Workshop : Creation of a template

carcass

Missler Software 1
TopSolid’Wood 2007

The template
During the creation of a new document, TopSolid’Wood proposes a list of the standard
template files available. These template files are visible under the heading ***STANDARD
TEMPLATES***. These predefined models are called « Template ».

Each user can create a personal clean Template.

The purpose of this template is to predefine the desired settings for a project at its outset,
allowing you to save time when creating other similar projects.

A template can :
- Define the principal parameters used in the creation of the project,
- Integrate the construction of a standard carcass model,
- Be predefined for the creation of standard profiled components, etc.

A personal Template file should be saved in the following folder; Missler\Config\Template.

These template files will then be available when creating a new document under the
heading; ***USER MODELS***.

During the use of a Template file, the software copies the adjustments made in the template
to create a new document.

All the files generated starting from a template are totally independent from each other.
A modification made to a template file will not be carried out on any projects previously
created using this template.

The modifications will be present during the creation of a new document using that
template.

2 Missler Software
TopSolid’Wood 2007

Configuring the Auto-save options

The purpose of this function is to automatically save the files in a folder defined by the
user, when the user forgets to save their file.
The frequency at which the files are saved can also be defined by the user.
These adjustments are defined in Tools/Options/Document.

1. Check the box « Auto-saving files ».

2. Define « How many minutes before saving », i.e. 30 min.
3. Select the folder to save the files in. For that, click on Browse, then create a
folder named Auto-save in your Projects folder.
4. Select OK, to save the adjustments and to close the Application configuration
dialogue window.

Create the furniture geometry

Choose Without Template in the proposed list of template models.

2 Create the parameters

Parameter, Create
To create a parameter, the following information should be defined :
- the unit,
- the value of the parameter,
- the parameter name and designation.

After defining this information, click on the document to position the parameter text. This
places text on the screen, which contains the name and value of the parameter.
All the parameters created in a document are stored in a list available in the menu;
Parameter\Edit list.

Create the following parameters :

- length : L=900
- height : h=600
- depth : p=450
- thickness : ep=19

3 Create a rectangular contour

Wood, Slot
Create the slot on the panel which comprises the lower part of the box, by selecting :
- the reference face (top face of the panel)
- the trajectory of the tool (back edge)

Tool trajectory
Reference face

The arrow represents the direction of any offset from

the tool trajectory. This obviously must always point
towards the inside of the part.

Select Drills and then the simple mill.

Define the machining values of the slot by creating a new parameter for each of them.

To do this, create the new parameters in the slot dialogue window by typing the following in
the fields :

« Name of the parameter = value », example : dr = 10mm

- Gap distance : dr=10 mm

- Slot width : lr=6 mm
- Slot depth : pr

Select OK.

Now use the option COPY OPERATION to create the same slot on the top panel.

This option links the two operations, which means there is no need to define the machining
values of the operation again.

22 Slot
Wood, Slot
Create a slot on the left panel of the box by selecting :
- the reference face (interior face of the panel)
- the trajectory of the tool (back edge)

Use the options STARTING CONDITION and END

Assembly
To install the hardware necessary for the completion of the project, use the pins, lens, eccentrics,
and screw assembly functions available in TopSolid’Wood.
These functions allow us to define, through an interactive dialogue, the positioning and
distribution of assembly hardware on a specified distance. Once the information is defined, the
software automatically creates the machining processes linked to the assembly components
used.
The positioning setup of the assembly hardware, is done by defining the following information :

1. The support face for the hardware : this is the face in contact with the part to be
assembled (Hatched zone). To aid the selection process, there is an active filter
which makes it possible to select only faces which are in contact.

Support face

2. Select the start face or edge.

3. Define the positioning of the hardware on the thickness of the part. Click on
CENTRED AUTOMATICALLY to ensure it is centred on the thickness of the part. If it
is not to be centred, manually select the face or edge to define its position.
4. Select the terminate face or edge.

1. Support face 2. Start face 3. Centred automatically 4. Terminate face

According to the hardware used, there may be other elements to define in order to allow the
positioning of the component :
- Example : During the use of the Eccentric function, the software will prompt you to
select the face to be drilled for the eccentric components case.

