told to me in
the dream by Ali Talib. This incident is in accordance to the
tradition which says that whatever good-deeds are performed
on behalf of the dead person, benefits him. It is possible that
sometimes a dead person faces troubles and difficulties, but
such good deeds performed by others on his behalf, relieve
him29

Shaikh Saduq relates from Imam Jafar-as-Sadiq (a.s.) who says

that the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) said, “Once Prophet Isa (a.s.)
was passing by a grave which was engulfed in the wrath of
Allah. After one year when he again passed that same grave, he

29 Manazelul Aakherah pg 82 (Eng)

IBP-RC-MAAD P A G E | 31
saw that the punishment had been stopped. He asked Allah the
reason for such a change. Allah revealed to him: O Isa! The
dead man has left behind him a virtuous son, who when he
reached adolescence, rectified the mistakes done by his father.
He helped the orphans and sheltered them. Hence I have
forgiven him because of his son’s good deeds.30

Q7. What happens in the grave?

A7. In the grave, the dead man is made alive once again. He is
questioned by two angels Munkar and Nakeer about his
beliefs and actions in this world. For instance, he is asked
questions like – Who is your Lord? What is your Book? What is
your religion? Who is your Prophet? Who is your Imam? Did
you pray namaz?

Belief in “questioning in the grave” is one of the fundamental

beliefs of Shiaism. It is one of the “zarruriyatdeen”.
AllamaMajlisi (ra) writes in Behaarul Anwaar&HaqqulYaqinthat
it is an established&proven fact- from reliable traditions - that
the questioning & squeezing in the grave is for the physical
body as well as the soul. In the grave one is questioned
regarding one’s beliefs &actions. The questions are put to a
believer as well as an unbeliever. Only infants, the mentally

30 Manazelul Aakherah pg 84 (Eng)

IBP-RC-MAAD P A G E | 32
retarded & people of lesser intellect are exempted from it. One
is also questioned about namaz, fasting, hajj, zakat, khums, and
love of Ahle Bait (a.s) and also about how he spent his entire
life & wealth. In the light of some traditions, our namaz,
fasting, haj etc. will appear in a physical form in our graves.
They will defend & protect a person in questions related to
them. The strongest among them will be physical form of “love
of Ahle Bait (a.s)”.

Q8. What will be the condition of the person who can reply to all
questions but does not know his Imam?

A8. A person who replies to all the questions correctly, but does
not know his Imam, will be like the one who has died without
believing in anything. It is here that man realises the
importance of Holy Prophet’s (s.a.w.a.) tradition

‫ﻣَﺎت ِﻣ ْ َﺘ َﺔ اﻟْﺠَﺎ ِﻠ ِﻴﺔ‬

َ ِ ِ ‫ِﻣَﺎمزَﻣَﺎﻧ‬
َ ‫ﻣَﺎت َوﻟ َْﻢ َْﻌﺮ ِْف ا‬
َ ‫ﻣَﻦ‬ْ

‘One who dies without recognising the Imam of his time has
died the death of ignorance.’

When Imam Reza (a.s) was informed about the news of Ali bin
Abu Hamza’s death, he (a.s) said, “He was asked about the
Imam after my father Musa (a.s) to which he answered, ‘I do
not know of any imam after him (a.s). When he said that, he

IBP-RC-MAAD P A G E | 33
was whipped due to which the whole grave caught fire. 31

Q9. Who will give the correct reply to all these questions?

A9. Only the true Shia IsnaAshari will be able to give the correct
reply to all these questions, but of course, only with the help
of Hazrat Ali (a.s.).

Q10. What will happen to the man after the questioning in the
grave?

A10. After the questioning, man will be rewarded or punished

depending upon his answers. Since only the Shia will answer
the questions correctly he will be rewarded and others will be
punished. A window from Paradise will open in the Shia’s
grave, while a window from Hell will open in the graves of
others.

Conclusion
1. Man’s journey towards Maad begins with his death.
2. Every dying man sees Hazrat Ali (a.s.).
3. Man’s relative or friends will leave him in the grave and only his
actions will accompany him inside the grave.
4. Man will be questioned about his deeds in the grave and he will
be punished and rewarded based on his answers.

Chapter 5 - Barzakh
Q1. What happens to man after his death and before Maad?

A1. Man spends the period between his death and Maad in a
world called as Barzakh. Every man whether he is buried or
burnt has to remain in Barzakh until Maad.

