Code: GMC465 Type: C
Title: Fluid Mechanics II Title (French):
Number of credits: 2 Number of contact hours per week: 2
Prerequisites: GMC430 Corequisites:
Description (English):This course has two parts. The first is devoted to the study of compressibility effects in gas flows: the
speed of sound, adiabatic and isentropic steady flow, isentropic flow with area changes, normalshock wave, the operation of
converging and diverging nozzles, twodimensional supersonic flow, and PrandtlMeyer expansion waves. The second part
concerns the effects of viscosity, concept of boundary layer, effects of pressure gradient on the boundary layer, and finally the
turbulence and its modeling.

Learning Outcomes (English)
LO#1 Develop the ability to model and analyze compressible fluid flow systems utilizing natural laws and methods of analysis
which include vector field theory and partial differential equations, including application to practical problems such as
supersonic external flows and isentropic and nonisentropic internal flows.
LO#2 Gain ability to analyze and solve problems pertaining to the aerodynamics of aircraft. This includes using analytical
approximations such as thin airfoil theory and lifting line analysis as well as basic panel methods for determining aerodynamic
loads
LO#3 Become proficient in the application of fundamental thermodynamics and fluid mechanics to the analysis of propulsion
systems and their components
LO#4 Understand the origins of separation, vortex formation, turbulence and their role in evaluation of the drag and lift forces