Missler Software 9
TopSolid’Wood 2007

The distribution characteristics can be defined manually or automatically, using distribution

models predefined by the user. These predefined distribution models are created by going to the
Topsolid’Wood configuration menu. To find this go to Tools\ Options\ Topwood Configuration.

Examples :

If no predefined propagation is If a predefined propagation is selected, all the

selected, the user must define the configuration fields appear greyed-out as this
distribution manually. information has already been defined.
The distribution is calculated automatically

To have a predefined propagation available in the list, it is imperative that the predefined
propagation model is created before the use of the assembly functions.

Configuration of propagation models

It is possible to create or destroy propagation models in the Top’Wood configuration menu using
the buttons Add propagation and Delete propagation.
The creation of a propagation model involves entering the following information:

- Upper and lower limits.

- Type
- Step
- d0 and d1
- Number of elements
- Optimise and minimise options (d0, d1)

Except the limits, all information present in the configuration window (the dotted line zone shown
below) corresponds to the fields in the Distribution definition dialogue window that appears when
using the Eccentric, Pin, Screw and Lens assembly functions.

- Define the order the edges appear in the bill of material,
- Generate a personal codification to easily identify the edge and its
characteristics,
- Configure the length, over-dimensions and the necessary machining for the
positioning of each edge.

It is possible to define a codification associated to :

- The edge type and the thickness,
- The material and the coating,
- The height of the edge.

The height of the edge has to be calculated when it’s created as it’s linked to the part’s
height. In order to integrate this value into the codification, it’s necessary to use this
syntax:

Separation bar

[h|01mm]

Number of decimals and units

Every panel model is saved as a .top file under the name of the created panel. All the files
are stored in the Template directory under Missler\Config or Group, depending on the
configuration used (USER or GROUP).

A saved panel model doesn’t retain any information about the panel entity (i.e. designation,
material etc.) it only retains information defined in the panel function (i.e. the number of
edges, the type of edges, laminate or not etc.).

Define a key point

Before “defining” the characteristics of the part, open a new document and then insert the
part just created by using; “Assembly, Include standard”.
When you create an assembly, TopSolid’Wood proposes two modes of positioning:
- by CONSTRAINT,
- or by KEY POINT.

The first solution consists of manually defining the different connections (MATE,
ALIGNMENT, ORIENTATION …) which will define the positioning of the assembled part.
This method is often used in the creation of furniture or for creating constraint systems
with joints.
Depending on the complexity of the part’s geometry, or the geometry of the part that it will
be assembled to, the assembly by constraint can be tedious.
However, this method remains essential for the creation of a constraints system.

The assembly by key point makes it possible to define, on the model of the part, an origin
coordinate system that will be used to define the orientation and the positioning of the part
when it is inserted into an assembly.
The working principle is simple; the software aligns the axes of the origin coordinate
system created on the model of the part, onto the axes of the destination coordinate
system

Examples:
Y+ Axis Axe Y+

X+ Axis Axe X+

Orientation of the key point Orientation of the destination coordinate system Result

Axe Y+
Axe Y+

Axe X+ Axe X+

Orientation of the key point Orientation of the destination coordinate system Result

Axe Y+ Axe Y+

Axe X+ Axe X+

Orientation of the key point Orientation of the destination coordinate system Result

It’s possible to create several key points.

By default, the first key point created is proposed to anchor the part.

28 Missler Software
TopSolid’Wood 2007

When inserting a component, if there is no key point defined, the part appears in dynamic
mode. So if you click on the screen, the point that is used to place the component
corresponds to the centre of mass of the part.

Click inside the document to physically insert the component into the project, and use the
positioning constraints to position it correctly.
On the other hand, if a key point is defined in the component, it is enough to simply click
on the coordinate system or face which the part will be positioned on.

Define the processes of a component

A process is an operation, defined in the model of the component, which can be used again
when the component is inserted in an assembly. The principle for a local operation type
process is to carry out an operation on a martyr block, in order to then define the process
as a tool. The advantage of this method is the ability to recover the properties of the
operation when exporting towards a CFAO machining module.