32

Imam Sadiq (a.s) recited the above ayat & said: Barzakh is the
grave. And it is reward and punishment between the world and
the hereafter33

Q2. What has Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s) said about Barzakh?

A2. Imam JafarSadiq (a.s) has warned his Shias about Barzakh –
‘By Allah! I don’t fear anything for you except Barzakh.’

Q3. What does this tradition teach us?

32 Surah Momenoon, v 100

33 Behaar, vol 6, pg 218

IBP-RC-MAAD P A G E | 35
A3. This tradition teaches us that our beliefs (Usool-e-Deen) have
to be correct, as they will be tested in the Barzakh. The Imams
(a.s) will not help their Shias if their beliefs are wrong.

Q4. How can we make sure that our beliefs are correct?

A4. We should take our beliefs only from Quran and the traditions
of the Ahle Bait (a.s.).

Conclusion
1. Every man - whether he is buried or burnt - has to remain in
Barzakh until Maad.

2. Imam JafarSadiq (a.s) has warned the Shias to maintain correct

beliefs, which will be tested in Barzakh.

Chapter 6 - Stages of Maad

Q1. What will happen after Barzakh?

A1. When Maad draws near, Barzakh will end and man will be
raised from his grave.

Q2. Will man see Allah in Maad?

A2. No.As we have learnt in Tauheed, we can never see Allah in

this world or in the hereafter. Allah says in Surah Anaam (6),
verse 103:

َ‫ﻻ َﺗ ُﺪْ ر ُِﻛ اْﻻ َ َْﺼﺎرُ وَ َُﻮﻳ ُﺪْ رِكُ اْﻻ َ َْﺼﺎر‬

‘Vision comprehends Him not, while He comprehends all

vision.’

Sunni believe in seeing Allah, & also they believe that Allah is
having some location and some physical body. It is found in all
Sihah-e-Sitta that the believers – on the Day of Judgment - shall
be looking at Allah just as the people observe the moon on the
full moon night. .

We,shias oppose the Sunni view point. According to the shias –

IBP-RC-MAAD P A G E | 37
in the light of Quranic verses 34 – Allah can never be seen -
neither in this world nor in the hereafter.

Accounting of deeds
(‫)ﺣﺴﺎب‬

Q3. What will happen to man after being raised?

A3. All men will be assembled by Allah, Who will then question
them about their deeds in this world. Man will be questioned
about each and every deed, good or bad, big or small. This is
what the Holy Quran declares:

‫َﺎل ذَرة ٍ َ ا ﻳ َﺮ َ ُه‬

Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a) says that: O Abu Zar! Account your own
self before your account is taken. Because (accounting today)
is easier than your accounting tomorrow (Qiyamat). Weigh
your deeds before they are weighed (in Qiyamat.)36

ShaikhShaheed Ahmed bin AbulHawaree says, “I desired to see

my teacher in my dream. His name was Abu Salman Durrani;
He was a virtuous person who had passed away in Damascus in
235 AH. After a year I saw him in my dream & asked him: Dear
teacher! How were you treated after death?” Abu Salman
replied, “O Ahmed! One day while coming from Babe Sageer, I
saw a camel laden with hay. I casually removed a straw from
it.Now I do not remember whether I put it in my mouth or
threw it away without chewing it. One year has passed & I am
still being accounted for it.37

Shaikh Saduq (a.r) relates from Imam Baqir(a.s) that on the day
of Qiyamat,no one man will be able to move an inch till he has
answered 4 things

 The way how he spent his life

36 Amali Shaikh Tusi pg 525

IBP-RC-MAAD P A G E | 39
 How did he passed his youth

 How he earned his wealth & how he spent it

 About his love of Ahle Bait (a.s).38

Q4. Will we get any assistance from our friends, relatives, etc. in
answering the questions?

A4. No, in the hereafter, man will get no help from any source.
The Holy Quran says

mother, his father, his spouse and his son. Each one of them
shall on that day have an affair which will occupy him.’39

Q5. Who will give witness against man regarding his actions?

A5. When man will deny his actions, Allah will command his limbs,
tongue, eyes, ears, etc. to give witness against him.

38 Behaar vol 7, pg. 259

39Surah Abasa,v 34-37

The limbs, tongues, eyes and ears will give witness. Allah hides
our sins today and we also manage to hide them from our
parents and friends but the same are not hidden from Allah.
Infact, Allah has kept a witness for each of those sins in our
body itself.

