Dom Retest 2 QP Asection PDF

1. The document is a test paper for the subject Dynamics of Machines from K. Ramakrishnan College of Technology. 2. It contains two parts - Part A with 10 multiple choice questions mapping to the course outcomes and Part B containing 4 numerical problems to test applying concepts of balancing of reciprocating and rotating masses. 3. The questions assess students' ability to calculate balancing masses and their locations as well as other concepts related to dynamics of machines as per the mapped course outcomes.

(Answer for any THREE questions)

11 A shaft carries four rotating masses A, B, C and D in this order along its axis. (10) CO2/
The mass of B, C and D are 30 kg, 50 kg and 40 kg respectively. The planes K3
containing B and C are 30 cm apart. The angular spacing of the planes
containing C and D are 90° and 210° respectively relative to B measured in
the same sense. If the shaft and masses are to be in complete dynamic balance,
calculate (i) the mass and the angular position of mass A; and (ii) the position
of planes A and D. if radius of masses ABCD as 180mm,240mm,120mm
and 150mm.
12. A rotating shaft carries four unbalanced masses A,B,C and D as shown below: (10) CO2/
K3
A B C D
mass (kg) 18 14 16 12
Radius (mm) 50 60 70 80
The masses B , C, and D revolve in the planes 80 mm, 160 mm and 280 mm
respectively from the plane of mass A and are angularly located at 60 0 ,
1350and 2700 respectively measured clockwise from the masses A located at
the end of the shaft. The shaft is dynamically balanced by two masses which
are located at 50 mm radii and revolving in planes midway between those
masses A and B and masses C and D respectively. Calculate the magnitude
and position of balancing masses.

13. A two cylinder uncoupled locomotive has inside cylinders 0.6 m apart .the (10) CO2/
radius of each crank is 300 mm and are at right angles. the revolving mass per K3
cylinder is 250 kg .and reciprocating mass per cylinder is 300 kg. the whole of
rotating and two –third of the reciprocating masses are to be balanced and the
balanced masses are to be placed ,in the planes of rotation of the driving wheels
a radius of 0.8m .the driving wheels are m in diameter and 1.5 m apart .if the
speed of the engine is 80m/hr, determine 1.hammer blow.2.maximum variation
in tractive force.3.maximum swaying couple.

14. The three cranks of a three cylinder locomotive are all on the same axle and are (10) CO2/
set at 120°. The pitch of the cylinders is 1 metre and the stroke of each piston
K3
is 0.6 m. The reciprocating masses are 300 kg for inside cylinder and 260 kg
for each outside cylinder and the planes of rotation of the balance masses are
0.8 m from the inside crank. If 40% of the reciprocating parts are to be balanced,
find :1. the magnitude and the position of the balancing masses required at a
radius of 0.6 m ;and 2. the hammer blow per wheel when the axle makes 6 r.p.s.