15 Create a panel entity

Wood, Panel

The purpose of the panel function is to, simplify the application of the edge and laminate
functions, while defining the variables needed for their application. Thus, it is possible to
work on the design of a part in a FINISHED or ROUGH mode, and also to define the
covering of joints between edges and laminates.
The result of this function is to generate a complete panel entity, considered as a whole
part, but comprising of several elements (base, edges and laminates).

A panel is set up in 5 steps:

1. Choose the design options (FINISHED or ROUGH mode, covering of joints

between edges and laminates …),
2. Select the reference face,
3. Define the part (Information assigned to the base part include; a designation, a
material, a coating …),
4. Define the information for the edge banding wizard,
5. Define the panel entity (Information assigned to the panel entity include; a
designation, a reference …).

Create a parametric expression with conditions

It is possible to create parameters which change according to various conditions. Thus the
value of a parameter can vary, according to the value of a second parameter.

In this exercise, the positioning of the bowl handle component varies depending on the
version of the door (right or left).

The creation of a parameter with conditions is done by using the following syntax :

p1 = when ( dg==1 , L-50mm , 50 mm )

Name of the Parameter to consider

Value when the condition
condition parameter
is not met

Condition Value when the condition

is met

The parameter p1 corresponds to the positioning of the handle on the door.

The parameter dg corresponds to the version of the door (0 for the left, 1 for the right),

The expression above works in the following way :

- When dg is equal to 1, then the value of p1 is L-50mm.

- When dg is different from 1, then the value of p1 is 50mm.

Multi-Drilling

The principle of the Multi-drilling function is to carry out the propagation of a drilling operation
along one or two directions. The function proposes various modes of distribution specific to
TopSolid’Wood (Step, Step centred, Distance) while managing the number of operations in an
associative way using the parameters of the function (distance between centres, optimised
number of elements…).

Also, it is possible to define drilling patterns.

Define an articulation configuration

An articulation configuration makes it possible to define the connections between various
rigid sets. These constraints will then be effective after the insertion of the component into
a new document.

4 Define an articulation configuration

Assembly, Define component, Define articulation configuration
Name the articulation configuration as Ca1.
The construction tree opens and displays the SET OF ARTICULATION CONSTRAINTS.

Expand Ca1, and then Rigid sets (29).

By definition, a rigid element corresponds

to a part of the project. The idea here is to
group similar elements in order to create
rigid sub-sets.

Rigid Sets

76 Missler Software
TopSolid’Wood 2007

For this exercise, define three rigid sub-sets :

- The first referring to the fixed elements (Panels, hardware…)
- The other two referring to the variable components (one sliding door in each
rigid sub-set),

In the construction tree, right-click on Rigid set (1),

and then select Make Rigid.

Click on all the elements which will make up the first

rigid sub-set (fixed parts).

Select STOP.

The rigid subset containing all the fixed elements is

created.

Creation or three rigid sub-sets

The connections should now be defined in the rigid sets. The idea of this procedure is to
define the constraints between the sliding doors and the unit, which will allow the
adjustment of their positioning after the insertion of the component into a new document.

So that the configuration articulation is taken into account during the insertion of the
component, it is obligatory to set it up using constrained positioning.

In the automatic articulations list, you will find all the installation constraints for the
positioning of the sliding doors.

If the value of each column is identical for each of the two lines, they will be grouped.

Example :

For two doors with the same characteristics, there will be a 2 x Door entry in the bill of
material and not two lines.

If the material of one door is modified and the material property column is defined as a
sorting column, you will get the following result.

Missler Software 101

TopSolid’Wood 2007

In a more complete case (8 columns), the lines of the bill of material will be sorted and gathered
according to the first column.
If the value of this column is identical, the sorting is done using the second column and so on...

The sorting is never done according to the next column but is done according to the order
number (right-hand side column).
This order can be different from the default column order of the bill of material.

Examples on 10 parts shown opposite :

- 2 are swietenia

The rules for constructing the counter mould tool are identical to those for the moulding tool.

The tool template can be created :

- In a file containing a moulding tool. This method allows the use of the Wood,
Counter moulding function. The purpose of this function is to associate a counter
moulding operation, to an existing moulding operation.
- Or in a new file. The use of the counter moulding tool will be done using Wood,
Moulding function. There will be no association between the moulding and the
counter moulding.

The positioning rules are identical to those of a moulding tool.