Q6. What are the other stages in the hereafter?

hereafter.

Q7. What is Seraat?

IBP-RC-MAAD P A G E | 41
A7. Seraat is a bridge passing over Jahannam and leads to
Paradise. It is thinner than hair and sharper than the sword.
Those who slip from the Seraat will fall in Jahannam. Every
man has to pass over the Seraat.

Q8. Who will be able to cross the Seraat?

A8. According to the Holy Prophet’s (s.a.w.a), ‘Love of Hazrat Ali

(a.s) will be the permit to cross the Seraat’. So only Shias of
Hazrat Ali (a.s) will cross the Seraat

 Seraat is bridge over Jahannam

 Imam Sadiq(a.s) says : It is thinner then hair & sharper than

sword41

 Even though Seraat is very thin & sharp, yet a believer (who
believes in Ahle Bait (a.s)) will pass over it.

 It will be difficult for those who (i) did not perform wajibat, (ii)
did not fulfil “the rights of the people’42

 It is narrated from Imam Sadiq (a.s) concerning the saying of

Allah the Majestic: Surely your Lord is watching! (Surah Fajr 89:
14) – He (a.s) said, it will not be permitted for a person who has

committed injustice to cross the bridge over the Seraat43

 Allamah Bahauddin Sayyed Ali bin Abdul Karim Neeli Najafi

(whatever praise is showered upon him is less. He who was the
student of Shaikh Shaheed), in his book ‘Anwaarul Maziyyah’
(written in praise of Imam Ali) narrates an incident from his
father who says that: In Neela (a village in Abaee) there lived a
person who was the superintendent of the mosque. One day
he did not come out of his house. When people called him he
excused himself. People inquired about it and they found out
that his entire body was charred except his thighs, and he was
groaning with pain and sorrow. When people asked him how
he burnt himself he replied that, “I dreamt that Qiyamat had
dawned, and people are in anguish because majority of them
were been thrown into hell, while a small minority was going
towards Paradise. I was among those who were going towards
Paradise. Suddenly I reached a large and lengthy bridge which
was referred to as ‘Pool-e-siraat’. I started walking on it, and as
much as I walked, itsbreadth became narrow and its length
increased until I reached a place where it turned sharper than a
sword. Beneath was a large valley full of black and roaring fire
whose flames were spurting out like large

43 Kafi, vol 4, pg 24

mountainpeaks. Some people walked away easily while some
slipped and fell down. And I was so much scared that I had no
other wish except to cross the bridge rapidly. Suddenly I
reached that place where I could no longer control myself and I
fell head-long into the pit of the blazing fire. Its pit had no end
and the fire pulled me down. I could not even scream and my
mind went blank, and I reached down equal to the distance of
seventy years. Suddenly I was inspired and I called out

“O Ali ibn Abi Talib! O Ameerul Momeneen! Help me my

master.”

At that moment I saw a person standing on the edge of the

valley. I recognised him to be none other than my master, Ali
(a.s.). I called out to him and he commanded me to extend
my hand. I did so and he pulled me out of the blazing fire.
Then he (a.s) started extinguishing the fire from my thighs
with his blessed hands. I suddenly woke up from my dream
and found that my whole body was burnt, except my thighs
where my master had laid his hands.” This person treated his
wounds for three months and was cured. Now whenever I
relate this incident to anyone, he develops fever (due to

IBP-RC-MAAD P A G E | 44
fear), while only some remain unaffected.44

 When J. Salman Farsi was appointed as the governor of

Madayan, he travelled to the city on his donkey – carrying his
appointment letter. The people too were aware that a new
governor is going to arrive in the city. They were waiting for
many days at the city gates to welcome the new governor (J.
Salman). But there was a delay in his arrival. Finally they lost
hope and were about to return back home, when they saw
someone arriving towards the city on his donkey. When the
person reached the city he did “Salam” to them. They replied
and then asked him “Did you see the governor of Madayan on
the way?” J. Salman asked them “What is his name?” They said,
“His name is Salman Farsi & he is the companion of Holy
Prophet (s.a.w.a).” J. Salman replied, “I don’t know the
“Governor” but yes, I’m Salman Farsi.” Everyone alighted from
their horses and offered them to J. Salman Farsi as a mark of
respect. But J. Salman Farsi said, “My donkey is better for me”
The people took J Salman to the official residence of the
governor. However J. Salman Farsi said, “Neither am I an Emir
nor a ruler. I will not stay in this (opulent) palace.”

