THE COMPENDIUM OF KNOWLEDGE AND WISDOM

IBN RAJAB AL-HAMBALI
TRANSLATED BY
Abduassamad Clarke
Helping others is not only is a duty on Muslims, it is the most beloved act of worship in Islam. Allah
rewards ease with ease, and deliverance with deliverance, if we are helping others for the noble
purpose of pleasing Allah. Al-Hasan al-Basri sent some people of his company to look after the
needs of a man, and he said to them, “Go to Thabit al-Bunani and take him with you,” They went to
Thabit and he said, “I am in itikaf retreat,” So they went to al-Hasan and told him, and he said,
“Say to him...do you not know that your walking for the sake of your brother Muslism’s need is
better for you than Hajj after Hajj?” They returned to Thabit and he abandoned his itikaf and went
with them. The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬was brought food on one of his journeys and so all companions ate
from it. One man withheld his hand, and the Messenger of Allah ‫ ﷺ‬said to him, “What is wrong
with you?” He answered, “I am fasting.” He asked, “What made you do that?” He said, “My two
sons are with me and they saddle [my mount] for me and serve me”. So he said,”Then they
continue to have more merit than you.” Abu Dawud reported that some of the Companions of the
Messenger of Allah ‫ ﷺ‬arrived praising one of their people highly. They said, “We have never
seen the like of so-and-so. Whenever we travelled he was reciting, and whenever we alighted he
performed salah.” He asked, “So who looked after his property…” until he mentioned, “...and who
gave fodder to his camel or riding beast?” They answered, “We did.” He said, “Then all of you are
better than him.”

1. HELP PEOPLE AND ALLAH WILL HELP YOU

When we help others, Allah helps us in accomplishing our own goals. The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said, ‘...
Allah is ready to help the slave as long as the slave is ready to help his brother…’ Muslim

2. HELP THE UNDESERVING

Allah is Ar-Rehman and He distributes His Rahmah to deserving and undeserving alike. As His
true servants, we must practice rahmah with others. “Doing good for a good done to you is simply
repayment, whereas doing good for an evil done to you is a tremendous virtue.” Umar ibn Al-Khattab

3. CONCEAL VULNERABILITIES
When we are working closely with people, we come across their weaknesses and vulnerabilities.
To maintain love and excellent relationships we must protect their honor and conceal their
shortcomings. The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said, ‘Whoever conceals the vulnerability of his brother Muslim,
then Allah will conceal his vulnerability on the Day of Rising. Whoever exposes the vulnerability of
his brother Muslim, then Allah will expose his vulnerability to the extent that He will bring disgrace
upon him in his own house’ I bn Majah. Not only will we gain the pleasure of Allah but we will also get
rewarded as Allah will hide many of our own shortcomings and we save ourselves from the
punishment of Allah.

Allah says in Quran, ‘People who love to see filth being spread about concerning those who have
Iman will have a painful punishment both in this dunya and the akhirah’ (Surah an-Nur :19)

4. BE OPEN MINDED
We should receive criticism constructively, Umar ibn Al-Khattab said. “The most beloved of people
to me is he that points out my flaws to me’ and he also said, “Whosoever shows you your faults is
your friend. Those that pay you lip service in praise are your executioners.”

A. Communicate with respect without causing offence

The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said that a believer is like a mirror to another believer, this means that
just as we stand in front of a mirror to beautify ourselves and mirror helps us see our
imperfections without offending us, likewise we must act as a mirror for others and help
beautify them without offending them. Mirror does not share our imperfections with others
likewise we should hide all imperfections of others.

B. Build Trust
“Sometimes the people with the worst past create the best future.” Umar ibn Al-Khattab
C. Make Friends
“To be alone you avoid bad company. But to have a true friend is better than being alone.”
Umar ibn Al-Khattab

D. Share your Knowledge

Knowledge increases when you share it with others. “Acquire knowledge and teach it to
people.” Umar ibn Al-Khattab

5. MEET AND LOVE OTHERS FOR THE PLEASURE OF ALLAH

A person visited his brother (Muslim) in another town and Allah deputed an angel to wait for him on
his way. When he came to him he asked him, ‘Where do you intend to go?’ He said, ‘I intend to go
to my brother in this town.’ H e asked, ‘Have you any right over him (for the recompense of which
you go there)?’ H e said, ‘No, (the purpose of the visit is) nothing but I love him for the sake of
Allah, the Glorious, the Majestic.’ The angel then disclosed to him, ‘I am a Messenger to you from
Allah (to inform you) that Allah loves you as you love him (for His sake).’” [Sahih Muslim]

People of knowledge say that If anyone is unselfish and sincere in his love for the creation then he
becomes the beloved of his Lord. Such people will find themselves on pulpits of light on the Day of
Resurrection. The Prophets (alaihimus salam) and the Shuhada (martyrs) will envy them for the
exceptional reception accorded to them and for their nearness to Allah.

The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said that, “The parable of the believers in their affection, mercy, and compassion
for each other is that of a body. When any limb aches, the whole body reacts with sleeplessness
and fever.” [Bukhari]