Tool correction (Radius)

The tool correction (radius) corresponds to the

difference between the physical radius of the tool,
and the cut depth of the tool.

This information is very important because it is used

for all moulding operations created using the
Tangent mode.

It is also taken into account when the trajectory

offset option is used in the moulding operation.

Declaration of a tool
The declaration of a moulding or counter moulding tool, is done using the Define tool function,
available under the menu Wood \ Define.

All the moulding and counter moulding tools are defined using the same procedure:

1. Define the type of tool : MOULDING or COUNTER MOULDING

2. Select the profile of the tool
3. Assign a name and designation to the tool
4. Select the positioning coordinate system
5. Assign a name and designation to the coordinate system
6. Define the tool correction (radius)
7. Define the cut depth of the tool.

Each created tool is added to the SET_SHAPING_TOOLS assembly set.

There you will find all the previously defined information.

It is also possible to choose the elements which will

appear in the moulding dialogue window.

To do this, simply right-click on Elements to

display, and then select Insert.
Select the shapes, coordinate systems, dimensions,
etc. to insert.

If there is no elements to display selected, the

software will display the profile of the tool and its
positioning coordinate system.

In order to show the elements to display in the

moulding dialogue window, the elements must
be visible in the tool file. (Active layer turned
on).

Several Moulding Operations

To use a tool or a stacked tool for several operations, it is necessary to define several positioning
coordinate systems.

During the use of the moulding function, it is necessary to uncheck the option Make one
operation in the moulding dialogue window.

Once this option is unchecked, the user will have to define the adjustments for the first operation
(Positioning, mode, values …).

118 Missler Software

TopSolid’Wood 2007

After confirming the first operation, the NEXT OPERATION button allows the user to continue the
moulding of the part by carrying out further moulding operations using the same tool.
The machining characteristics must then be defined for the next operation.
It is possible to carry out as many moulding operations as needed.

The STOP button will end and confirm the moulding operation.

In the moulding function, the position coordinate system used aligns with the top level of
the selected reference face. It is important to draw the profile of the tool in relation to this
coordinate system because it defines the position of the moulding on the part it is applied
to.

Save the tools

It is obligatory to save all tool files in a standard component library.

TopSolid’Wood 2007

Implementation of a group configuration

The group configuration makes it possible for several users, via a network, to share the
component libraries as well as the various configuration files used by Topsolid.

Let us look at the example of the following configuration :

SERVER
C Drive (System)
D Drive (Shared)

Network drive S Network drive S

CAO1 CAO2
C and D Drives C and D Drives
Network drive S pointing Network drive S pointing
to the root of the D drive to the root of the D drive
on the SERVER on the SERVER

It is necessary to take care that all workstations access the server machine using the same
drive letter (in our example, both workstations access the server using the drive letter S).

1. The TOPGROUP variable :

Declaration :
The TOPGROUP variable allows the user to specify the folder where common files will be stored.
It is defined during the installation of TopSolid (see the image below) :

Missler Software 135

TopSolid’Wood 2007

During installation, a folder called "Template" is automatically created in the folder

specified by the TOPGROUP variable.

In our example, we would have S:\Missler\Group\Template.

The TOPGROUP variable can also be modified using "Add / Remove Programs" in the Windows
"Control panel”. In this case, the folder specified by the TOPGROUP variable is not created.

2. Sharing configuration files and templates :

Sharing templates :
In order to be accessible by all users, templates of TopSolid documents, TopDraft documents (title
blocks), bills of material templates (.BOM files) and index templates (.IXL files) must be stored in
the folder; TOPGROUP\Template.

In our example, they must be stored in S:\Missler\Group\Template.

Once stored, these templates are generally proposed in windows that have a "Group" tab.

In our example, when creating a bill of

material, the templates (.BOM files)
stored in S:\Missler\Group\Template
are displayed under the "Group" tab.

All templates of the same type (design, multi-draft, etc…) are proposed in the same window, and
are classified simply in three sections (USER, GROUP and STANDARD) depending on the place
they were stored :

136 Missler Software

TopSolid’Wood 2007

In our example, during the

creation of a new multi-draft
document, the templates
stored in;
S:\Missler\Group\Template,
are displayed under the line
"***GROUP TEMPLATES***".