J Salman Farsi took a shop on rent and made it his office. From

44 Manazelul Akherah, pg 238 (Arabic)

there he used to execute his duties of governorship and issue
religious edicts and judgements. His personal possessions of
his days of governorship were – an animal skin, a pitcher
(lota) and a staff.

Once – due to heavy rains – there were floods in the city.

Everyone was busy trying to save their belongings and
shifting them to a safe place. They had to face a lot of
difficulty in this regard. But J. Salman picked up his animal
skin and put it on his shoulder, took the pitcher in one hand
and the staff in the other and started moving towards safety.
On the way when he saw the people struggling to save their
belongings, he said, “Live in the world in a way that you don’t
have to worry about anything. And remember, that only the
one who is light (in terms of his worldly belongings and
45
attachments) will be able to cross the Seraat easily.

IBP-RC-MAAD P A G E | 46
A9. Kausar is a pond (Hauz) of milk. One who drinks from it will
never experience thirst again.

Q10. Who shall be able to drink from the pond of Kausar?

A10. Only the Shias of Hazrat Ali (a.s) will be able to drink from
Kausar. Imam (a.s) will himself offer them a cup from the
pond. Others will also rush towards the pond because of the
intense thirst on the Day of Judgement, but the angels will
drag them back.

The pond of Kausar is equal to the distance between Aylah(a

Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) told Imam Ali (a.s): “The Spring of

Kausar flows from beneath the high heavens. Its water is
whiter than milk, sweeter than honey, and softer than ghee. Its
pebbles are of topaz (Zabrojad), rubies (Yaqoot) and corals
(Marjan). Its grass is of saffron (Za’faran), and its mud is of
musk (Mushke Azfar)………Then the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.)
placed his hand on the side of Imam Ali (a.s.) and said,“O Ali!
This stream is not for me alone. Rather it is for me and you and
those who love you” 51

Paradise
Q11. What is Jannat?

A11. Jannat means a Garden. It will be the final abode of the

believers and will be a reward for their good deeds and
correct beliefs in this world. It will have all the bounties.

Q12. Will all the believers enjoy the same position in Jannat?

A12. No, there are several levels in Jannat. Believers will be at

different levels depending on their actions in this world.

The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) said, “O Ali! Your Shia will be seated
on illuminated pulpits in Paradise. Their faces will be glowing

like a full moon, and they will reside in our neighbourhood.”52

In Paradise life will be eternal & ever lasting. This in itself will
be a blessing. In Paradise believers will be seated on thrones
facing each other like brothers.

Hell
Q13. What is Jahannam?

A13. Jahannam is the Fire that Allah has promised to those who
disbelieve. It is a punishment for those who did sins and had
wrong beliefs in this world. The people in Jahannam will burn
in the Fire and if they die they will be created once again, but
they will not get any relief.

Q14. What does Imam Sajjad (a.s) say about the Fire of Jahannam?

52 Dua Nudbah

IBP-RC-MAAD P A G E | 49
A14. In a dua in Sahifa-e-Kamila, Imam Sajjad (a.s) describes the
Fire: ‘The Fire decays the bones and lets the people drink
boiling water. The boiling water tears apart the intestines and
hearts of the people and roots out their marrow. The Fire does
not spare anyone, and has no mercy on the one who seeks
sympathy from it. In it are fearful scorpions and serpents.’ In
fact this is the warning of the Quran.

‘…be on your guard against the Fire of which men and stones
are the fuel; it is prepared for the disbelievers.’53

Q15. Does Jahannam have levels?

A15. Like Jannat, even Jahannam has several levels and the
disbelievers will be at a particular level based on the evil that
they had committed in this world. The more the sins, the
lower (painful) will be the level.

