Assignment 5

This document contains 5 assignments related to hydrology concepts: 1. Compute evaporation for a reservoir using Penman's theory and determine annual loss from the reservoir. 2. Estimate actual evapotranspiration for a wheat field on different days using reference evapotranspiration and soil moisture parameters. 3. Derive and use the Green-Ampt equation to evaluate infiltration rate and depth for a silty clay soil over time. 4. Determine cumulative infiltration over time using Horton's equation for different initial and decay parameters. 5. Calculate infiltration indices like total rainfall, net runoff, and W-index for given storm rainfall data using initial loss and phi-index values.

Assignment 5

1. A large reservoir is located in latitude 40° 30' N. Compute monthly and annual lake evaporation for
the reservoir from the given data using the nomogram of Penman's theory. If the Class A pan
evaporation at the reservoir for the year is 1143 mm, compute the pan coefficient. Assuming that the
precipitation on the lake is as given and that the runoff represents unavoidable spillage of this
precipitation during floods, what is the net annual anticipated loss from the reservoir per square
kilometre of surface in cubic metres per day? What would the change in evaporation be for the month
of July if the reservoir was at 40o S?

2. A wheat field has maximum available moisture of 12 cm. If the reference evapotranspiration is 6.0
mm/day, estimate the actual evapotranspiration on Day 2, Day 7 and Day 9 after irrigation. Assume
soil-water depletion factor p = 0.20 and crop factor K = 0.65.
3. (a) State and Derive Green-Ampt equation for infiltration capacity. (Refer Chapter-4 V.T Chow Book)
(b) Use the Green-Ampt method to evaluate the infiltration rate and cumulative infiltration depth for
a silty clay soil at 0.1-hour increments up to 6 hours from the beginning of infiltration. Assume
initial effective saturation 20 percent and continuous ponding. Also compute the cumulative
infiltration after one hour for initial effective saturations of 0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 percent.
Draw a graph of cumulative infiltration vs. initial effective saturation.
4. For Horton's equation suppose f0 = 5 cm/h, f =1 cm/h, and k = 2 h-1. Determine the cumulative
infiltration after 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 h. Plot the infiltration rate and cumulative infiltration as
functions of time. Plot the infiltration rate as a function of the cumulative infiltration. Assume
continuously ponded conditions.
5. Define infiltration indices and their calculation procedure.
a) In a 140-min storm the following rates of rainfall were observed in successive 20-min intervals:
6.0, 6.0, 18.0, 13.0, 2.0, 2.0 and 12.0 mm/h. Assuming the φ-index value as 3.0 mm/h and an
initial loss of 0.8 mm, determine the total rainfall, net runoff and W-index for the storm.
b) The mass curve of rainfall of duration 100 min is given below. If the catchment had an initial loss
of 0.6 cm and a φ-index of 0.6 cm/h, calculate the total surface runoff from the catchment.