A section is not displayed

unless templates exist in the
appropriate storage folder, in
our example the section
"***USER TEMPLATES***" is
not displayed as no template
is stored in the folder
C:\Missler\Config\Template.

Sharing configuration files :

In order to be accessible to all users, the definition files below must be placed in the folder defined
by the TOPGROUP variable :

- top.cod : TopSolid Usage codes (this file can also exist in the "Personal" folder of
each machine).
- top.prd : Properties definition file
- top.dri : Drilling templates definition file
- top.tap : Tappings definition file
- top.tol : Tolerances definition file
- top.mat : Material definition file
- top.tex : Textures definition file
- top.dgi : User general information definition file.

.MEN & .ICN Files : Text, menus and icons definition files.
As indicated in §1, definition files stored in the "Group" folder take priority over those stored in the
"Personal" folder. The behaviour of the configuration files for TopSolid (TOP.CFG) and TopDraft
(TOPZDFT.CFG), is slightly different :

When TopSolid is launched, the lines contained in the "Group" configuration files are copied to the
"Personal" configuration files. Additionally, if a line beginning with the same configuration word
exists in both the "Group" and "Personal" configuration files, the line in the "Personal"
configuration file will be overwritten by the corresponding line in the "Group" configuration file.

As configuration files contain information that is specific to the machine (in particular, display
parameters) it is recommended to place these display parameters configuration lines in the
"Personal" configuration files and to place the other configuration lines (declaration of libraries,
predefined values, etc…) in the "Group" configuration files, as these lines will be automatically
copied to the "Personal" configuration files when TopSolid is launched.

In this case, modification of the "Group" configuration files must be carried out manually (in
Notepad) as the function "Tools, Options" has no effect on the "Group" configuration files, it only
effects "Personal" configuration files.

Verification :
The Help, Configuration and Help, and Codes functions allow you to verify which folders the
configuration files are taken into account from and also allows you to verify the declaration of
variables such as TOPCONFIG, TOPGROUP, etc…

Missler Software 137

TopSolid’Wood 2007

3. Sharing libraries and catalogues :

Sharing libraries :
Initially, it is necessary to create a place on the server where library files will be stored (this
location is not managed by the TOPGROUP variable), then the library (standard) must be declared
in the "Group" configuration file (TOP.CFG) using the configuration word D_COMPO_STANDARD.

Example :
On the server, we created a folder “S:\Standards” and we would now like to create a library
(standard) called "COMMON LIBRARY", so we must therefore add the following line in the
"Group" configuration file :

D_COMPO_STANDARD "COMMON LIBRARY" "S:\Standards"

Sharing alternative and additional catalogues :

By default, alternative and additional catalogues are stored in the "Personal" folder
(\Missler\Config), but it is also possible to share them by indicating the place where they are stored
in the "Group" configuration file, using the configuration word D_COMPO_ALTERNAT.

Example :
D_COMPO_ALTERNAT S:\Missler\Group

Sharing standard curves (Curve / Other curves / Standard curves) :

As with the libraries, a place on the server must first be created where common standard curves
will be stored (this location is not managed by the TOPGROUP variable). Then the standard must
be declared in the "Group" configuration file (TOP.CFG) using the configuration word
D_CV_STANDARD_PROFILES.

Example : On the server we created a folder; S:\Profiles and we would now like to declare a
new standard called "STANDARD PROFILES".

D_CV_STANDARD_PROFILES "PROFILS STANDARD" "S:\Profiles"

Memo : Duplicate – Repeat

Missler Software 139

TopSolid’Wood 2007

There are two ways to “copy” parts in TopSolid : DUPLICATE or REPEAT.

Duplicate
This function is used to obtain one or more additional copies that are identical and linked to the
original.

This function does not allow the number of copies to be controlled by a parameter.

When a duplicate is made, a link is created, which links the template to each of the copied parts
created from it. There is only a single direction : from the template to the copy.

Template

Element
duplicated with
3 copies

Subsequent operations

Template

When using this option, any operation that is carried

out on the Template element will be automatically
created on the duplicated elements.

Example: If a chamfer is created on the template, it

will automatically be created on the different copies
(the link updates them).