A tradition has been narrated from Imam JafarSadiq (a.s.) that

the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) said,

“On the night of my ascension (Meraj) when I reached the first

heaven, I saw all the Angels rejoicing, but one of them was
quite different from the others. His face was fearful and
showed signs of anger. He saluted me but unlike others did not

53 Surah Baqarah, v 24

IBP-RC-MAAD P A G E | 50
smile at me. I asked Jibraeel as to “Who is he?” Jibraeel replied,
“Verily you should fear him, for we all fear him. This angel is
the keeper of hell. From the day Allah appointed him as the
keeper of hell his anger and wrath increases for Allah’s
enemies. And when Allah shall order him to take revenge upon
His enemies, he shall do so with harshness and severity. If he
had ever met anyone joyously, he would also have smiled at
you.” I saluted that angel and he answered me and gave me
good news of Paradise. Then I told Jibraeel, “O Jibraeel! Tell
him to let me have a glimpse of hell.” Jibraeel requested him
and he lifted the veil off and opened one of the doors of hell.
Suddenly flames of fire erupted from it which reached the sky
and covered it entirely, and started roaring and raging and
creating terror. I told Jibraeel to request him to put back the
veil. The keeper of hell ordered the flames which had reached
the sky to go down.”54

According to trustworthy authorities, Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s)

says, that in hell there is a well in which some of the people will
be imprisoned. This place is for the arrogant and proud people,
the stubborn evildoers. It will also be reserved for the enemies
of Ahle Bait (a.s). The least punishment here is that the person

54 Tafsir-e-Qummi, vol 2 pg 3

IBP-RC-MAAD P A G E | 51
(having the least punishment) will be floating in the sea of fire,
his shoes will be of fire and strings of the shoes will also be
made of fire. And because of intense heat his brain will be
boiling inside his skull. He will think that his punishment is
quite severe, but in fact his punishment will be the least when
compared to the others.55

Chapter 7 - The position of Ahle Bait (a.s) in Maad

Q1. Who will enjoy the highest authority in Maad?

A1. Allah, the Almighty will enjoy the highest position in Maad.

‫ﻣَﺎﻟ ِِﻚ ﻳ َْﻮم ِاﻟﺪ ِﻳﻦ‬

‘Master of the Day of Judgement’56

Q2. Who will Allah grant the highest position among His creatures
in Maad?

A2. Allah will grant the highest position to the Ahle Bait (a.s.). In
Maad no one will enjoy a position higher than the Ahle Bait
(a.s.). Allah will show the people their importance and
greatness in Maad.

In Tafseer of Furat bin Ibrahim Kufi, Imam Sadiq(a.s) quotes

from Holy Prophet (saw) that he said: As Allah has promised
me, He will surely fulfil it “

56 Surah Fateha, v 3

IBP-RC-MAAD P A G E | 53
“May He (your lord) raise you to a position of great glory.”57

He will gather all the people on the day of Qiyamat& will erect a
pulpit for me. It will be having 1000 steps & each step will be of
topaz (Zabrojad), emerald (Zammurud), rubies (Yaqoot) & gold.
I will mount on it & sit on the highest step.At that moment
Jibrael will bring standard of praise (LiwaulHamd) & handling it
over to will say. O Mohammed (saw) verily this is the praise
worthy position (MaqameMahmood) about which Allah had
promised you then I will tell Ali (a.s) to mount the pulpit. He
shall do so and sit one step below me. Then I will hand over the
standard to him.

Then the gatekeeper of paradise (Rizwan) will bring the key of

paradise & hand them over to me. Likewise keeper of hell will
also come & handover the key of hell to me, then I in turn will
give to keys to Ali (a.s) –

IBP-RC-MAAD P A G E | 54
Q3. What will be Hazrat Ali’s (a.s) position in Maad?

A3. Hazrat Ali (a.s) will enjoy a very high position in Maad. He will

be ِ‫اﻟْﺠَﻨﺔ َو اﻟﻨَﺎر‬ ُ‫َﻗﺴِﻴْﻢ‬ – the distributor of Heaven and the Fire. On

that day the Fire will be most obedient to Hazrat Ali (a.s.).

It is related in ‘Khesal’ of Shaikh Saduq that the Commander of

the Faithful, Ali (a.s) said, “I along with my Progeny (Ahle bait)
will be standing beside the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) near the
spring of Kausar. Whoever wishes to meet us should strive to
emulate our actions and words. For every house has some
generous and noble people. Intercession (Shafaat) is surely
there for our friends. Hence strive to meet us there. We shall
drive away our enemies from there (Hauz) and give our friends
to drink from it. And whoever drinks a sip from that blessed
water will never become thirsty.”59

Q4. Who will intercede and who will get intercession in Maad?

A4. The Ahle Bait (a.s) will intercede and only their Shias will get
intercession.

Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) said: On the day of Qiyamat I will surely

intercede for 4 types of people

59 Khesal-e-Saduq, vol 2, pg 624

IBP-RC-MAAD P A G E | 55
a. Those who respect & honour of my Ahle Bait (a.s)

b. Those who fulfil desire of my Ahle Bait (a.s)

c. Those who work for their cause

d. Those who love them from their hearts as well as by tongue60

Q5. If Ahle Bait (a.s) will intercede for us, then why should we do
good deeds in this world?

A5. It is true that the Ahle Bait (a.s) will intercede for the Shias,
but there are several conditions for this intercession. For e.g.
Imam Sadiq (a.s) says, ‘Our Shafaat will not reach those who
take their namaz lightly.' These conditions must be fulfilled if
we desire Shafaat.

Conclusion
1. Allah will have the highest authority in Maad.

2. Among His creatures, Allah will grant the highest authority to

the Ahle Bait (a.s.).

3. Hazrat Ali (a.s) will enjoy a very high position and will be the
distributor of the Heaven and the Fire.

4. The Ahle Bait (a.s) will do shafaat for us, but this Shafaat has
some conditions, which mustbe fulfilled.

Chapter 8 - Lessons from Maad

Q1. What are the lessons we learn from Maad?

A1. If we believe in Maad truly and correctly it can change our life.

Q2. How can the belief in Maad change our lives?

A2. One who believes that he will be questioned one day by Allah
for each and every action, will be very cautious in this world
and will avoid doing actions for which he may have to regret
in Maad. He will try to adopt the best morals and will be
careful in performing religious actions like namaz, fasting, etc.
Similarly, if he knows that he will be questioned about his
belief in Tauheed, Imamat, etc., he will be careful about his
beliefs and will rectify them if they are incorrect.

In the grave, the person will be questioned about his beliefs.

Thus the one who is well acquainted with the Usool-e-deen
(Tauheed, Adletc) in his life time then with it will be able to
answer without trouble and if he does so, his grave will be
broadened till where his sight reaches andtheperiod of barzakh
will pass easily. If he cannot answer and is non-believer or
hypocrite, then his grave will be filled with fire.

IBP-RC-MAAD P A G E | 57
Imam Sadiq (a.s): If you wish that He causes you to die on your
good actions until your soul is captured and you are on the best
of action, then honour Allah for His right that you do not waste
His bounties through His disobedience and that you do not take
undue advantage of His Forbearance upon you and honour
everyone that you find mentioning us or claims to possess our
love. Then it is not upon you to declare him a truthful person or
a liar. For you is your intention & for him is his lie61

Q3. Will a man do bad actions if he believes in Maad?

A3. One who believes in Maad will try to control his sins because
he knows that one day he will have to account for every action
and will be rewarded/punishedaccordingly.

We must always remember Hazrat Ali’s (a.s) words in Dua-e-

Kumayl: ‘O Allah! I cannot bear the difficulties of this world
which are little and temporary, then how can I stand the
difficulties of akherat which are most painful and permanent.’

One will be questioned about namaz, roza, hajj, zakat, khums,

and love of Ahle Bait and also about how he spent his entire
life & wealth. In all our prayers we should ask Allah to forgive
our sins &protect us from the fire of hell. We can ask the
students to memorise this dua and pray in their Qunoot

If we believe in Maad - truly & correctly - it can change our

lives. The Holy Quran says

“Nay! If you would have known with certainity, you would have
surely seen hell” 63

Thus the one, who has a firm belief in Maad, will most certainly
shiver and shudder if he thinks of the consequences of his sins.
And will certainly keep away from them

For example, the Holy Quran says that those who eat haram
food are actually filling their stomach with fire. So if a person
has certainity (yaqeen) then he will definitely avoid haram food

Q4. What was Hazrat Ali’s (a.s) will (wasiyyat) to Imam Hasan
(a.s.)?

A4. Hazrat Ali (a.s) says in his wasiyyat: ‘O my son, remember that
you have been created for the hereafter, which will always
remain, and not for this world which shall be destroyed.’

This shows that the purpose of our creation is the hereafter

and not this world. Then we must act to ensure that our
hereafter is safe and secure, even if we have to undergo some
difficulty in this world.

Conclusion
1. One who believes in Maad sincerely will perform good actions
and keep away from bad actions.

2. The difficulties of this world are easy and brief as compared to

the difficulties of the hereafter, which are very painful and
eternal.

3. We have been created for the hereafter and not for this world.