Template

Modified part.
However, if there is an operation carried out on one
of the duplicated parts, there is no update of the
other parts.

Modifying a duplicated part does not cut

its link with the template part in any way.

It is however possible to break this link.

Select the Modify icon, and then click on the part.
duplicate part whose link is to be cut.
Use the option FOLLOW EXISTING OPERATIONS.

If an operation is carried out on the template part,

the update is only carried out on the active links.

Existing operations

This option allows an operation to be carried out on the template without affecting the duplicated
items.
Template

Example: If a chamfer is created on the template, it

will not be created on the copies (the link is
deactivated)

Once a link is cut and the template part is

modified, the mode can no longer be redefined.

Representation in the bill of material

All the parts created from duplication, can have the same geometry, and can be defined
independently. Each part will have its own defined information (designation, material, cutting
up…).

Missler Software 141

TopSolid’Wood 2007

Repeat

The principle is the same. The part to be repeated is chosen, a transformation is selected, and
then the distance and number is entered. The main difference concerns the link between the
template and the copies. Any modification of the template causes the copies to be updated.

During a repetition, the first copy always superimposes the template (is placed over it).
By default, the template is made invisible but it is possible to make it visible.
If this principal is not understood or badly managed, it could cause problems.

1 – Template invisible

Repetition

Unlike duplication, the number of parts to be repeated can be controlled by a parameter.

According to the quantity and the copy method chosen, the result varies as shown below.

During a repetition, it is possible to choose between two distribution modes :

Total distance

The driven value corresponds to the distance “l”

between the template and the last copy (the number
is spread over the distance).

142 Missler Software

TopSolid’Wood 2007

Distance per copy

The driven value corresponds to the step

between two copies (a step and number is
entered).

To edit the template, there are two possibilities available : the use of the construction tree or
the modify element function (wrench).

Use of the construction tree

Open the construction tree, and then Edit the repetition.

The operation principal is simple :

- if the SPECIMENS (copies) are in bold type, the template will be invisible on the
screen,
- if the TEMPLATE is in bold type, conversely, the specimens will be invisible on
the screen.

To make the template visible or invisible; right-

click on the line displaying the identity of the
repetition, as shown opposite.

In the list, click on Template = INVISIBLE to

display the template and conversely, click again
to make it invisible again.

It is imperative to be in the Invisible=Hidden

visibility mode.
This mode will enable you to not
confuse the template and the
specimens (copies) of the repetition.

Memo : Links and dependencies

Missler Software 147

TopSolid’Wood 2007

File links and dependencies

During the creation of the furniture project, a file dependency was created. This was created
because of the insertion of various files to form another file (the assembly file).

These created links are extremely important for the management and operation of the file,
because with each opening, saving… of this file, they are used.

To simply :
- RENAME a file
- REMOVE a file
- MODIFY ITS LOCATION ON THE DISC, will cause damage to the structure of the
project.

In the case that one of the linked files is untraceable; the software will prompt the user to locate it
manually, in order to create a new link. If you voluntarily ignore this message, the link will not be
changed and the integrity of the assembly file will be compromised leading to the following :
- error messages,
- loss of information,
- invalid construction elements,
- missing auxiliary parameters
- unsolved positioning constraints …

If after opening a file containing untraceable links, and then saving the file, the missing links will
not be considered when the file is next opened. The file will be saved in the state it is currently
opened (i.e. without the missing linked files).

File not found

When a linked file is untraceable,

the “Load moved document”
dialogue window opens, and it
indicates the name of the file that
could not be located.

Using the “Advanced” button, you have

the possibility of choosing the search
mode for the untraceable documents
using the dialogue window shown
opposite :

TopSolid’Wood 2007

Using the “Advanced” button, you have the possibility of choosing the search mode for the
untraceable documents using the dialogue window shown above :

Load referenced files one by one : It is necessary to manually indicate the position of each file.
There is no automatic search in the same directories.

Search files in specified directories : The manually indicated directories are memorized and an
automatic search is carried out in this directory.

Search files under a specified directory : It is necessary to indicate a root directory and a search
is carried out in all the sub-directories. If two files having the same name are found, a dialogue
window appears prompting the user to choose the appropriate file.

Abort file loading : Complete interruption of the loading, no file is loaded.
